DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

Guild Wars 2 World vs World Ranks Should Be Account Wide

One of the latest features for the world vs world system within Guild Wars 2 is the addition of ranks and skills that can be learned (with points earned from ranking up). These help reward players with things they can utilize in world vs world, helping give some more benefits to joining the massive fights over castles. While I do think that the ranking and skill system is an awesome addition, and I really do like the perks, I can not help but feel that there is one big thing lacking: it should be account wide.

I sort of view world vs world ranking as being a type of progression, but not along the same lines as normal leveling up. With world vs world, each battle is different and you are constantly getting fresh new content as a result. PvE leveling would be different, in that you are doing the same thing over and over. As such, I think that the world vs world is a separate breed all on its own. So why do I feel that the system should be based on the entire account, rather than the character you are on?

Well, while I love how the system works, there is one big flaw. It is a massive grind. For people who want to get their perks on many different characters (or alts), it is just not feasible with how it currently works. From a time commitment stand point alone, it would simply take way too much to keep multiple characters leveling up. Even after spending days pretty much no lifing the world vs world zones, I am still a pretty low rank (below 15). While it is a pretty steady leveling speed, I can not imagine how long it would take to do this on three or four characters, while trying to keep them all ready. And this is a pretty important thing, especially for world vs world, because a lot of us love using it as a way to level up our characters. As such, allowing us to jump in to the battles with some perks we got before would go a long ways. Some might argue that we did not “earn” them, but in all actuality we did; just on a different character. I think a game that hit this pretty perfectly was Rift, although it did take a while. With Rift, this was the form of alternative advancement. At first it was bound to each specific character, and then they revamped it to make it account wide.

I would even be willing to take a bit of a sacrifice to make this all work. If the system were made to where it is harder to level (or there are additional tiers added that are difficult to get to) but was account wide, that would work for me. I just like being able to work at progression regardless as to which character I am on. I really do not like being forced to go through the same progression farming (or grinding, in this case) on every character I want to play. And since Guild Wars 2 is a heavy PvP game, where the world vs world is one of the biggest selling points, I think it makes sense to make it more accessible to all of the characters you want to run it on. The worst feeling is knowing that after going through all this work on one character, you might decide you like a different one more later and have to do it all over again. This is one of the biggest walls that keeps players from taking the time and effort to go after the achievements, and in this case it hurts not only them but everyone else that is on their side in world vs world. The perks are important, and can sometimes be the difference between being able to take a structure and not.
