The Magic of Believing

Are your mental attitudes a help to you, or a hindrance? We are all very keen to see that others have the right attitude towards us. But what of our own attitudes?

Years ago I read a statement by the great psychiatrist Karl Menninger which fascinated me. And this is what it says: 'Attitudes are more important than facts'. There are facts, all right, but I never saw a set of facts to which there wasn't a solution. Some facts can be changed. And where there is one that can't be changed, maybe I can get around it or under it or over it. Or, maybe I can weave that fact into a new pattern and live with it and use it to my advantage. So a man's attitude towards facts brings the magic of believing into play and he can defeat the facts rather than the facts defeating him. 'If thou can’t believe. . .' If you can only believe, then nothing shall be impossible to you.

Many books have been written to remind us that to achieve success we should have a positive mental attitude, and that we shouldn't let outside negative influences affect our efficiency.

You can't have a vague and generalized positive mental attitude. By definition, a mental attitude is “A STATE OF MIND REGARDING SOME MATTER, AS INDICATING OPINION OR PURPOSE”. It must be directed towards something specific. There are five specific things towards which any individual must have the right mental attitude before he is properly equipped to achieve success.

PRODUCT OR SERVICE

Whether we are selling a product, a service, our own ability, an idea, or anything else, we will sell most effectively when we sincerely believe that what we are selling is good value. This sincere belief engenders enthusiasm, and with this powerful combination working for you, your convincing manner multiplies your selling power.

EMPLOYER

Experts from all fields agree that any worthwhile person is proud of, and loyal to, the company or cause he represents. Yes, it is important to have PRIDE, LOYALTY, AND FAITH IN THE MANAGEMENT. Loyalty is more than just a matter of ethics. It has a big influence on our success and our progress with a company. Loyalty does four important things for you:

• A feeling of enthusiastic loyalty adds to your “work power.” Your loyalty highlights your conviction.

• Loyalty enhances your relationship with your boss, who feels confident in your unwavering support.

• Your family feels secure that you will remain in your job.

• Loyalty gives you a feeling of security and faith in the future, and saves you from the guilt feelings that come from taking from an employer you are not fully supporting.

YOURSELF

In order to have the right attitude towards yourself you must have CONFIDENCE IN YOUR OWN ABILITY, BELIEF IN YOUR OWN INTEGRITY, AND FAITH IN YOUR ULTIMATE SUCCESS. YOU MUST KNOW THAT WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS WORTHWHILE, AND THAT YOU ARE DOING IT TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY.

If you have that warm glow of virtue that comes with the knowledge that you are doing your utmost, you are building your confidence, and enhancing your self-esteem, you feel that you deserve to succeed, you expect to succeed, and you do succeed.

Many people don't even try to achieve the things they could achieve because they just don't believe they can do it. Others, often with far less real ability, advance through life by leaps and bounds, because their belief in themselves enables them to make the best possible use of every asset they have.

In most cases, whether we reach the top in any field, or never rise above mediocrity, might be said to depend on how hard we work. But it isn't just the hard work and the physical results it achieves that lead to success - it is how it makes you feel about yourself that counts most of all.

OTHER PEOPLE

To check your own attitude towards others, try answering these questions:

• Do you LIKE PEOPLE?

• Do you ENJOY MEETING PEOPLE?

• Do you get a kick out of HELPING PEOPLE?

• Are you INTENSELY INTERESTED IN UNDERSTANDING PEOPLE?

• Do you BELIEVE THAT MOST PEOPLE HAVE AT LEAST SOME GOOD IN THEM?

If you answered “yes” to every one of those questions, you have the right attitude towards other people. If you had answered “no” to even one of them, there would be an urgent need for improvement if you were to realize your full potential. No amount of skill will make up for a lack in such a basic essential.

FUTURE

How should you feel about the future? How do you feel about the future now? Do you plan ahead, or wait to see what happens? Do you look forward to the future, or do you prefer to remember the past? What kind of a future do you think you have? The most effective way to regard the future can be summed up in just two powerful words - OPTIMISTIC DETERMINATION.

You set yourself a goal which you know you can achieve if you try hard enough. It's no use daydreaming about what you would do if you won a large sum of money. This is not optimism, but fantasy. Optimism must be based on fact, not on supposition.

We do this by selling to ourselves the desirability of achieving this goal. The more we convince ourselves that we want to achieve the goal, the more we generate the determination that will make us do the difficult and often unpleasant things which must be done to achieve it.

Always sell yourself new goals as the old ones are achieved, and you will never face the problem of Alexander the Great - “No new worlds to conquer”.
