Race To Mystery - Chapter 4

Brett woke up at 4.30 on Friday morning. He didn't get much sleep, he was nervous and excited about the day ahead. He packed his gear, double checked it again, and then went downstairs to the restaurant where Chris was already waiting.

“How did you sleep?” he asked.

“Not great actually. I will try and get some sleep on the plane”

“Yeah same here. There are no buses this time of the morning. We will need to catch a taxi to the airport”

“Yeah all good mate. Should only cost around fifteen bucks, it's not far”

At a quarter past five, their taxi arrived and they headed to the airport. It was still cold and had been raining most of the night. They checked in for their flight and were waiting at the gate when they saw the familiar figure of Dean arrive, camera in hand.

“Hey boys. Just need to do a quick recording here, you guys are the only ones who are doing it this way, will make for good television”.

After doing a bit of filming, it was time to board the plane. It took off on time, which left the boys relieved. They touched down at Gold Coast airport just after 7 am where it was much warmer than Sydney and headed straight for international departures. They were advised that their plane was running about half an hour late, so they waited at the terminal. Dean joined them soon after.

“Good news boys” he said.

“What's that?”

“I just got off the phone with one of the other cameramen. All international flights out of Sydney are delayed by at least 2 hours due to a power failure at the airport. You boys will be the early leaders by the looks. But this is strictly off the record”

Chris looked at Brett “Mate, you did it”

“It's a long race still. The next flight could even us up again” said Brett.

“True. Or it may work out that you get even further in front too. It's a handy break, no matter what” said Dean.

They boarded their plane and it took off just after 9.30 am. The flight was around eight hours, so they would be landing at approximately four pm in the afternoon Singapore time. The flight was smooth and all three of them soon fell asleep. Brett slept all the way through until he heard the captain announce they were making their approach to Changi Airport.

“Mate, here we are. First leg leaders. I will be a household name” said Chris jokingly.

“Yep. Usually in my household it's 'Bloody Chris' or 'what has that Chris done this time'.”

“Good on you mate. You love it”

They got off the plane and were soon inside the spacious airport. The collected their bags and entered the line to get their passports stamped. After what seemed to be an eternity, they were in the outer section of the terminal. Dean said “Ok guys, five to four local time. Clock is ticking from now”

“Ok mate” said Brett. We need to withdraw some cash and convert it into Singapore dollars for the train and what not. How much do you reckon we will spend here? We don't want to convert too much and then convert it back again, we will lose on commissions”

“Yeah you are right. Maybe if we withdraw say $1000US, that way we can convert it as we go”

“Sounds good. Let's do that, and convert maybe a hundred of it into local”

Chris set off to find an teller machine and soon returned with the cash. “Ok mate, let's split the cash down the middle, just to be safe”. He took half of the money and gave it to Brett. “Train station is this way. We go on the Tanah Merah line, it will take us near our hotel. We need to buy a card for the train which is five dollars, plus the ticket. You get your five dollars back when you return the card”

They bought their tickets and waited for the train. The air was humid, unbelievably humid and you could almost eat it with a knife and fork. The train arrived and they boarded.

“Shit, how hot is it? I couldn't breathe out there” said Chris.

“Tell me about it” Brett replied. “We need to get used to it. Kuala Lumpur will be pretty much the same. Keep an eye on the stations, we need to get off at Paya Labar”

They got off at their station and both of the boys immediately began to sweat. There was a haze in the air, and the sun was starting to go down. Whilst it got a little humid in the summertime back at home on the Gold Coast, this was just something else. There were large residential buildings, much like apartments in close proximity to the railway line. Being peak hour, there were people everywhere and they had to jostle through the crowds. They started to walk to the hotel and Dean was periodically filming them and asking questions. The city was alive, sounds of cars, smells of delicious food and the heavy feeling in the air. Things were definitely not going to be like they were at home. It was nearly six pm when they finally checked in. The girl at the counter was friendly and knew how to speak fluent English.

“I'm going to have shower then we will try and book the next flight” said Brett.

“No worries. You can go first if you like. Hang on, when you booked, wasn't it two single beds? This here is a double” replied Chris patting on the bed.

“Yeah I did actually. Or maybe I just needed someone to hold” said Brett, with a wink.

“Haha, I told you you couldn't afford me. You just want to brag that you slept in the same bed as a celebrity”

“I would be better looking than half of those girls you drag back home”

“Turn it up mate. Maybe a quarter of them” said Chris, laughing. “I will go down and see if I can get it sorted out. I will see if they have wifi also”

The shower was ordinary at best, and the water just trickled out. Brett had to check on more than one occasion if he had turned the correct tap on. It said cold, but the water was coming out warm. 'Everything is hot here' he thought. When he go out Chris had his laptop out, and the beds had been separated and remade. “They fixed it, damn”

“Better luck next time mate”

“The trip is still young”

“Ok, I got the wifi code, the internet is a bit slow but I can manage. Ok, Kuala Lumpur, any time after 3.55pm. Let's see” said Chris.

Brett sat next to him. “Air Asia, 39 Singapore dollars each, plus about 10 in taxes. That seems ok. But that's not until 10.45pm. Is there anything earlier?”

“Tiger Airways at 6.15 pm, but that's 79 each plus taxes. Silk Air at 7.30 pm, 89 plus taxes. Hmmm”

“I imagine most of the other teams will be on one or more of those flights. Have a look at the map, it's not that far to Kuala Lumpur. I wonder how long the bus would take?”

“At least 5 hours I reckon, I had a look back home” replied Brett. “Assume we catch the earliest flight, let's work out when the flight to Bangkok would be 24 hours after that. If we can get the timing right, it will be worth catching that one”

They took a good two hours to find a suitable flight that would potentially match up with their next leg. They decided on the earlier flight, the later one was cutting it too fine and it might cost them too much time. They were both tired, but hungry also. “Shall we go out and find something to eat? There were those food stalls just out the front of the hotel” asked Brett.

“Yeah mate, I'm starving, I would eat the back side out of a low flying bat”

Brett shook his head. They knocked on Dean's door and he soon joined them, camera in hand and they went downstairs and found what they were looking for. It was just as busy outside, if not busier. “Bloody hell mate. Back home they roll up the pavement at six pm”

“It's a mad house that's for sure” They were lining up to get some food from the stall when they saw two familiar figures walk past, suitcases in tow. “Hey” said Chris “Isn't that the two sisters from Adelaide?”

Brett called out to them “Hey girls, hows it going”

The two girls turned around and walked up to them. They looked completely exhausted, as did their camera man “Did you guys just get here?” asked Chris.

“Sort of. We couldn't find the right carousel at the airport. Then we accidentally got off the train two stops too early. We have been walking for about an hour”

“Shit that's no good”

“How long have you guys been here? Most of the other teams were on our flight, I can't remember seeing you”

“We only just got here too” lied Brett.

“Ohh ok. Well we have to run. It's still a fair walk to our hotel I think. I hope we are going the right way. Might see you at the airport tomorrow”

Brett and Chris each bought some satay chicken with rice, which was delicious and filling. They stopped at a convenience store and bought some bottled water.

“That wasn't too bad, cheap too, all of that cost under 15 dollars”

“Not wrong. That was the best satay I have ever had” remarked Chris. “Well, I don't know about you, but I'm off to bed. I reckon I could sleep another three days I'm so tired”

“Yeah good idea” said Brett and turned to Dean. “We will probably head out at about eight tomorrow morning mate”

“No worries, I will meet you down here” said Dean and they said their good nights. Brett fell asleep almost as soon as his bed hit the pillow and before he knew it he heard the familiar alarm of his phone. It took him a couple of minutes to get oriented to where he was, then he decided to wake Chris, who was still sound asleep.

“Come on mate, its almost half past seven”

Chris blinked his eyes open. “Shit, already? Ok”

They both showered and got dressed and went downstairs where Dean was waiting for them. “You guys going to have breakfast or anything?”

“Nah mate, we will grab something after we do this photo business. Make it an late breakfast or early lunch” said Brett.

“No worries, lets hit the road. Do you know where you are going?”

Chris nodded his head and they left the lobby. It was only eight am but it was just as hot and hazy as the day before. Brett could feel himself sweating instantly. 'We will spend all of our money on water at this rate' he thought. They made their way through the rush hour crowd to the train station. It appeared rush hour was twenty four hours a day here. The rail network impressed Brett, it was fast efficient and it seemed you never had to wait more than five minutes for a train. “Which station was it again mate?” asked Chris.

“Raffles Place I think it's called. After a few more stops the train goes underground”

“Wow cool. These trains are unbelievable”

They soon arrived at their station and disembarked the train. They pushed through the crowd with Dean following close behind, filming. They go to the top of the steps when they heard a shout behind them. “Oh Shit”

Dean lost his footing just before he got to the top of the steps and Brett just caught a glimpse of him tumbling back down the stairs. He quickly tried to run towards the steps, but it was hard trying to go against the flow of people. He eventually got to the top of the stairs and saw Dean trying to pick himself up from the ground. A few people had gathered and were helping him, the camera was also on the ground but seemingly intact. “You ok mate?” he called down.

“Yeah I think so. My feet got tangled up with some others and down I went. Lucky the camera is ok”

Brett made his way down the stairs and helped him up. Dean had a bit of a limp but he was more shaken than injured. They got to the top where Chris was waiting.

“Enjoy your trip mate?” he said, winking.

“Yeah good on you” Dean said gruffly, but eventually also ad a laugh. “Mate that was close. Luckily there were so many people, they broke my fall somewhat”

“Lucky you didn't land on one of the locals and kill them” said Chris.

Dean looked to Brett. “Is your mate here a comedian when he's at home?”

Chris chimed in before Brett could say anything. “Nah mate. Celebrity, superstar, awesome surfer and heart breaker, but not a comedian”

“This is going to be a long trip” added Brett

“Not wrong”

There was still a haze in there air, and it was still just as hot. They walked for around ten minutes and finally found the Merlion statue. It was quite breathtaking, a large statue of a lion standing up and there was a fountain of water coming out of it's mouth into the pond below. Brett gave Dean his camera and they took shots from different angles.

“Well that's us” said Chris. Singapore done and dusted. This was easy.

“Don't speak too soon mate” said Brett. “It's only a small island, It will get a hell of a lot tougher from here”

“Not for a celebrity such as me”

“Here we go again”

They went to a nearby shopping mall to see if they could get some food. The mall was huge, full of department and smaller stores, and had a food court. Most importantly it was air conditioned. They found their way to the food court and began perusing the options. There was a Mcdonalds and a KFC, plus a host of Chinese, Indian and Malaysian speciality food shops. Brett decided on Indian and got some lamb korma on rice with pappadums whilst Chris and Dean opted for some pork stirfry from the Chinese store. They sat down and were eating when they heard a voice behind them. “Well if it isn't the boys from the sunshine state”

They turned around and saw the two friends from Tasmania. They were also buying food and joined them at their table. “So when did you guys get here” asked one of the Tasmanians.

“Late yesterday. I think most of us would be the same” answered Brett.

“I dunno mate. You wern't on our flight though I noticed”

“Yeah we did something a little different. I might tell you at the end of the competition” Brett said laughing.

“You guys are cagy. Have you done your picture yet? We just did ours then”

“Yeah, all done. Where are you guys staying anyway?”

“Just down the road from here, behind city hall, how about you?”

“Geylang. It's ok, close to the train and all that”

They continued to eat and chat. The boys were in no hurry and were not keen to go back out into the heat just yet. They sat there and watched the masses of people go by and it was almost two pm when they decided to make a move. They headed out to find the train station and headed back to the hotel. The two boys told Dean they would meet him downstairs at four so they could head to the airport, then had turns at going in the shower and packing.

This time they arrived at the lobby before Dean. He hobbled in a few minutes later, and his limp was noticeably worse.

“Foot still sore mate?” asked Brett.

“Yeah it got worse when it cooled down. I put some ice on it but it's swollen up like a balloon. I'll live though I guess, I have had worse” he said, pointing just below his knee “That's from a landmine in Cambodia, two metres closer and my leg was gone”

It was rush hour as usual, and they crammed themselves onto the train, there was hardly any room to move so Dean did not get a chance to do any filming at all. As the train got closer to the airport the crowd had thinned a little and they managed to find a seat. They got to the airport and checked in for their flight without seeing any of the other teams. “Maybe we can build a little lead” said Chris.

“Yeah for sure. Shall we eat here or wait until we get there? It's only 45 minutes on the plane” asked Brett.

“I reckon eat here. There's a huge food court, who know what will be open or what is around our hotel. Where is it we are staying anyway?”

“Yeah good idea mate. It's a suburb called Gajang. About thirty minutes by train to the city, but only about 15 minutes on the train. We do a changeover somewhere, it's written down in my notebook. You coming for a bite Dean?”

“Yeah mate, I could do with a feed too”

After eating, they went to their gate and before they could even sit down the boarding announcement was made. “One down, 19 to go hey” said Brett.

“Yep. Let's hope they all go as easily as this one did” said Chris, smiling as he joined the line.
