All Eyes On The Future

New technology fast-tracks learning, Del Monte Foundation has partnered with IBM Philippines, Inc., thru the IBM KidSmart Early Learning Program to bring new technology tools and educational materials to the rural classroom. IBM's global initiative towards school reform and improvement, first introduced in the United States, has expanded to Philippine public schools. DMFI Exec. Director Bella Quimpo, IBM Corporate Citizenship & Corporate Affairs Professional Mildred Parbo, and Bukidnon Schools Division Superintendent Ingrid Racoma welcomed the participation of District Supervisors Linda Jumangito (Libona), Jocelyn Flores (Sumilao) and Elpedio Lomarda (lmpasug-ong), and school principal Annabelle Lariba (Puerto, Cagayan de Oro) in the program. Other public and private schools in the region have also received support from Del Monte in the form of supplemental books, teaching aides, and teachers' training.

Improved heath via deworming, some 80,000 schoolchildren in 20 municipalities in Bukidnon are taking part in a deworming program organized this school year by Del Monte Foundation in coordination with the Department of Education. Worm infections, while not life-threatening, can result in poor health which can be a barrier to school attendance and a more productive life in adult years. Last year, 46,000 children in Bukidnon benefitted from the program as Del Monte and school authorities continue to campaign for improved health and sanitation practices in rural villages.

Friends of Del Monte support scholars, each year, on the greens of the famous Del Monte championship golf course in Cawayanon, hundreds of business partners and friends of Del Monte gather for the Del Monte Pineapple Tee Golf Tournament. Their favorite game has become a bridge towards growing the future of children living around the plantation and production facilities. Funds raised in the tourney since its launch (thru player registration and sponsorship fees) provide additional funds to send more children to school. This school year, DMFI supports a total of 376 scholars, 110 of whom are Barrio Scholars.

Eco-Sustainability Calls For United Efforts

In the upland barangay of Balubal in Cagayan de Oro, Del Monte Foundation supports a community nursery that grows fruit and forest trees that help green the local landscape.

DMFI partners with BISFFA (Balubal lntegrated Social Forestry Farmers Association) led by president RamiI Agus, Sangguniang Barangay of Balubal under Barangay Captain Pablo Bactung and DENR CLENRO (City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office) under Elizabeth Sumabong for this eco-sustainability project, now on its fourth year. DMFI provides polyethylene bags, seeds, fertilizers and other inputs, and funds a Food-For-Work-Program for farmers who grow seeds in two greenhouses, each filled with 40,000 seedlings. In past three years, the nursery produced 240,000 seedlings to support the National Greening program. From this nursery, some 35 Del Monte Scholars acquired 800 seedlings that they planted at Plantation's Field 4. Community youth and other groups also learn farming technologies and eco-practices at the nursery's two-storey training center, whose construction was funded by Del Monte.

Eco-future, to mark Del Monte Philippines' foundation day, Cannery and 8ugo Offices volunteers led by Mindanao Operations Group Head Emmanuel Nisperos, Manufacturing Director Francisco Molas and Mindanao Procurement Senior Manager Gina Tiberio-Malaluan conduct coastal clean-up of the shoreline of Macajalar Bay, one of Mindanao's largest bays and home to many marine species. Cannery volunteers have rendered over 2,000 man hours to clean the shoreline in barangays Puerto and Bugo in last four years.

New Home

15 Bugo employees receive keys to new houses built for them by employer Del Monte Philippines.

“Thanks to Del Monte for this free house-and-lot!” said Walter Tabique, 32, of his new home at Gawad Kalinga Escriva Heights in barangay Bugo. Walter (with wife Rowena and children Heart Angel, 7, and Arlene Claire, 6) lost his home to Sendong's waters in Dec. 16, 2011. No less than Del Monte Pacific Ltd. CEO Joselito Campos, Jr. had personally met and assured employee-survivors of the Company's support.

Del Monte Foundation joined hands with Gawad Kalinga and the Office of Cagayan de Oro 1st District Representative Rufus Rodriquez (also an alumnus of Del Monte's Scholarship Program) which put up 1.25 M Pesos, for the housing project. Del Monte Philippines donated 1.25 M Pesos and facilitated the provision of basic utilities (water, electricity) to make the homes livable. Through this project, Del Monte honors its commitment to help employee-victims of calamities.
