The ZeroBlock bitcoin app from Zeroblock LLC (now owned by Blockchain.info) is a great way to track the latest price quotes across multiple exchanges and keep up with news as well on all of your devices. Whether you are at home, in the office or on the go, you can follow the bitcoin conversation just about anywhere you have Internet access. ZeroBlock was created by Dan Held and Kevin Johnson and released during the summer of 2013. It has become the highest rated and most reviewed bitcoin app on the iTunes store according a recent press release from the company.

The web version includes three columns: News, Forums and Twitter.

The app version includes four major sections: charts, Real-Time exchange data, news feed, and news sources. The app version does not include the Zeroblock Twitter feed.

Exchange quotes - Get Real-Time price quotes the top 5 bitcoin exchanges

The ZeroBlock app includes Real-Time price quotes from the largest bitcoin exchanges:

Real-Time price quotes inclue the current price, High, Low, and percent change (+/-) for the previous 24-hour period. Other data includes: Block Time, Hash Rate, Next Difficulty, Market Cap, Volume BTC, Total BTC, and M1 Rank.

You can togggle between exchanges by clicking on the exchange name next to the label “Exchange.” You can get bitcoin prices in the different currencies quoted from each exchange by clicking on the currency name next to the “Currency” label. You can toggle between USD and EUR when viewing price quotes from the Bitstamp exchange for example.

In the mobile app version you can toggle between exchanges by clicking on the exchange name at the top of the exchange screen. Switch currencies by clicking on the currency quote.

If you swipe down in the mobile app version you can access a handy BTC/USD and USD/BTC conversion calculator.

If you swipe up in the mobile app you can set upper and lower thresholds aroun the current bitcoin price on the specific exchange that you are viewing. When the upper or lower threshold is met, you can opt to receive push notifications.

News and Forums feed - Follow the news from some of the best sources online

You can follow the news in an aggregated news feed which is also customizable. See the “Select news and forum sources” below to select with sources to view.

If you click on a news item in the web app, it will open up in a new tab. When you tap on a news item in the mobile version, a small window will slide open to reveal the article. If you click on the “i” icon, you can get more options. You can choose to open the news item in Safari, send the news item's link as a tweet from your Twitter account, post the link to your Facebook profile, or send the link as an email.

Charts

Charts are provided by Clark Moody. You can view four time periods: Year, Week, Month, and Day. And four chart styles: Candle, Line and Show EMAs. You can upgrade from grayscale to color by making a $1.99 in-app purchase of Color Charts.

Tilt your mobile device from portrait to landscape mode to change the layout of your chart.

Select news and forum sources

In the web version, click on the downward pointing arrow to the right of the “News” column to reveal a list of clickable news sources. By default all news sources are selected. Click on the ones your wish to hide from your news stream. The same functionality applies to the “Forums” column. The sources for the “Forums” column are essentially selected sections of Bitcointalk.org and Reddit.com/

In the mobile app version swipe left from the news feed screen to reveal a list of selectable news sources. The active news sources are white, the inactive sources are greyed out. Click on news sources to activate/de-activate them. The news feed combines the “Forum” column from the web version of ZeroBlock.

The same news and forum sources are available in the mobile app as the web version. You can also choose to include or exclude “Promoted” items. These are typically ads that reside at the top of your news feed screen.

Conclusion

This is my “go-to” app for bitcoin prices and news. I check it throughout the day. The news is pretty well filtered and even includes some seletions on altcurrencies too. The amazing thing is that it is not only free to use, but also without ads for the time being.
