DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

Guild Wars 2 Structured PvP Needs a Ready Check

After playing in a lot of structured PvP matches over the past week, I have come to the conclusion that Guild Wars 2's PvP system is missing a very vital feature: a ready check. This is what has been leading to matches starting with less than five players on a team, and sometimes as few as three or two, depending. The bad part about this is that it is something that is, or at least should be, a very easy fix.

How Ready Checks Help

When a match is being created, it pulls in the number of players it needs for both teams. In the case of Guild Wars 2, this is a total of ten players (five per side). By adding in a ready check, the game can determine whether or not all ten players are actually at the computer at the time, as well as whether or not they are wanting to take part in PvP at the time. For example, there have been times I have sat in the queue for 20+ minutes. When this happens, sometimes other things come up that I have to deal with. Maybe the restroom. Maybe I had to go get the door. There are numerous things that can happen, and I can not always sit at the screen waiting on the match to pop up (or in some cases just forget about it altogether). As a result, I have had many periods where I come back to the computer and find that the match has already started.

By doing a ready check, if someone is not ready the match does not start. Along with this, it would wait a certain period of time, say a minute, and would then remove that person from the queue and try out the next person. As soon as ten people accept the queue, it would then jump in to the match and everyone is happy, with full teams! This would resolve the issue of starting with less than a full team.

What About Group Droppers?

Adding a ready check will do nothing to keep people from dropping groups when their team is winning, but it is not supposed to. There are punishments already in place for people who do this, and when it comes down to it, it is not worth dropping a group anyways, being that you can not do anything else until the match is over and you still earn points and gold just by taking part. Add on the punishment that effectively bans you from PvP for a while, and it just makes no sense to do it. Of course, some players are still going to do this because they do not want to hang around, but this is just part of the game and is something we can not do anything about. In any case, the goal of the ready check is simply to ensure that the teams are equal to start with.

Conclusion

I think it is pretty clear that Guild Wars 2 needs to have a ready check of some type for its structured PvP queues. This will make taking part in them much more enjoyable, and it will help contribute to less problems we have within the matches. Nothing is more detrimental to morale than joining a match to find that it is going to be something like 3 vs. 5. In most cases when this happens, people will just give up without even trying, and it ends up turning in to a perpetual cycle where it kills the mood for doing structured PvP.
