DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

Rift Summerfest 2014 Opinions

Being that I knocked out all of the scavenger hunts for Summerfest 2014 and have seen a lot of people in-game sharing their opinions, I decided it's my time to do so as well. This was a long event, and a lot was learned from it (as well as some requests for the next one).

I want to start off by saying that by following the Summerfest 2014 guides, things became a lot easier. For a lot of the goals, finding out what to do would have been pretty difficult otherwise. With that said, even with the guides there helping, it was definitely not a cake walk.

Dealing With Random Spawns

The biggest annoyance I faced, and many others appear to have as well, was the concept of having random spawns. There is a huge difference between giving players a hard-to-find objective and giving them one that's not only hard to find, but also random. As an example of this, there is the Pristine Sand that was part of Ashora's Great Brevane Scavenger Hunt, Part 2 quest. Not only is the sand somewhat hard to find as it is, but when others are going for it as well it can get to where it's impossible at some times. In fact, it took running between three different supposed locations before I finally found it, in the middle of the night after people were sleeping. In the day, there were so many players looking for them that even if they spawned someone else would likely get to it first. This leaves two choices: sit around waiting or simply try again later. Neither of these is really preferable. A scavenger hunt should be about finding things; not racing the others to try and loot something before they do. Especially when you already know the location!

Doing the Maze

The maze that was part of Seratos' quest in The Great Dusken Scavenger Hunt, Part 2 is something that some players liked and others hated. I will say that it was pretty difficult to get to where the egg sac was, but not because of the maze itself but rather than view you had to be in to move around within it. In fact, it took a while before I figured out that the maze was constantly shifting; at first I thought I was being bounced around or “sucked” into the walls by moving to the wrong location. It wasn't until I was on the top level and next to the egg sac that I was able to see clear enough (while writing the guide) that things were changing around me.

To me, the shifting maze was pretty awesome. I liked that it was ever-changing, as it created confusion without being too much of an annoyance. It was more like a puzzle. Unlike the random spawns elsewhere, that was not the case with this quest. Now, were the egg sac to be a random spawn with different mazes you would have to go through to find the right one, I would feel completely different about this. But with how it was set up, it was pretty enjoyable!

Dealing With Bugs

There were some bugs within the quests, but most worked themselves out over time. By far the most annoying ones were the Steppes of Infinity one where you are supposed to collect 20 piles of gold, and the Iron Pine Peaks one where you are looking for the Book of Riddles.

In the Steppes of Infinity quest, the issue was that the piles of gold were not counting for the quest. As soon as you had hit all 20, though, you would complete the quest (despite the counter never increasing). This caused a lot of confusion because it makes you think that the quest is broken, when it's secretly working.

As for the Iron Pine Peaks quest, the problem was that the orb that opens a portal to enter doesn't always work. Sometimes it will glow as if it's already activated, yet no portal will be there. Other times it won't even glow (meaning it's usable) but still wouldn't be able to be activated. It took many hours of trying randomly and server skipping before I was able to finally finish this quest.

Getting Ravensong, the Ash Walker

While the journey to get Ravensong, the Ash Walker is a bit long, it's really not as hard as it could be. Almost every step within it deals with simply buying something. For example, the companions can be bought. The artifacts can be bought. Everything else can be bought as well, whether it be through the event currency or through the Rift Store Credits. While the cost increases as more things are purchased, it still opens that door for those that want the exclusive mount but don't have the time to go farm for it. In a way, we can consider this as being a “pay to win” mount (with “win” meaning obtain), being that those with enough money can (assuming the market supports it) purchase it.

On to You

I'd love to hear from you as well! What did you like or dislike about the event? What do you think should be changed for the 2015 version? Did you complete everything and get your Ravensong mount? Drop a comment down below and let us know your opinions!
