DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

Especially for new Devtome writers: your guide to what happens next

You have just received the good news from your signup admin that you now have a Devtome writers account. Here are the next steps you need to take to finalize your admittance into the Devtome writer community.

Warning

There's a scam book saying that you'll get 500$/hour writing for devtome. That's a lie, and obviously no one will pay everyone who signs up 500$/hour. By his own admission the scammer has ripped of over 300 writers, if you bought this book reverse the charges on paypal or your credit card immediately. The information on earn devcoins is available below and other places on the Devtome, and it's free. Also anyone writing ad copy will be deleted and get nothing, any admin can delete a writer and there is no appeal process.

Edit your Devtome profile information

Change your password

It is very important that you change your password so that it is not a password which has been PM'd through the forum system or which your signup admin or anyone else has seen. Please do this as soon as you get the message giving you your username and initial password.

Update your other profile information

Please update all fields to reflect your current information. Your signup admin may have populated some of the fields with generic information such as “Real Name” or “please_change@email.com.” Please make the appropriate changes ASAP.

Set up your invoice page

This is the page which will link you to all your articles and direct the earnings script to pay you for them. Please follow the directions here.

Set up your Devcoin wallet

It has to be a client that lives on your computer as online sites which provide a DVC address do not accept generated coins. You can choose from the wallet clients offered here. Once your wallet is set up, feel free to test your address by visiting the Devcoin Faucet. You should receive a dispense of 5 DVC within a couple hours of making the request. Once you are confident your address and wallet are working well, please add your address to the Tip section of your invoice page.

Join the CoinZen Forum

CoinZen is the new home for the Devcoin community including Devtome writers. Please join this community if you haven't already. There you can find threads for technical support (if you need help getting your wallet to work, for example), updates, and discussion on all things related to Devcoin.

Read through the writer guides

You can find them all on this page which is also hyperlinked from the front page. These guides go into greater detail on each aspect of Devtome writing including how to write a good article, how to create a layout with good eye appeal, and how you get paid for your content. Many frequently asked questions are answered in these guides. If you have a question not covered in any of the guides, please reach out and ask it via the CoinZen forum.

Publish your first thousand words

Receiving a Devtome Writer account is only the first step. At least two Devtome admins will look over your articles to decide if you will be retained as a writer. The next stages of the application process kick in towards the end of the round in which you publish your first article or two totaling a thousand words. Publish your best articles and proofread them for proper spelling and grammar.

To create an article page once you are logged in to the Devtome, first click on any article you see on the Devtome front page. For example, this article titled The first passive faucet. Next, in your browser url window, replace the words which come after http://devtome.com/doku.php?id= with your_article_title (using the underscore key in between words). The url for this article is http://devtome.com/doku.php?id=especially_for_Devtome_writers. Once you have modified the url with your article title, hit the Enter key. You will be told the page does not exist, and be given the option to create the page. Create the page. It will bring you to an edit window where you can begin typing your content, or paste it from another application. Please follow the formatting directions on the syntax page to optimize your article layout.

If the page already exists, that means someone else wrote an article using the title you have in mind, please choose a new title.

When you are done writing and editing your article, click on the save button, and your article is now live on the Devtome.

Reference your article on your invoice page

Once you have published your article, you need to add it to your user page. Under either the original or collated section, add the title of your article using this format:

*[[:Your article title]] - Source: Original (or provide url if article was previously published on another site)

To determine whether your article is an original or collated article, please refer to this must read guide.

Add your article title to the Devtome front page

Click on the front page edit button, then add your article using this syntax:

 *[[:Your article title]]

What happens after I've published my first thousand words?

A few days before the end of the next submission round, your content will be read and evaluated by an article admin and an earnings admin. The article admin makes sure the article meets Devtome criteria. The earnings admin also reviews your article and if everything checks out will recommend your Devcoin address (the one you included on your invoice page) to be added to the earnings list. Depending on when during the round you published your first thousand words, your articles could be evaluated during that same round, but more likely they will be evaluated during the following round, so please be patient. You may continue to publish articles during this time.

Do not ask your signup admin when your articles will be evaluated, when your approval will be finalized or when you will get paid, because your signup admin does not know and is not obligated to answer.

The article admin and the earnings admin may contact you by PM through the Bitcoin Forum or CoinZen, so please be sure to check your messages on both forums. The admins may also leave a message at the top of your invoice page so be on the lookout for that as well.

Your approval as a Devtome writer is official once your address gets added to the earnings list. However, keep in mind that your ongoing work is subject to evaluation at any time. Your status as a Devtome writer could be revoked at any time that your content shows a significant decrease in quality, is found to not meet Devtome standards, or presents other concerns.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of proofreading each and every article for correct spelling and grammar. Writers who publish articles with many such errors will not be added to the earnings list, and may have their articles removed and their writing privileges revoked.

How can I maximize my earnings?

Once you are officially approved as a Devtome writer, you will be paid for your content as long as you reference it on your invoice page. You can track your earnings on the DVC Countdown. Earnings are based on word count, page views, whether or not you've categorized your article, and your ratings as a writer.

The easiest way to ensure maximum earnings is to categorize each and every article you publish. The format for categorizing is:

[[category:category name]]

where the first word “category” needs to be typed out, and the phrase after the colon is the actual category name. For a list of categories to choose from, please refer to the Devtome front page (you have to scroll down to the category section). If your category does not exist, you can create one. Click on any of the categories listed, then in the url bar substitute your category name for the existing category name, hit enter, and opt to create the category. Then add your category to the appropriate place on the front page by editing it. Please reference this article on categorization for more complete directions on how to categorize your articles.

You will need to go through an entire round of payouts before you can benefit from page views or writer ratings. Page views mean that people are reading your articles. An easy way to give your articles a chance to get read is to be sure to add them to the front page of the Devtome. They will stay there for a while until filed by a category admin. You can also share links to your articles with your friends, or post them on forums when appropriate and relevant. Do not spam them.

You will get good ratings as a writer if you write well and proofread for correct spelling and grammar. You can also work to improve your writing skills by reading good writing, joining a writer's group, and lots of practice. Your writing does not need to be perfect, but do take every opportunity to improve your skills.

Although not directly related to writing quality, attractive page layout makes your articles easier and more appealing to read. Be sure to familiarize yourself with how to create headlines and add images and other ways to improve layout by bookmarking and referring to the syntax page. Please also refer to these style guidelines. Feel free to experiment and try new things.

Do not plagiarize

Plagiarism is the number one killer of Devtome writer careers and accounts. Do not do it. Do not try to cleverly mask it. You will get caught. If you're unclear on what plagiarism is, then please educate yourself before you publish anything. You can start with this article titled Do not plagiarize.

When do I get paid?

Devtome earning periods are divided up into rounds lasting 4,000 blocks. The DVC Countdown tells you the current submission round and the current payout round. If you are submitting during round 33, you will be paid when round 33 begins paying out. There is a period of 2,700 blocks between the end of the submission round and the time that round begins paying out. With a block generation interval of ten minutes, that means it will take a bit under three weeks from the end of the submission round to the beginning of that round paying out.

How do I get paid?

Once the submission round is over, the pay script gets run, and a receiver file with all the addresses to be paid is created. This receiver file matches each address to the earnings for a particular block. Devcoin blocks contain 50,000 DVC each. Out of that, 5,000 DVC goes to regular miners and 45,000 goes to Devtome writers, admins and other Devcoin community developers. When a block with your address is opened, your wallet receives 45,000 DVC. The number of times you get paid 45,000 DVC depends on the number of shares you get paid and the total number of shares in the round. Let's say the round is paying out a total of 1,000 shares and you earn 20 of those shares. The list of addresses in the receiver file will cycle four times (4,000 divided by 1,000). You will get paid 45,000 DVC twenty times each cycle, or a total of 80 times in the round.

Once the generated Devcoins hit your wallet, it will take 120 blocks for them to mature. Once they mature, your wallet will add them to your balance and you are free to send them to other addresses as you wish.

How can I keep the earnings coming?

Once you start getting paid for your Devtome content, if you keep publishing content consistently, you will continue to get paid with no interruption. Once the submission deadline for one round closes, your content will automatically get added to the next round's submissions. While it may take up to seven weeks for you to get paid for the very first article you published, once the payments kick in for you they will keep going, and going, and going as long as you keep writing and the content you publish maintains Devtome quality standards. Please read the writer's guide Your Devtome writing success to get more detailed information on how to be a successful Devtome writer for the long haul.

How can I further help with the Devtome?

It actually takes a surprising amount of manpower to keep the Devtome project humming along smoothly. From signup admins to article and earnings admins, to category admins and writer raters, there is plenty of behind the scenes work to do, and it all gets compensated through administrator shares and bounties. Once you have contributed high quality content for a couple rounds, you will be invited to become a Devtome admin. If you would rather not wait that long, you can send a PM to Unthinkingbit on CoinZen and offer your services. Just be sure you have a good grasp on how to publish and invoice your articles before taking on additional admin responsibilities.

Final thoughts

This article was written to provide a guide to help the brand new Devtome writer know what to expect in the initial weeks following initial approval and account creation. I hope you have found it helpful and that it has answered many of your initial questions. I wish you great success as a Devtome writer and look forward to interacting with you on the CoinZen boards.
