”Ringing” in the Ears

It’s very common for persons to experience “ringing” in the ears or “head noise”. It may occur as an isolated incident, something that comes and goes, or a constant annoyance. It can vary in intensity from rather mild to more severe. The pitch may be low or high.

The cause for tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, may be:

  • Cerumen (wax) accumulation in the ear canal
  • Perforations of the tympanic membrane (eardrum)
  • Fluid in the middle ear
  • Changes in pressure of the fluid in the middle ear
  • Inflammation to the organ of Corti in the ear

Ringing in the ears is not a disease, but a symptom. When the causative agent is removed or corrected, the symptom usually disappears. A more detailed analysis can be done by an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist).

Difficult Sleep

Sleep patterns vary from person to person. Some people seem to be able to survive quite well on six hours of sleep, while others require eight, nine, or even 10 hours of sleep.

The causes of sleeplessness are many. For some it may be a nagging cough, frequent episodes of urination, itching, or pain. Others experience shortness of breath, or the inability to let go of the day's problems.

Watching television late into the evening may make one unable to settle down for a period following a particularly exciting program. The use of pharmaceuticals can alter sleep patterns, as can stimulating drinks or foods or noisy or uncomfortable surroundings.

The solution depends largely upon the root causes. Freeing the mind of problems and worries of the day or the issues of tomorrow is an important approach before retiring.

Often a neutral bath - not cold, not hot - at a soothing and relaxing temperature may well be the answer to a troublesome or particularly stressful day. A warm, non-caffeinated drink may also be employed.

Settling down with the Scriptures before retiring, reading the Psalms or other comforting passages, may allow the mind to adapt to an environment more conducive to sleep, as well as prepare the mind for higher themes.

A quiet time before retiring is the order of the day. Don't count sheep. Count the blessings for which we are all undeserving.
