DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

The economy in Rift has one vital flaw: it's too easy for players to craft their own gear. While this may seem more like a positive aspect, it kills any requirement of relying on other players for items. As a result, the economy and market are suffering.

To keep a game economy stable, two things are needed: supply and demand. In the sense of Rift, this means that crafted items need to be demanded from other players. But as it is, it's so easy to craft items that this just isn't seen that often. While it is true that the purple crafted items are harder to make, the number of players able to craft them significantly outnumber those who need them. As a result, their value is always declining.

To counter this, new materials were added to the game in the past, where the recipes cost 20 platinum and they have a 20-hour cooldown on crafts. While this did help to a point (considering most items require multiple of the materials), it only took a couple of weeks before the demand started dropping off. At this point the materials, and subsequently the full crafted items, are worth a fraction of what they were prior.

Some items, such as Weapon stones, Power surge and Mana surge Vials, are consumables that are used often. These have a somewhat strong market but it depends on the server population. Generally the players who use these items are raiders, as there really isn't much use outside of that (though the vials are sometimes seen in PvP as well). It's important to also note that these items have very different prices. As for their marketability, it is pretty high. It could be argued that they are the only crafted items worth making.

On the topic of runes, some have value but most do not. Though these can be a pretty large profit, for the most part just leveling up Rune crafter diminishes any true value in choosing it. This is mostly because a majority of the runes created while leveling it just don't have any value and players rarely go for them.

I really don't see any way to fix this problem, either, other than making Bind-on-Equip gear (drops) rare but better than crafted gear. But as it is now, with crafted gear and Bind-on-Pickup being the top, it's an issue that isn't going to go away until a change is made.

On the same token, many players enjoy this method of crafting because they don't have to rely on others to get the items they need. To some, crafting is a fun event that helps drive their game play and make it more enjoyable. Often times these players do it for the money, but some just enjoy the activity for what it is. But there is no disputing the fact that this has hurt the market and a major change in the way drops are handled will be needed to help repair it.
