New Deputy General Manager joins Del Monte

The Del Monte family welcomes Lionard Berba who has been appointed, as Deputy General Manager of Del Monte Philippines. He succeeds Assistant General Manager Henry Lau. He reports to Lois Alejandro.

In his new post, Mr. Berba spearheads our corporate efforts to streamline our strategic plan and implement key action plans vital to realizing our 2 x 5 vision. His expertise will also be most valuable in achieving technical and executional support to expand international markets for Del Monte's expanding product line.

Our new Deputy Gen. Manager has over 20 years of experience in managing various phases of manufacturing operations and supply chain management as well as in strategic planning and change management. He had held key posts during his work stints at Unilever Philippines, SGV Consulting, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Inc., United Laboratories, Inc. , Jollibee Foods Corp. and Johnson & Johnson (Pennsylvania). He received the prestigious Thomas Murrin Award for Manufacturing Excellence from the Carnegie Mellon University (Pennsylvania) where he completed his MBA.

Agriculture Secretary tours Plantation livestock farm

Philippine Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap visits the facilities at Del Monte's livestock operations inside the company's plantation in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.

Del Monte is working with the Dept. of Agriculture to bring the company's beef and other meat products to Bagsakan Centers in Metro Manila. The government-managed centers market quality meat products at affordable prices to Metro Manila residents. With Sec. Yap during his livestock tour, former DMPI Livestock Consultant Dr. Nonoy Albarece, Plantation Operations Group Head Bunnie Jaranilla, DMPI Asst. Gen. Manager Henry Lao, DMPI General Produce Sr. Manager Bobby Villanoy and DMPI Livestock Operations Supervisor Dr. Jay Escandor and Dept of Agriculture Undersecretary Emmanuel Paras.

Cannery renews focus on fruit recovery

Supervisors, capatazes and key personnel at Cannery Preparation led by Mgr. Dodong PadIa and Sr. Mgr. Allan Salcedo focus on recovering more fruit and juice products from every ton of pineapple delivered to the cannery.

They attended their Pine 101 Tutok (Focus) recovery workshop where they revisited recovery performance in past months and drew up strategies to raise recovery levels for slice, beverage and mixed fruit products. Participants were given pointers on how to maximize production of each fruit. Cannery Group Head Raul Leonen, who spearheads the cannery campaign to get more from each fruit, led the team in recognizing the value of teamwork in all production teams and partners at the plantation for improvements attained in the past month.

The Pine 101 lecture series, conducted by Bugo HR, Cannery Operations and Corporate Quality Assurance, updates and refreshes Cannery workers on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), operational SOP's and corporate policies.

Plantation Labor-Management Council is Outstanding LMC

The Del Monte Plantation LMC has been named one of three “Outstanding LMCs (Labor-Management Council) of the Philippines“.

The LMC national award was received by a team of Del Monte management and labor leaders during the National Convention of the Philippine League of LMC Practitioners, Inc. (Philamcop) in Iloilo City.

Leading the team were DMPI Corp. HR Group Head David Escarda, union presidents Virgilio Cabardo (Associated Labor Unions-Local 302) and Arthur Angus (Plantation Monthly-Salaried Employees Union), DMPI Labor Relations Sr. Manager Ramon Velez, Plantation Planning Services Sr. Manager Luis Caballero, Personnel Manager Rudy Macatol and other company and union officials.

The other two awardees are Energizer Philippines, Inc. of Cebu and Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation of Iligan City. Four other leading companies in the country were among the finalists.

The Plantation LMC was cited for opening communication lines between management and its workers, and for outstanding efforts to improve working conditions, enhance employee benefits, improve family life, and initiate outreach projects for host communities. Among its key accomplishments are improved work gear and facilities, values education, all-year-round sports and cultural program for families, and implementation of home-based waste management and environment conservation programs.

The Plantation LMC is the second LMC team of the company to win the prestigious award. The Cannery LMC received the award in the past.

The annual search for Outstanding LMC's is organized by the Philamcop in coordination with Department of Labor and Employment and the National Conciliation and Mediation Board. The award honors management and labor teams whose joint efforts have helped foster industrial peace and raise worker productivity. The award also recognizes members of the private sector who have raised the competitiveness of Philippine products and services in the global market.

Del Monte enters SSS Hall of Fame

The Social Security System honored Del Monte Philippines with its highest accolade - the Hall of Fame Award - for winning the SSS Kabalikat Ng Bayan Top Employer Award.

Del Monte, also “SSS Top Employer of the Year for Mindanao”, was cited for exemplary compliance with SSS-mandated welfare programs for workers in the country's private sector, and for active participation in SSS programs. The company extends the full range of benefits, including worker coverage, contributions remittance, advance payment of sickness, maternity and employee compensation benefits, to some 5,000 workers.

Noli de Castro handed the award to DMPI Corporate Human Resource Group Head David Escarda during SSS' anniversary celebration held in Quezon City. With Noli de Castro during the rites were Social Security System President and CEO Corazon dela Paz and SSS Chairman Thelma Cunanan.

In partnership with SSS, Del Monte has also pioneered the country's first documentation assistance program that assures workers of maximum SSS retirement benefits. Since 2002, the company has helped over 5,000 plantation, cannery and office workers authenticate and submit retirement documents to SSS. The program has benefited retirees receiving monthly pension since 1985 and workers due to retire. A thorough review done by SSS on submitted documents has resulted in 18 to 22 percent increase in monthly retirement pension. Company retirees now receive their first monthly pension within 15 days of retirement date, three or four months earlier than most private sector retirees.

Del Monte Philippines, one of the country's leading pineapple growers and food manufacturers, has been an SSS employer-member since 1957.

We grew our strength by setting new records, breaking new grounds and injecting fresh talents into our organization. We brought our company so much closer to our goal of doubling our business by the end of the decade. Major developments this year redefined our power and our goals as well. They also demonstrated NutriAsia's faith and confidence in the company's ability to deliver on its promise to grow the business.

The NutriAsia Group became the majority shareholder of DMPL, making a big difference in the consistency of our strategies and the speed by which we develop the organization as well as execute our initiatives in the marketplace. DMPL acquired a 40 percent stake in Field Fresh Foods Pvt Limited, a leading fruit and vegetable producer in India. This will not only bring about an exchange of valuable farming technology but will build another leg to our growth platform as we expand the Del Monte brand in the huge, fast-growing India and the Subcontinent markets, where someday our success could rival that in the Philippines. And finally in November, we acquired the trademark rights for the S&W brand for the entire world except the Americas and Australia/New Zealand. The S&W brand has been around for more than a century; and like the Del Monte brand, it is an established and well respected household icon.

Beyond the business, we have also given a new dimension to our community outreach program by awarding educational scholarships to children of our employees at the plantation and cannery. We have always believed that the spirit of charity that our company nurtures in the communities around us will grow even stronger when charity begins at home.

We owe to you every success we attained. You have made possible all the breakthroughs that made a better year for our company, and paved the way for what I believe shall be another record-breaking performance in the years ahead.
