Rift Ranked Warfronts – My Take

Rift has recently added a new type of PvP, called ranked warfronts. These are a bit different from any of the others, in that they go with the kill based score system. Rather than having different objectives to complete (like capturing flags or holding points), the only goal is to kill as many enemy players as possible.

This is an interesting idea, and it plays on the fact that most people appear to think that the only thing that matters in the other warfronts is kills as well. Now, for once, there is something that actually rewards that kind of mentality. While we could argue that this gives the wrong message when it comes to the other warfronts, we were past that even when the game was still in the beta stages; people just do not understand that there are more to the warfronts than just farming kills.

I do want to bring up a pretty big argument against this change, though, which is that the matches are based on the team that gets to 25 kills first, and they are 5 vs 5 matches. The less people there are on a team, the worse the balance becomes (with more people on each team, there is a lot more balance that is going on between the classes). On top of this, 25 kills can take forever if the two groups are at least somewhat competitive to one another; a single battle (with a wipe) can take a while, and this is banking on many of these happening. Even games like Star Trek Online only require a fraction of that in kill counts, and its matches can go on for extended periods of time as well.

In any case, it is an awesome thing to see that Trion is working towards giving players what they appear to want. While it does kind of go against the ideas they have had in the past (with regards to giving more than just a reason to kill other players), it is still great that they are seeing the patterns in how people are already playing and that they are going out of their way to enhance that experience. Now they just need to take it a step further (if this experiment ends up working) and allow alternate versions of the larger maps (such as Scion, with 20 vs 20) where kills are the sole purpose and people are ranked. While some people may not like this idea, I see nothing wrong with it; people are always still going to be able to play whichever ones they want! At the end of the day, choices are awesome and I see no reason not to keep offering more of them. Especially now that we already have this new game type in the game and it can (or should be able to) be transferred to the others easily.
