DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

DayZ Mod

Introduction

The DayZ mod for ArmA 2 is an award-winning open-world survival horror game created by independent developer Dean Hall for the 2009 shooter ArmA 2. DayZ went viral in April 2012 and gained almost instant popularity among the PC gaming community. Development progressed steadily and fast for the next few months. Eventually the developers hit a block with what could be done to the title in mod form and decided to take the game to a standalone version.

Gameplay

DayZ is based around surviving. The developer, Dean Hall (also known as Rocket), aimed to make DayZ as difficult and unforgiving as possible, making the primary objective to survive in a wasteland populated by zombies and other players that could either be murderous bandits or helpful survivors. ArmA 2 is a realistic military simulation more than it is a game, and these effects carry over to the DayZ mod, making the game very realistic and intense.

In order to survive, the player needs to collect gear that spawns in different locations with different rarities. For example, the character in game has hunger, thirst, blood, and temperature values. After a varied amount of time, the player will need to eat and drink to avoid using blood. When the character's blood reaches zero, the player dies. If the character's temperature becomes too low, the character runs the risk of catching a cold, an ailment that causes the players aim to suffer as well as loose a certain amount of blood. The condition can only be cured with antibiotics, which are only found rarely at hospitals. If the player is shot, hit by a zombie, or hurt in another way, he can start bleeding. While bleeding, the player looses blood at a varied amount depending on the injury. In order to stop the bleeding, the player needs to find cover where he can use a bandage to bandage his wounds. Blood can be earned back in one of two ways: a blood transfusion or through eating food. A blood transfusion can only be given to a player by another player and the player needs a blood bag, which can only be found at hospitals. All types of food have different amounts of blood that they will give the player. If the player is injured, his aim will become very shaky until he takes painkillers which can be found commonly in residential and medical areas. Players can also get broken bones from getting shot in the leg or from being hit by a zombie. This condition causes the player to only be able to crawl, and can only be treated by taking morphine, which can be found commonly at medical and military spawn locations.

With his mundane needs taken care of, the player also needs a way to defend himself from zombies and other players. This can be in the form guns, a hatchet, or a crowbar. Hatchets and crowbars can be found commonly in farm and residential areas. Guns have different classifications that include civilian pistols, civilian rifles, military pistols, military rifles, and military sniper rifles. Civilian pistols can be found pretty commonly in civilian areas. Civilian rifles can be found very rarely in civilian areas and semi-commonly in farm areas. Military pistols can be found commonly in low-value military loot locations as well as high value military loot locations. Military rifles can be found rarely at high value military loot locations and commonly at helicopter crashes which spawn randomly on the map. Sniper rifles can be found even less commonly at high value military loot locations but commonly at helicopter crashes as well.

Players spawn on the southern part of the map which is littered with civilian loot locations and is dangerous territory because bandits often roam looking for newly spawned characters to kill. There are very few military loot locations and no high-value military loot locations. In order to find military loot, the player needs to head to the northern part of the map, which contains high-value military loot locations in which the player can find very valuable military weaponry and ammunition.

The reason the DayZ mod became so popular is because of the extreme suspense and tension this environment created. Dying has a very powerful meaning: your character is deleted and you lose all your gear. That can mean days, weeks, or even months of time collecting loot can be lost in just a minute or less. This situation creates such tense situations that players often find their hearts beating as fast as if they were going through a similar situation in real life. This rush is what keeps players coming back for more.
