The recent increased understanding in medical fields like brain science, brain imaging, neuroscience and molecular genetics, suggest that laughter can be included in treatments for cancer, dementia, depression and other bodily ailments. Lately, doctors try not to treat the patients’ disease as a separate malady. Unless is viral, every illness is endogenous. That means it originates from within the organism. Knowing the fact that there is no foreign intruder who wants to harm the body, it’s obvious that the body can protect itself. For some ailments, humor therapy is maybe the only thing the patient is missing. In order to treat one illness, the patient’s familial, economic, personal and social backgrounds should be observed. The entire environment causes the illness and it’s never just stress, hard work or too much McDonald's happy meals. Everyone’s life setting is organized and structured to details to make that person who he or she is. We all plan our lunch and dinner, make arrangements to see a movie and decide whether we want to spend our weekends in front of the TV or try something new for a change. So, if your doctor suggests a humor therapy, don’t disregard the idea just because it’s new or you’ve never heard of it before. Hundreds of studies have been made to prove that laughter really is the best medicine. And after dozens of neuropsychological and near-infrared spectroscopy investigations now we can sum up and count out loud the benefits of a good laugh.

Why Doctors Suggest You Laugh More Often?

David Copperfield designed the Project Magic to help kids as well as grownups to cope better with their treatments, because magic tricks make people happy. Most hospitals around the world have humor therapy as part of their recovery program, for the reason that positive feelings are rarely projected behind those walls. In many hospitals there are drama therapies, music therapies, animal-assisted therapies, aromatherapies, gardening, shiatsu, yoga and moxibustion, among other alternative treatments, but humor therapy is indoctrinated and initiated almost everywhere. A doctor can tell you that inside everyone, there are two types of emotions: positive and negative. When a negative emotional pattern is present, the sympathetic nervous system becomes dominant. This part of the nervous system is responsible for waking you up in the morning, making you feel assertive and ready for action and triggers your survival instinct. Too much activity in this part of the brain can induce negative feelings, like fear, anger and tension, and make you feel preoccupied, impulsive and insecure without any rational reason. When the sympathetic nervous system is prevailing, it activates the fight-or-flight response or the acute stress response. This response is a normal bodily reaction when a person is under an attack, perceived a dangerous experience or is otherwise life threatened. That is why sick people need positive emotions more than actual medication. To bring the body back to its natural equilibrium. The second part of the nervous system, the parasympathetic system is working on making your body and mind calm, relaxed and renewed. This system is activated after the body was under a lot of stress or pain, but it also activates when you’re laughing. That is why you feel sleepy after a good laugh, that caused you stomach pain and left you in tears. When this part of the nervous system is working, our bodies store energy, the blood vessels dilate and heart rate slows down. All these functions don’t always happen simultaneously, but selectively as the body needs them. Either way, when the body is lead by this part of the nervous system, we can experience positive emotions like joy, bliss, euphoria and exhilaration, among many others. What’s best about laughter treatments is the fact that you can medicate yourself, there is no prescription and you can’t overdose yourself even if you want to. Nothing bad will come out of it, unless you make too many jokes at someone else's expense.

Using Laughter as a Defense Mechanism

Almost always, when we see someone slipping and falling, our first reaction is laughter. Especially when we were younger and still haven’t developed our consciousness so well to believe that the tumbled person might actually be in a dangerous and painful position. That is our brain forcing us to believe that the scene we’ve seen is not so life threatening. Even though this phenomenon may not be very healthy if it’s the first natural reaction in every stressful situation, it prepares the mind for the upcoming shock. Charles Darwin, Freud, Glenn Weisfield and many evolutionary human development scientists believed that laughter is an adaptive human behavior. We are the only species that laugh and we embrace that behavior as babies. Sometimes laughter is used as a defense mechanism, sometimes it’s a unique way of coping with everyday problems and stress. Of course, none of your problems will be solved by making jokes, but on that matter, none of them will be solved if you worry constantly over them. The difference between these two different types of behavior is the fact that laughter relieves stress and releases the happy hormones. The amount of endorphins released during a good belly laugh is the same amount of hormones released during jogging. Half an hour spent giggling will have general benefits like improved respiration, balanced heart work and increased levels of immunoglobulin. Immunoglobulin is the protein the body produces to find and fight foreign objects in the system, like viruses and bacteria. In fact, in 1996 it was found that laughter strengthens the immune system better than meditation and relaxing techniques. In 1979 an American author, political journalist, world peace advocate and professor was diagnosed with collagen disorder. He soon checked out of the hospital and checked into a hotel. He spent his days watching funny movies and Candid Camera episodes. He kept taking the medications his doctors prescribed and denied that laughter cured his disease, but said that the time spent laughing provided him with a pain free, good night's sleep. The endorphins released are natural painkillers. Later, a study was made to prove the fact that laughter comforts pain. Participants were divided into groups. The first group was watching funny movies like Friends, Mr. Bean and South Park, while the second group watched documentaries. After their fun time, frozen wine coolers were placed on their upper arms to see how long they can take it. The test proved that participants who watched funny movies had higher endorphin levels and improved pain tolerance than the participants who watched documentaries. You may not be able to recover quickly solely on funny movies, but the recovery time will certainly be less painful and lots of fun.

Laughter is a Social Lubricant

It’s more than obvious that when you’re feeling down, neither you nor anyone you know wants to hang out with you. Until recently, the sounds and cackles of laughter were vaguely researched and explained. Now we know that being playful in a group brings you closer together with the rest of the individuals, as well as improve your social status within the group. We as humans are extremely social and interactive species. We are capable of developing deep emotions for other human beings, sacrifice for the welfare of others and create bonds unlike any other species on the planet. Singing, dancing and laughing are all related behaviors. They improve and strengthen the bonding mechanism and make the communication easier. Darwin said that laughter is tickling the mind, but it also breaks the tension in a group. A smile is a universal ice breaker, despite color, race, age and social background. In every culture a good joke is an accepted stimulus for social interaction, whether you prefer political, sexists, stereotypical or self-effacing humor. Social interactions, such as jokes are identified with positive emotional experience, and therefore bring people closer together. It lessens the negative atmosphere and tension. That is why politicians tell a joke or two before their speech. That type of interaction calms and relaxes the crowds and leave more room for an approachable communication. Voiced laughter is even more powerful, because a study showed that hearing and feeling the vibration of laughter activates the key emotion region in the brain called the amygdala. Another great effect of laughter on social crowds is coordination. When everyone’s attention is placed on the same thing, the group becomes more powerful because they can synchronize and join their experiences and actions. Emotions are easily transmitted between people. Negative feelings are just the same contagious as positive ones. But if you spread a negative atmosphere, the group won’t be cooperative for very long. Bad decision making result from negative feelings and the sooner they are weeded out, the better will be the outcome of every situation. You don’t have to be the designated clown in amongst your friends, but a positive spirit will make you and those around you feel good. No one wants a fuddy-duddy and those types of people rarely have more than one friend. Everyone’s aim in life is to feel happy and we all know a good joke can get you there every time. Or if it’s very funny, maybe even multiple times.
