DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. Devtome - When Speed is What You Need

One thing I’ve noticed with Devtome so far, the way it is set up currently, pretty scholarly articles with proper citations take so long that it isn’t economical. The amount of devcoin which can be earned from a scholarly article is much less compared to a quick editorial. It would seem that, if the objective is to earn as much devcoin as possible, editorials and perhaps stories, if one is a fluent fiction writer, is the way to go if one wishes to make some money.

Speed

I experimented with poetry for a while but found that it took me about an hour to do five hundred words which is about the same it took for less than perfect essay. The quickest things I’ve found I can write are opinion pieces or essays which I already have formed in my mind based on life experiences and in-depth study. Since we aren’t trying to be another Wikipedia, this may be for the best.

Quality

With Devtome quality does matter but so does speed. When we talk about quality, we are referring to things like grammar and other writing errors which can affect review scoring but we are also referring to popularity as well. Popularity is about writing things that people want to read; not necessarily scrubbed and polished scholarly articles.

I do not understand the way the earnings multiplier is calculated, to be honest. I will go to the dvc countdown clock by blistering developers sometimes. When I look through the stats at all of the numbers it turns my head around a bit. This is no shame I suppose: I’m a writer not a mathematician. For this reason I am grateful and a bit awed by computer programmers who can seem to think in mathematical terms fluently.

Regardless, it seems to me that the earning’s multiplier is calculated based on both scoring by review and number of people reading the user’s work. There are not, so far as I have found, any bonuses for writing a piece with scholarly acumen and college writing 101 techniques. If you want to earn the maximum amount of coins in the shortest amount of time, spending a week on one article will probably not cut it.

More Speed

You may have to spend quite some time experimenting with different sorts of writing projects and practicing typing skills to increase your productivity. You may find that an essay is quicker than a poem or a scholarly article but not as fast as an editorial or story. You may find that raw effort alone is enough to add a couple more words a minute to your writing projects.

It took me months to figure out about how fast I write including time spent referencing and researching. During much of that time, I had been unable to increase my speed on most articles. I noticed, however, that if I picked a topic I already had a lot to say about and little information to site or link to, I would be able to produce twice as many words in the same amount of time and my work seemed just as popular and/or controversial. Controversy is great, by the way, so long as you stick to the devtome rules. There is no such thing as bad publicity. If someone dislikes something you said so intently they feel the need to talk about it on online forums and chats, they must have read it. They may even read your next work with the intent to bash but still they will have read it..

After several weeks, I have finally increased my efficiency, if not my productivity. If I keep improving it will be practical to make money with Devtome without interfering with full-time traditional employment. A little more speed can mean a lot more devcoin.

More Quality

Speed is what you need; that and proofreading. I have found that I can get docked for being repetitive and for “writing errors,” but I’m not sure exactly what “writing errors” means exactly; probably something dumb I did with punctuation or grammar. If you are quick but take the time to proofread, you should be able to minimize time and energy spent while maximizing earnings.

Quality Popularity

In regard to “quality,” perhaps the most significant aspect is popularity. The more people read your work; the more you get paid. There is a cap on how much you can multiply your earnings through popularity but it can be difficult to maximize that. You would probably have to be the most popular writer on Devtome to get the full multiplier. Even a little bit of a multiplier can make a big difference, however.

Headline Titles

One way I try to increase my popularity is with catchy titles or “headlines” as I think of them. When they are posted on the start page when new there is a sort of “extra extra read all about it” quality to the titles. With other articles stacked on top and buried beneath your article, an attention-grabbing headline is a must.

Self-Promotion

Another way to attempt to increase your popularity is through self-promotion. Naturally, you will want to tell your friends and family about your work but how many of them will read it? Hopefully one or two out of dozens of your closest associates will; friends and family can be the hardest people to sell to.

When self-promoting, it is important to try to extend your reach far outside of your normal social circles for best results. Social media can help networking efforts but last I checked Facebook still does not allow the posting of devtome url’s on its website. Using Facebook to promote is helpful but requires a bit more effort due to the inability to post links directly. In other words, social networking works but may require a bit of creativity.

Promotional Emails

Email can be a great way to get work to your friends and family but you may even be able to solicit email addresses to people you meet on a daily basis as well. One must only make sure the potential reader understand that you intend to use their email for the purposes of sending them a link to your work and Devtome in general. You may even try to set up some sort of weekly email that links to the best of your most recent content. For your reader, it can be like getting a “book of the month” or “cd of the month” with one of those clubs except that it is weekly and free of additional cost to your reader.

Personal Website

If you have your own website, not only can you promote your own work, and Devtome in general, you can also post banners to get marketing revenue through Devtome. Another fun thing might be to promote the sale of devcoin but let’s make sure we are honest with people that it is a purely speculative commodity at this stage. For more on marketing and advertising income, please check the writing guides.

Show Me the Devcoin

Once again admitting that I am not a mathematical genius, it seems to me that if the ambitions of the devcoin and Devtome projects are to be realized, devcoin will have to be better capitalized. As best as I can figure, the main selling points are:

1. They work the same as the majority of coins out there including bitcoin.

2. Arbitrage trading works just as well with devcoin as any other.

3. No hard cap may mean greater longevity for the currency. Bitcoin will likely become untenably scarce at some point.

4. Devcoin is the “ethical” currency which, presumably, means that it is the currency which actually had some objectives in mind, such as promoting open source, other than just bored programmers and greed.

5. The coins are quite affordable. You can buy thousands, even millions, of them for cheap.

6. Plenty of room for growth: though affordable now, they could become comparatively more valuable in the future.

7. The fact that devcoin is integrated with Devtome could mean that devcoin has an advantage in marketing long term due to a large number of writers with a vested interest.

8. Purchasing Devtome helps support open-source writers.

9. Capitalization creates more opportunities for bounties which can bring more interest to devcoin with fascinating new side projects.

10. Eventually, we could have an open-source spaceship if people purchase enough devcoin!

Read Other Users

Taking the time to read through some of the other contributors’ works can be quite enriching. If you find that someone else is putting out some great work don’t hesitant to promote their work as well. The more attention paid to Devtome the better, it would seem.

Reflecting

Looking back on this brief article there are a few main points that can be summarized. Speed, popularity, and grammar all matter a great deal and there are strategies which can be used to improve them. Promoting your own works outside Devtome, friend, and family circles is a must. Promoting devcoin is probably a good idea so long as we are honest about it.
