      • Used as an addendum and/or a correction to a statement or correcting a misspelling. Can also be used to comical effect to jokingly correct another’s statement.

      • Used in a variety of ways, from “Yes” / “Confirmed” or even a hello, as the slash looks similar to a waving arm as one would wave to another person.
        • Example Sentences: (1) “Does anybody want to come PvP?” (response:) “/” (2) “Hey guys, good afternoon!” (response:) “/ Hey man” (3) “Let me know when you guys are ready to go.” (response:) “/”

    • Final Fantasy XIV
      • Term / Shorthand, used to refer to the first incarnation of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn which is often just dubbed 1.0. While Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is referred to at 2.0.
        • Example Sentence: “I played since 1.0 was released and I still cry at night over the rested experience and terrible gameplay and five second lag for everything….”

    • Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
      • Term / Shorthand, used to refer to the recently rereleased version of Final Fantasy XIV, called Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Due to how long typing that out is, and player’s penchant for shortening things to easily conveyed messages, 2.0 became the de facto way to explain and denote Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn from its original incarnation.
        • Example Sentence: “Ever since 2.0 came out the player base has been steadily growing, every place I go feels vibrant and alive now!”

    • Accuracy
      • Used in lieu of typing out the elongated word “Accuracy” for quicker referencing. See: Final Fantasy XIV - Stats
        • Example Sentence: “I don’t have enough acc to do Turn 5 on my Summoner yet, I still need more Mythology Tomes to get the Summoner’s Horn!”
  • AF
    • Artifact Armor
      • Acronym, used to describe the iconic set of armor that is associated with each Job and obtained through their Job quest lines.
        • Example Sentence: “I just love the way the Paladin AF looks, it’s so knightly and shiny!”
  • AF
    • Astral Flow
      • Acronym, used from Final Fantasy XI when Summoner’s had an ability called Astral Flow that signaled a powerful attack from their Summon. This is still used to refer to Summoner pet abilities but more specifically are used to refer to Primals whose signature and devastating attacks are still named after the Final Fantasy XI Astral Flow abilities, such as Aerial Blast and Hellfire.
        • Example Sentence: “Make sure all of the pillars are up as much as possible before Garuda uses her AF, or we’ll be instantly killed.”

        • Example Sentence: “ACC for Turn 5 is still around 432 for Melee, AFAIK.”
  • AFAIR
    • As Far As I Remember/Recall
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “Cloud said he’d be on at 8PM AFAIR.”
  • AFK
    • Away From Keyboard
      • Acronym, used to describe when a person will not be there and incapable of responding.
        • Example Sentence: “AFK, my house is burning down!”
  • Aggro
    • Aggressive / Pursuit / Detector
      • Shorthand, used to describe two distinctly different scenarios. (1) When a monster is aggressive and will attack if a player is detected by said monster. (2) When a player has been detected and a monster begins to attack the player.
        • Example Sentences: (1) “Watch out, the Basilisk aggros if you get too close.” (2) “I’ve got agro on the Basilisk guys!”
  • AOE
    • Area Of Effect
      • Acronym, (1) Used to describe the area a certain skill will reach. (1) If a certain skill will affect more than just a single target.
        • Example Sentences: (1) “The AOE on Fireball is about five yalms wide, so be sure to huddle up so everybody can get hit.” (2) “Death Sentence is not an AOE, but Plummet is a conal AOE so don’t stand in front of Twintania!”
  • AP
    • Attribute Points
      • Acronym, used to describe the points you get to allocate as you level up. As gone over in Final Fantasy XIV - Stats these are the points that are allotted per Class (not Job) up to 30 at Level 50 which allow the player to somewhat customize where they want their added stats placed. The only in which to undo the allocation is through a one time use, expensive item called, Keeper’s Hymn item worth 10,000 Grand Company Seals.
        • Example Sentence: “I really wish AP was separated per Job, now I have to constantly readjust my points if I want to play Scholar and then Summoner!”
  • ARR
    • A Realm Reborn
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “ARR really has come a long way since 1.0, it hardly looks like the same game anymore!”
  • ATK
    • Attack
      • Shorthand
        • Example Sentence: “When Berserk is up I have nearly 700 ATK, I’m going to murder all the things!”
  • ATM
    • At The Moment
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “I’m not doing anything atm, just killing time until dinner.”
  • AV
    • Aurum Vale / Absolute Virtue
      • Acronym, (1) Aurum Vale is a dungeon in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. (2) Refers to an incredibly difficult boss in Final Fantasy XI that is still referenced and talked about, particularly in response to having more difficult encounters.         • Example Sentences: (1) “I have to run AV to rank up in my Grand Company, anybody want to join me?” (2) “Twintania has nothing on AV, Square Enix really should make more difficult bosses that take months to figure out and beat, not something anybody can steam roll!”

  • Bind / Bound
    • Term, used to explain that a character or monster is rooted to the spot, aka “Bound” or that somebody needs to “Bind” a character or monster. Often used in PvP to explain that the player is bound and unable to move until it wears off.
      • Example Sentence: “I got hit by Blizzard II, I’m bound for a few seconds, could you throw an Esuna my way?”
  • Bio
    • Biological / Bio
      • Shorthand, (1) used to explain that the person needs to go use the bathroom or intends to go. (2) A spell in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, no relation to the former.
        • Example Sentences: (1) “Gotta go bio guys, be back in a few minutes!” (2) “Always cast Bio II before Bio due to the longer spell cast and higher potency of Bio II!”
  • BOE
    • Bind On Equip
      • Acronym, used to explain that a piece of equipment will become untradeable and permanently registered to the person who equips the item. In the case of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn this only happens after any form of EXP is earned whilst wearing the item, and not directly after equipment.
        • Example Sentence: “Be careful if you want to sell that piece, it’ll BOE if you put it on!”
  • BOP
    • Bind On Pickup
      • Acronym, used to explain that an item will be permanently bound to a character if they pick it up or it goes into their inventory. In Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn this is represented by a Rare / Exclusive symbol that lets the player know the item cannot be traded or put up on the Market to be sold to another player.
        • Example Sentence: “Make sure you can actually use that Allagan Rope Belt of Casting, it’ll BOP if you win the lot and you can’t get it to anybody else if you decide you don’t want it!”
  • Bot
    • Bot / Botter / Botting
      • Shorthand, used to explain when a person or persons are using programs / third party tools to manipulate their game while they’re not playing. This usually refers to people who are doing something boring that a normal person would never be able to do constantly and so they employ a program to do it for them. This is most often the case in crafters who stay crafting day and night and never do anything else, the same with gatherers and more recently PvPers who just queue up and run straight into the center, sometimes attacking the other team in ways that a player would never be so stupid to do.
        • Example: “Man, we’ve got another botter in PvP, why can’t Square Enix do something about this?!”
  • BRB
    • Be Right Back
      • Shorthand, used to explain that a person will be back shortly, generally BRB is a shorter time frame than AFK which is generally used for times greater than 5 minutes away.
        • Example Sentence: “I gotta brb, the food in the oven just dinged!”
  • BRT
    • Be Right There
      • Shorthand, used to convey that a person is coming quickly to a particular destination.
        • Example Sentence: “I’m just finishing getting my gear from my retainer, I’ll brt!”
  • BTW
    • By The Way
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “BTW, I don’t have access to the Crystal Tower yet!”
  • Buff / Buffing / Buff Up
    • Term, used in the various conjugations and wordings in order to convey the need or the current casting or use of particular buffs. A Buff is any item, spell or ability that boosts one or more character’s abilities, making them stronger, this can also refer to monsters.       • Example Sentences: “Could I please get some buffs, I died and mine wore off.”

C

  • Camp / Camping
    • Term, (1) Used to describe a safe haven where mobs won’t attack and where there are certain amenities such as the Safe Haven bonus in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn that provides rested bonus experience boost based on the time inside a camp. (2) Refers to a location which a group or party will stay in order to hunt mobs or a particular mob in particular.
      • Example Sentence: (1) “I’m going to go to bed as soon as I arrive at Camp Drybone so I can log off and earn my experience bonus!” (2) “We’ll camp around here, the Boss should spawn around here soon, be ready to attack it when it does.”
  • Carebear
    • Term, used to describe a person or persons who don’t like PvP and prefer PvE over it, people who would rather help others by partying up with them to attack a monster rather than hurting a fellow player in a PvP instance or match. See: Final Fantasy XIV - PvP
      • Example Sentence: “Tifa doesn’t play PvP, she’s too much of a carebear, every time I try and get her to come out she doesn’t want to.”
  • Caster
    • Term, used to denote a magical class that attacks from a range with magical spells that they cast, thus the name. See: Final Fantasy XIV - Classes and Final Fantasy XIV - Jobs
      • Example Sentence: “Casters have it so easy, they can stay out of the worst damage while making sure to avoid most of the close up attacks that the melee have to avoid.”
  • CC
    • Crowd Control
      • Acronym, used to denote when crowd control tactics will need to be used. Crowd Control tactics range from a single person or small group of people keeping a variety of mobs (referred to as the “Crowd”) from moving on the rest of the party by either sleeping, binding or keeping them occupied by maintaining hate on them all and kiting or tanking them in a particular way.         • Example Sentence: “The adds will need some good CC to while we focus down the boss.”
  • CE
    • Collector’s Edition
      • Acronym
        • Example Sentence: “I got the CE to Final Fantasy XIV back in 2010, and I’m glad I’ve been playing it this entire time!”
  • Cheese
    • Term, used to denote a cheesy plan or setup that exploits some part of the game (but is not cheating technically) to give an unfair advantage that requires little skill to carry out. A ‘cheeser’ is one such person who does this or prefers to do it for easier wins rather than better themselves or acquire more skill / understanding of the game or particular encounter.
      • Example Sentence: “Look at this cheese team, two SMN and a SCH!”
  • Coil
    • The Binding Coil of Bahamut
      • Shorthand, used in place of the excessively long dungeon, instead of T or Turn which often is specific to that particular section of the dungeon, Coil refers to the whole dungeon. See: Final Fantasy XIV - Raids and Final Fantasy XIV - The Binding Coil of Bahamut
        • Example Sentence: “Coil was pretty rough last night, we have a few disconnects and lag issues that made it hard to dodge a lot of the attacks.”
  • Crafter
    • Term, used to describe a character or class that creates things in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn; any class that belongs to the DOH section of classes. See: Final Fantasy XIV - Crafting and Final Fantasy XIV - Armoury System
      • Example Sentence: “Any crafters online to give me some pointers, I just finished leveling several to 50 and I’m not entirely sure how to set up my rotations to be best.”
  • Crit
    • Critical Hit
      • Shorthand, used to reference scoring or taking a Critical Hit, and also to reference the stat Critical Hit Rate. See: Final Fantasy XIV - Stats
        • Example Sentence: “Oh man, did you see that crit, I nearly broke 2,000 damage!”

    • Cutscene
      • Acronym / Shorthand
        • Example Sentence: “Square Enix really needs to let us automatically skip these CS, I’ve seen them a thousand times before already!”
