DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

Dying Light - A 'Roaming' Review/Informational

dyinglight.jpg Dying light is a open world survival horror game created by Techland, who are well known for their popular series Dead Island. The game was based on the idea of combing the elements similar to Mirrors Edge and an open world zombie survival game, ultimately leading to multiple adrenaline fuelled, parkour chase sequences throughout the game. The game has very similar gameplay elements shared from Dead Island, including its stamina system, randomized weapon properties, crafting system and skills system.

Plot

Kyle Crane is a GRE operative sent into ground zero of the Viral Outbreak, the city of Harran to find rogue GRE agent Kadir Suleiman who has stolen files in order to blackmail them. He is inducted into a makeshift survivor sanctuary, the 'Tower' after a unfortunate landing and is taught Parkour by Rahim Aldemir. It is soon known that the entire town is harassed by a bandit faction lead by Rais, who's later figured out to the be target Crane has been looking for. Crane decided to go rogue after he realises that the GRE doesn't care for the survivors inside the city when they stopped the air supply drops. He later meets a scientists named Dr. Imran Zere who has been researching on a cure for the virus with his colleague Dr. Camden. After retrieving the flesh from a viral test subject, it's discovered that they have made progress into finding the cure. Later, Dr. Zere is captured by the bandits and Crane discovers that the files are actually plans to weapon the virus instead of curing it. Zere is later killed and Crane must deliver the cure samples to Dr. Camden in Old Town.

It turns out that the GRE has received negative impact from public views and have been taken over by the Defense Ministry, who plans to bomb the city in order to eradicate the outbreak, attempting to persuade the public that there are no survivors left in the city. Jade Aldemir, after shortly learning of her brother's death, decides to deliver the samples to Dr. Camden solo. After Jade was captured by Rais, it's discovered that she was infected and was put out of her misery by Crane in an attempt to fight for one bottle of Antizen.

Gameplay

Once again, Dying Light's main focus was to combine the sport of free running along with zombie survival, a wonderful concept really because zombies simply cannot parkour! To my avail, this game actually took off smoothly. The game incorporated smooth free running/parkour mechanics, proper difficulty ramping, excellent story and full of carefully hidden backstory along with very fluid gameplay in general.

Freerunning

Needless to say, the freerunning/parkour in the game should've brought some elements from Mirror's Edge since it's often mentioned since the game's debut. However, the game manages to be unique in that way, instead of being able to fall down countless metres only only to survive as long as you could 'roll' in time, the player is forced to find 'soft' spots to land on (the roof of a car, garbage piles, etc). Although, it might be tricky to find some ledges or platforms to hang onto, that's the trick with parkour. It's being able to actively spot out the most efficient way to get from point A to point B. Although, in this game, the word 'efficient' is actually just a one way path that you have to take. Still, being able to free run in an open world game is phenomenal and should be commended for taking off such a great concept with colorful success.

Combat System

As previously stated, the Combat System is very similar to Dead Island since they're both the same developers. Stamina is a primary function when using a melee weapon. Unlike other games, you cannot continuously swing your melee weapon since after a short while, the player becomes fatigued. This is easily fixed by waiting a little after your stamina runs out or is low. There are also locational damage. Depending on the are you hit, varies the damage (the head is most critical). On top of that, the player can craft weapons/items to set zombies on fire, freeze them or even poison them.

Skills System

The skills system is actually made up of three skill trees, Survivor, Agility and Power. The Survivor skill tree includes skills that will keep the player alive and assist them during a dilemmma. Such skills include camoflauge, where the player can use the blood and smell from a corpse to blend in with other zombies. Multiple skills allows the players to also craft new items, and elemental weapons.

Agility primarily focuses on freerunning perks. Such skills allows the player to gain more running stamina, regenerate health while freerunning, use a grappling hook and assist in dodging enemies.

Power focuses on damage dealt by the player. Skills include stunning enemies, being able to dish out more damage in a single attack, increasing their combat stamina and to be able to use less durability in weapons.

Good Night, and Good Luck

'Good Night, and Good Luck' is actually motto of this game. Zombies are actually more passive during the day, meanwhile zombies during the night can turn 'viral', and become extremely hard to deal with. Often times, the player would get to a safe house and sleep until the day since running away from Virals is recommended. However, there is a doubled experience points boost for anything you do in the night.

Multiplayer

Players can play in co-operative in order to complete quests with other players to progress through the storyline, but one player can become a Viral 'hunter' to hunt down the survivors. There is a entire skill tree set just for the Hunter, and is equipped with very advantages mechanics like being able to grapple towards any surface without recharge, instantly killing a survivor by pouncing onto them and to see survivors through walls. Although, I personally think the game is fine off being singleplayer.

Problems with the game

The biggest problem I have with the game is the time. In Dead Rising 2, the player has 72 hours (in-game time, not real life) to complete all of the main missions and prove that they're innocent in who caused the virus outbreak. The time limits that the storyline shows are how often you need Antizen and the fact that the player only has 48 hours to push back the Ministry bombing. No where in the game tells the player that they actually have a time limit, so that if they player chooses to do a mission other than the main questline, that's perfectly okay. I understand that proving a time limit in the game would be even harder due to Day and Night transitions, but shouldn't the storyline be true to the gameplay?

The E3 2013 Trailer depicts Kyle Crane rushing to an air drop, showing off his freerunning skills. The problem is that it gives us the notion that air drops will be an essential thing to find in game due to it having Antizen. However, air drops are only ever there for crafting supplies and packages for experience points, not a priority really (but some beginning quests requires you to retrieve air drops). It also shows Kyle Crane being bashed on the head with a baseball bat, after reaching the air drop by another survivor looking for the drop himself.
