DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

Rift Souls vs Roles and Builds

When it comes to character classifications in Rift, there is a lot of confusion among some newer players as to what souls, roles and builds are. Through this article I hope to be able to help clear the air and let players better understand what these terms are used for and how you should be classifying yourself in groups.

To help illustrate this, let us look at each of these terms separately.

Souls

Souls are the individual skill sets that each character can use. For each player, there are a total of anywhere from 8 (base) to 10 (with expanded soul packages from the Rift store) souls. A couple of them for the Rogue, for example, include Tactician (Storm Legion package) and Marksman (base). There are what all skills (active and passive) come from as you level up and allocate points.

Roles

Roles are usually classified as what you do, in most games. For example, tank, DPS, healer and support. Within Rift, this goes a bit deeper, due to the soul system. For example, as a Cleric there are multiple ways to set yourself up as a healer. As a Rogue there are many ways to go as a DPS. So instead of just using the normal definition of roles, Rift's terminology means the actual setup of the character.

If you are already familiar with how the soul system works, this part is much easier to understand. A role is basically just a set of three souls (with their points allocated however you wish). As an example, in the below image, my role would be considered as 41Tact/26MM/9Sab. In other words, the souls chosen were Tactician, Marksman and Saboteur, and their points were allocated in such a way that there are 41 in Tactician, 26 in Marksman and 9 in Saboteur. www.rift.rpgparadise.com_images_guides_general_rift_soul_build_role_explanation.jpg

Roles can also be defined by their “official” meaning. For example, there is the Nightstalker and Huntsman. While these do not explicitly state what souls they include or the allocation of points, they are known builds that, by using these words, automatically tell people the allocations (at least those that are familiar with them). The Huntsman, for example, is a 61Rang/12Assassin/3NB build.

Builds

Builds are sometimes interchangeably used with roles, although that is really improper. Really, builds are the specific point allocations of the roles. To understand why this is important, consider the information that my role gives you: there are 41 points in Tactician, 26 in Marksman and 9 in Saboteur, but where are they? How do you replicate the exact build without seeing it or having more information? The answer to this is simple: you either don't, or you keep guessing until you possibly get it right (but how would you know?). The build solves this information by giving the exact information that's needed. For example, to start off mine would be something like (in a text form): (Marksman): (5) Ionization, (5) Metal Plating, (5) Strategic Advantage. This build would continue on to give every option there are points in, as well as how many points to put in there. Some things, for example, may just have 1/3 points. In this case, knowing that information goes a long way towards replicating the build.

Tying it Together

To give it a somewhat tl;dr version, the terms soul, role and build in Rift mean the following:

  • Soul – this is where you allocate points to give skills (both active and passive) for playing
  • Role – this is a collection of three souls and the number of points allocated in each
  • Build – this is the specific setup of the role, detailing how to replicate it exactly
