DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

P

  • PBAOE
    • Point Blank Area Of Effect
      • Acronym, used to dictate any area of effect centered on the user of the ability such as BLM’s Blizzard II which requires no target (due to it being centered on the caster) and is considered a PBAOE.
        • Example Sentence: “Garuda’s Downburst is a PBAOE, so be sure to stand well behind her!”
  • PC
    • Personal Computer
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “I just got FFXIV: ARR on PC, it’s so much different than PS3, I don’t get the lag or the tearing on the screen like I used to!”
  • PC
    • Playable Character
      • Acronym, any character that can be or is being played by a real person. This includes GMs though they are not generally called PCs for obvious reasons.
        • Example Sentence: “I think this character shouting over here is a PC, at first I thought he was one of the random FATE characters lol!”
  • PGL
    • Pugilist
  • PIE
    • Piety
        • Example Sentence: “With a bit more PIE I’ll be able to cast an extra Fire in my rotation without bottoming out my MP and going OOM!”
  • Pot
    • Potion
      • Shorthand, potions in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn aren’t as useful or as required (hardly at all, if at all truthfully) as in many other MMORPGs. Potions generally are very short lived and add small to moderate bonuses with the exception of the stat boosting ones, of which those only last at best for a handful of attacks and don’t boost damage as much as it would seem they should. In this way most people rarely use, much less carry potions of various types with them as they’re entirely unnecessary. See: Final Fantasy XIV - Consumables and Final Fantasy XIV - Alchemist and Final Fantasy XIV - Alchemist Recipes
        • Example Sentence: “Anybody have any STR pots to spare? I could really use some to burst my DPS when the Dreadnaught spawns.”
  • Proc
    • Process / Processed Random Event
      • Shorthand, originally from MUDs, which were text based fantasy adventures, the very first online extension of a table top game and the MMORPG precursor. Proc is short for Processed Random Event, such as having a Critical Hit Chance at 15%, then whenever that 15% processes (procs) and turns into a crit, that random event has successfully processed or proc’d thus leading to the term. When a crit or anything that has a chance goes off, that is referred to as a proc. See: Final Fantasy XIV - Stats
        • Example Sentence: “Free Cure just proc’d! I love getting free Cure IIs so much!”
  • PS2
    • Playstation 2
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “PS2 limitations will never haunt Final Fantasy again, though maybe we’ll get PS3 limitations if they aren’t careful.”
  • PS3
    • Playstation 3
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “The PS3 is a lower quality version of the PC and PS4 version, I hope they don’t start hamstringing the game and its engine because of the lower graphical detail of PS3. A lot of people are worried about that after FFXI.”
  • PS4
    • Playstation 4
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “The PS4 should have quality on par with the PC, at least for a year or two until the PC graphics update again and hopefully SE will keep Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn’s graphics up to the current trends instead of letting it fall behind like every other MMORPG out there.”
  • Pull / Puller / Pulling
    • Term, the NA equivalent of Fishing. Used to denote when a person is going to aggro mobs and bring them back to a specified point.
      • Example Sentence: “Get into position, I’m going to pull the tonberries back to us!”
  • PvE
    • Player Versus Environment / Enemy
      • Acronym, used to denote when the players will be fighting scripted encounters such as monsters and dungeons of any sort. Pretty much anything and everything that is not fighting against another player is considered PvE and while many people like it, there are others that dislike it since every encounter is scripted and hardly random once a trained person gets everything down without an issue.
        • Example Sentence: “PvE is the core of almost all MMORPGs and I’m okay with that, but I really hope that FFXIV will some day have a good PvP aspect that’s not just an afterthought.”
  • PvP
    • Player Versus Player
      • Acronym, used to denote when two or more players fight against each other either directly or indirectly such as racing or competing against one another in some other way than open combat. A good example would be Capture Point games and Capture the Flag games. See: Final Fantasy XIV - PvP
        • Example Sentence: “I hope we get CP maps for PvP, just running out and slaughtering each other is fun for a few minutes but it gets obscenely boring really fast.”
  • Pwned
    • Owned
      • Term, a more extravagant and intensive version of Owned though sometimes people simply prefer to speak in ‘1337speak’ to mock or otherwise chide a player.
        • Example Sentence: “I just got pwned so hard by that Twister.”

Q

  • QQ
    • Shorthand / Emote, (1) Used to denote when somebody is crying as the general emote used to be “Q_Q” which looks like a face that’s crying. QQ is a shortening of that and often used to express when a player is upset or jokingly crying about not getting something they wanted. (2) It’s also used to mock players who are whining or excessively complaining about something.
      • Example Sentences: (1) “I really wished I had rolled a few points higher, I could have gotten that Allagan Scepter QQ” (2) “Keep QQing I’m sure that’ll help you get better.”
  • Quest
    • Term
      • Example Sentence: “I’m going to get a few quests knocked out before I go to bed, get a little exp some gil and slowly but surely I’ll finish all the quests and never see any annoying exclamation points on my map ever again!”

R

  • Rabble
    • Term, often used together or repeated as a general argument such as poking somebody who is complaining excessively or angry in some fashion. It’s also used as a general complain or to show when a person is complaining or upset about something but doesn’t care enough to go on a rant that often disturbs or annoys other players.
      • Example Sentence: “Stupid weekly lock outs on coil bother me so much, rabble rabble rabble!”
  • RMT
    • Real Money Trade / Trader
      • Acronym, used to denote Gilsellers and Gilbuyers alike, people who purchase in game money, with real world money. These people are deeply looked down upon and ridiculed and often get banned in SE’s bi-monthly sweep. RMTers whether buying or selling are berated and hated across most of all MMORPGs to the point that people who buy often try to keep it secret even if they did not risk getting banned because of the negative (and rightly so) stigma attached to it and how the sellers tend to ruin the game or economy in order to fulfill their orders.
        • Example Sentence: “Stupid RMTs running around killing sheep to corner the market on fleece so they can drive up the price and charge us more so they can sell more stupid ass gil, I wish they’d just die already.”
  • Roegadyn
    • Term, playable race within Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. See: Final Fantasy XIV - Races
      • Example Sentence: “Roegadyn look so much more muscular and less flabby and fat like their cousins the Galkas in Final Fantasy XI!”
  • ROFL
    • Rolling On The Floor Laughing
      • Acronym, used as a more intense way to show a person is laughing. As with most things on the internet, can easily be used (based on context) in a mocking, astounded, surprised or joking way.
        • Example Sentence: “I can’t believe I survived that ROFL!”
  • RQ
    • Real Quick
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “I just need to grab some Electrum Ingots from my inventory RQ!”

S

      • Example Sentence: “Goodnight guys, I’ll be logging as soon as I can get to the nearest Sanctuary.”
  • SE
    • Standard Edition
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “I got the SE when they re-released the game, and I really wish I had gotten the CE for the bonuses, but it turns out they let you buy the CE as the upgrades only!”
  • SE
    • Square Enix
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “SE is taking a long time putting out patches, they said every 2 to 4 months but it’s constantly closer to 4 months! 2.1 came out on the 17th of December and 2.2 will be out in March, I bet it’ll get pushed back to April!”
  • Soak
    • Term, used to denote any action that soaks up damage by reducing the damage taken to the person(s) using said spell or ability. Good examples of this are Stoneskin (soaks up damage before damage can hurt you) and Shield Oath (reduces incoming damage by 20%. See: Final Fantasy XIV Advanced Tactics - Mitigation
      • Example Sentence: “Don’t worry about me, I’ve got Galvanize and Stoneskin on, I can soak up anything they can throw at me!”
  • Solo
    • Term used to denote a person who goes by themselves either by choice or because the particular encounter requires it.
      • Example Sentence: “I’m going to go do this quest solo real quick!”
  • Spam
    • Term, used to denote a particular skill or spell that’s used excessively or repeatedly over and over without pause, usually negatively.
      • Example Sentence: “He just kept spamming Heavy Thrust, never used any other DRG ability, I’ve rarely seen a worse player.”
  • Spawn
    • Term, used to denote a particular location where a mob or group will appear when they enter the instance or game, or to refer when a mob in particular will appear.
      • Example Sentence: “When the Dreadknight spawns it’ll be right on Twintania’s tail after I position her, to be sure to be ready to stun it!”
  • SS
    • Screenshot
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “I am definitely taking a SS of that, I’ve never seen a roll of 99 followed immediately by 1 LOL!”
  • Static
    • Term, used to denote a group of people who do things together constantly, usually to a set schedule. Statics benefit from knowing each other, if not being friendly then at least learning each other’s skillsets and compensating for each other, working a lot better as a group than constantly changing out party members every attempt. Statics are almost required for conquering the hardest content of the game early on.
      • Example Sentence: “I was invited to join a Coil Static that runs Friday and Saturday at 8PM EST, I’d join but I don’t have enough time to dedicate myself to that timeframe every single week.”
  • STF
    • Special Task Force
      • Acronym, a group of GMs and SE employees who focus on rooting out RMT activities, hackers, cheaters and exploiters, gathering up information and confirming they are doing any of the aforementioned and then issuing counter measures and banning them.
        • Example Sentence: “The STF has significantly made great strides in preventing RMT spam over shout channels and RMT tells too.”
  • STR
    • Strength
        • Example Sentence: “I need more STR to hit the next Parry Mitigation tier or else I’ll never be able to block enough damage to stay alive!”
  • Support
    • Support Role or Class or Job
      • Shorthand, used to denote a class or job whose primary role is to support the other party members by either buffing them or debuffing the mob or mobs. See: Final Fantasy XIV - Bard and Final Fantasy XIV - Scholar
        • Example Sentence: “BRD is the only true support we have right now and really all they do is toss up a song or two now and again but nothing much else.”
  • Synth
    • Synthesis
      • Shorthand, refers to crafting a recipe. See: Final Fantasy XIV - Crafting
        • Example Sentence: “It always happens without fail as soon as I get 100% quality on a synth I run out of CP somehow because there are no red orbs for me to use Tricks of the Trade on and I can’t boost my progress before my durability runs out!”

T

  • Tank
    • Term, used to refer to a party member whose role is to keep focus on themselves in order to reduce the amount of damage the party incurs. They do this through many different ways of garnering additional enmity while not dealing damage equal to a damage dealer all while having mitigating abilities and the ability to equip higher defense gear and have high HP in order to soak up the damage they incur. The name comes from the obvious mental image of a tank, which is sturdy and strong and very hard to destroy by normal means. See: Final Fantasy XIV - Paladin and Final Fantasy XIV - Warrior
      • Example Sentence: “I love tanking because it’s such a vital role and I like feeling like my input and skill matters rather than feeling like a dime a dozen DPS that can be replaced at the drop of a hat.”
  • Toon
    • Term, used to denote a character or avatar. Often looked down upon because of it’s origins in World of Warcraft which many groups seem to look down upon. It also seems (to some) to invalidate or devalue the connection a player may have with their character or avatar.
      • Example Sentence: “My toon is awesome looking, I love that they’re adding a vanity system and with the barber already in the game I can customize how I look on a daily basis if I want!”
  • TOS
    • Terms Of Service
      • Acronym, the contract all players sign by playing the game, it states that all players will play and perform themselves in a specific manner and among other things won’t cheat or hack or RMT or damage the game in any way. By doing any of those SE has grounds to ban a player at their discretion. Playing the game is the same as accepting the TOS and by doing so effectively signs away any legal right to your character and your time spent on that character.
        • Example Sentence: “Speedhacking is against the TOS, so I don’t do it because I don’t want to get banned!”
  • Train
    • Term, used to denote a group of mobs, generally linked together following after a person or object, the picture of which highly resembles a train with many train cars.
      • Example Sentence: “Watch out I’ve got a train running on me, just let me run them out of range first before you cast on me so they don’t aggro you too.”
