Rift Game and Oculus Rift - Initial Thoughts

Trion has consistently worked towards making Rift a more enjoyable game, and an awesome feature that they have added (at least in a test version) is support for the Oculus Rift. The community, however, appears to be showing hostility towards this decision.

What is the Oculus Rift?

The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset that is able to be purchased by common people for things like gaming. Many new games are starting to work on support for it, as it brings about a whole different feel to playing them. It has a stereotypic 3D view, a wide field of view, and best of all it is being designed to be affordable.

Rift Brings in Oculus Rift

It's kind of fitting that the game Rift would support a new device with the same name. This support was added in Rift 2.8 Hotfix #5 and then further enhanced in Rift 2.8 Hotfix #6 earlier this week, though it is still in an experimental stage and has been stated as something that might not be permanent, depending on the issues that are encountered and their resolvability. With that said, even working towards making it compatible is a huge step forward, so it's more than possible that it will stay.

The Community Backlash

There has been a lot of community backlash against Trion; both in the game and on the forums. One thread was started right after the support was added, with people putting down Trion for “wasting time” on a system that isn't necessarily needed, while delaying future content in the process.

The important thing to note, however, is that the Oculus Rift support has been done as a side project. It has in no way affected further development of the Rift game. So from the player's perspective, there should be no complaints. Use it (if you have one of the devices already) or don't. Either way nothing has been lost from our perspective.

One side that I can join people on, however, is that the support should have been added and tested in the PTS prior to going to live. While there may never be issues from going straight to the live game, it's always possible. And despite being a side project, it is still possible that code changes can affect other areas in the game (however small that chance may be).

Concluding Thoughts

I personally think it's awesome that someone is willing to take their own personal time to try and make Rift a better game, enhancing it in different ways. It's hard to tell what the game will play like with an Oculus Rift (as I don't personally have one), but I do think that even offering the ability to use one – regardless as to whether or not players have them yet – is a huge step in the right direction. Time will tell what is going to happen as a result of this, but I'm extremely hopeful for what the future will hold with this new technology!
