DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

My Top 5 Open Source Programs

Open source is a great thing. Whether it be a book that someone contributed to the community, or a piece of software that someone developed of others to use and pick apart for free, open source is always my number 1 choice of program alternatives. This list is not in any particular order, it is just my list. 1 does not mean it is any better than 5.

PHPMyAdmin

PHPMyAdmin is an absolute must-have if you are into web development at all that requires MySQL databases. If you are a web developer, you certainly know how annoying and time wasting a command line MySQL can be if you are using several databases with several users, or you need to move, delete, or change something in a database. Well PHPMyAdmin adds a nice GUI (Graphical User Interface) to the mix. It allows you to import, export and modify databases on the fly. It is an absolute time saver when it comes to databases, and can allow for a much less stressful work. PHPMyAdmin is available for most operating systems.

VLC Media Player - Available for all Operating Systems

VLC? Who doesn’t know of VLC. As soon as I reformat a windows PC, the first thing I do (Besides antivirus) is install VLC media player. It comes loaded with all of the codecs you could ever want, and if there is one that by some miraculously reason is not there, then there is definitely a plugin for it.

VLC is a robust, clean and completely free media player. For those with laptops that like to watch movies on them or TV shows, you know how hard it can be sometimes to hear the audio. Well, VLC has an option that allows you to surpass the limits and boost the audio. Before I got this macbook, I used a 400$ Gateway PC. I watched movies on it on Windows media player, but it was barely audible. I installed VLC and that made it 10 times better than what it was.

So, if you are looking for a fully featured, clean and open sourced media player, try out VLC.

qBittorrent - Available For All Operating Systems

When you say the word torrent you think of 2 things (well I do anyway) uTorrent or ThePirateBay. Well A while back I started looking for alternatives to uTorrent, and started the hunt for a new bit torrent client.

I stumbled across qBittorent. Just as lightweight as uTorrent, but it is open source, with no annoying ads, no premium features so you get the whole package right from install. It has everything you would want from a torrent client such as built in search engine, advanced control over your trackers, easy torrent creation, torrent queueing and prioritizing, IP filtering, etc. It is absolutely the best torrent client I have ever used. It is updated reguraly and the community around it is huge.

So check it out, and ditch the closed source torrent clients.

Anomos - Available on OSX, Windows and Linux

This one you probably never heard of. Anomos is an anonymous bittorrent protocol that encrypts the torrent you are downloading or uploading so that it cannot be traced. It has yet to gain any real traction in the internet world, but I would imagine that it will eventually. It is a secure tracker and client, it is ad-free and open source, and it is censorship resistant.

If you want to use Anomos with normal torrents, you can convert them within the program, and then download them VIA Anomos securely. It really is an ingenious creation.

Tribler - Available On OSX, Windows and Linux

Tribler is a pretty neat application. It is a TV streamer, torrent application and a fully decentralized network all in one. You can search inside of the Tribler network to find whatever torrent you want to get, there is voting for your favorite torrents, wiki style channels, No Ads and it is open source.

It does take a little higher resources than most torrent apps, but if you can run Vuze or anything similar, you wont have any trouble using it. I am just comparing it to uTorrent in terms of system resources.
