DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

A Comparative Analysis of Romeo & Juliet versus West Side Story and the Origin of Mankind’s Greatest Dilemma

B y S i n g u l a r N e w m a n

Well now that’s quite a title but I must warn the reader that I will at best fly by at Mach 3 over these before mentioned topics and I shall have to do so in order to distill this fascinating topic on the following three pages. Essence is more potent than quantity and quality always trumps quantity, unless were talking gold bullion or actual tangible assets but when talking about love, it’s essence is the strongest of all. Therefore the origin of man’s troubles starts and finishes with the question of love. Studying the written pages of history one will see many, many actual cases of actual wars being started between nation states, all due to love and hate.

The love, between man and woman, the most dangerous bond of all, the elixir of life perhaps. In love one risks all, surrenders all, sacrifices all and bets all, be it in the past, present and the future, the definition of love will never change. You know love when your life is become someone else’s, when you cease to be you and become we. When rather than a day apart, you’d choose none. Such is the story of true love, the all consuming passion between the heroes of the Romeo and Juliet story as told by Shakespeare in the year 1592.

The story of Romeo and Juliet 1) is a story Shakespeare borrowed and revised, written originally by Arthur Brooke, and titled The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet. However, this play was as well based on a French version written by Pierre Boiastau who himself was inspired by the 1554 Italian work of Matteo Bandello, a gifted monk who wrote over 214 tales. Monseigneur Bandello was perhaps alluding to an even earlier Greek mythological tale of Pyramis and Thisbe. All in all when I try to pinpoint the source of this glorious tale I find that it is useless for the actual plot happens in the here and now. I have seen this force called love act upon the inhabitants of this great planet with such force that it literally turns them into burning flames, consumed to ashes of dust and smoldering heaps of ruin, love conquers all and always. Love is the force that we gravitate around, perhaps the whole Universe with countless infinite galaxies all revolve around love.

The opposite of love is hate, or perhaps it is simpler than that, for the very absence of love constitutes that which always stands in opposition.

The story of Romeo and Juliet is a story of two young souls, falling in love at the wrong time, in the wrong place and with the wrong people. However, because we’re talking about love, it made everything right. The two lovers transcended time and space together, the haters having simply become lifeless props on the tapestry of time. All one remembers from the story of Romeo and Juliet over time is that a man loved a woman and she loved him dearly. Even the hate that conspired from the dark shadows to end their love, did not succeed, even in death, love was stronger. The success of love over all, that is the story of Romeo and Juliet and its birth place is the human heart. It started when time started, no, it started before time was kept. It is love who was and is and will be and we who are the simple passer byes, fortunate enough to be allowed a faint glimpse of its brilliant splendor which shines today just as bright as it did in Juliet’s heart that fate full day she chose to rather sleep eternally rather than be deprived of her true love. If its love that moves the stars, it moves the hearts and counts the times, than this story will be always told as long as we have hands and eyes to see and write.

West Side Story 2) is the most successful modern adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. The script was penned by Arthur Laurentes with the music score composed by none other than Leonard Bernstein and lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim. Masters of their craft, the producers of West Side Story chose to draw parallels between the old fashioned rivalry of the competing clans, the Capulet and Montague by setting the stage in modern New York City, illustrating rivalry between gangs competing over turf. The love naturally develops between a girl and a boy from the opposite sides. Maybe this is where the phrase opposites always attract come from. The Jets, a white gang is at war with the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang. Tony, whose past ran deep with the Jets, falls for Maria, a Puerto Rican girl affiliated with the Sharks. Long story short they fall deeply in love and the rest of the story starts to gravitate around them. The West Side plot manages to be quite dramatic and heart wrenching but it contains a major difference. In the end the two clans reconcile together after Tony is killed in the arms of Maria. Maria is left alive unlike in the original Romeo and Juliet play. This actually works better as adapted to modern times I believe. The tragedy is the same, a love denied by hate, revenge and violence, a story that is quite at home on America’s ghetto’s streets unfortunately.

I myself have experienced this loss and separation while growing up in America. I’ve lost many childhood friends to the monster that is hate and un-forgiveness. West Side Story is a colorful and beautifully illustrated play of modern America. Perhaps fashions and haircuts have changed and guns replaced switch blades but hate today runs just as deep and yet today as in Shakespeare’s England, 500 years ago, love burns just as bright in our hearts, ready to take on any challenge no matter the cost. This is the genesis of man’s misery as well as man’s hopes and dreams. In closing I’d like to add that I could have written a lengthy article about who and what and where, and other wordy interpretations of Romeo & Juliet but I was more interested in the human condition, the tragedy and emotion behind the tragedy, the kindle that lights the fire in the mind and heart of man.
