Cause

Antibiotics kill all bacteria, harmful and beneficial. When the beneficial bacteria in the gut are killed, the way is open for candida to move in and dominate the small intestine.

Candida feeds on sugar, including sugar itself, foods containing sugar and foods that convert to sugar. Also a diet rich in sugar depresses the immune system, leaving the body vulnerable to candida.

Both chlorine and fluoride kill beneficial bacteria in the gut, opening the way for candida. Chlorine is added to most water supplies as a disinfectant. Fluorine is added to some water supplies, because industry wants to get paid for toxic fluoride, rather than paying for its safe disposal.

Toxic metals like lead, cadmium, and especially mercury, lead to candida. Mercury kills bacteria in the gut and weakens the immune system, making it easier for candida to proliferate. People get mercury from many sources including dental filings, thimerosal in vaccines, and industrial pollution.

Worm and parasites can infect the body, disturbing the gut ecology and allowing candida to grow. Parasites can spread through contaminated water supplies, pets, and poorly cooked foods like sushi, ceviche, steak tartar and medium rare burgers.

Diabetes increases the risk of getting candida, because of the elevated blood sugar level which feeds candida. Diabetic women are particularly susceptible to yeast infections.

One of the body's first reactions to a stressful situation is to release cortisol, a hormone that depresses the immune system and raises the blood sugar level. The yeast feeds on the extra sugar, with the weakened immune system unable to stop it. Also, prolonged stress weakens the adrenal glands, which are an important part of the immune system. With a weaker immune system, the candida proliferates.

The contraceptive pill can imbalance the intestinal flora, which can make it easier for candida to grow. Also, the estrogen in the pill promotes the growth of yeast.

The copper IUD can increase yeast growth, when there is insufficient zinc in the body.

In modern agriculture, the soil is fertilized mostly with nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. After several harvests, the soil becomes deficient in every other element. So the crops become deficient in other elements, and people in turn become deficient in necessary minerals to prevent candida, like boron, sulfur, copper, zinc, and iodine.

Treatment

Sugar feeds candida, so sugar intake must be minimized. Smoking weakens the immune system, so smoking must be stopped also. A good sugar substitute for candida sufferers is xylitol, because it is safe and reduces the adhesion of candida. It is difficult to eat less sugar, and even harder to stop smoking, but it must be done to treat candida and to be healthier in general.

The primary candida treatment is to cleanse the colon, to remove biofilms and deposits where candida grows, and to make it easier for the colon to absorb nutrients. The colon can be cleased with abrasives, and with chemicals which break up deposits. It's good to use both methods, because some types of films and deposits can only be removed with abrasives, and some types are better broken up with chemicals. Popular abrasives are diatomaceous earth, and psyllium, in the caproyl, psyllium and bentonite mixture. Popular chemicals to break up films and deposits are cayenne pepper, proteolytic enzymes, bromelain, and wheatgrass juice.

Probiotics must be taken to reseed the gut flora with beneficial microorganisms. The most plentiful probiotics are from live foods, such as kefir, viili yogurt, regular yogurt, sauerkraut, and yakult. Powdered probiotics are somewhat useful, but they do not have nearly as many microorganisms as typical live foods, partly because the serving size is much smaller than a typical food serving size, and also because some of the microorganisms die while the powders are sitting on the shelf.

Antifungals include coconut oil, iodine, rutabaga, olive leaf, curcumin/turmeric, boron, garlic, oregano oil, grapefruit seed extract (GSE), copper, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), aloe vera, rife, and caproyl, in the caproyl, psyllium and bentonite mixture. Because taking an antifungal for the first time sometimes produces a detox reaction, it is best to start with a quarter of the full dose, also have some vitamin C, molybdenum, and milk thistle on hand to minimize the die off reaction if necessary.

Immune system boosters include astragalus, zinc, and vitamin B.

Oxygenators include magnesium, and chlorophyll.

Meditation and deep breathing help with candida. Meditation mainly by reducing stress, and deep breathing mainly by oxygenating the blood.

Chelation is needed to remove toxic metals like mercury, lead and cadmium.

A common candida symptom, oral thrush, usually can only be permanently cured by healing the whole body, but that can take many months, and a topical antiseptic can bring relief in the meantime. A fast acting topical antiseptic is glycerin, which is applied by a tooth brush to the affected areas. However, a tooth brush can not reach all areas, like the very back of the tongue, so additionally a solution like baking soda and water, or salt and water can be gargled to reach all areas of the mouth. Many methods to treat oral thrush are described on the Cure a White Coating on the Tongue page.

Candida is a stubborn infection, and can be difficult to treat. A mild case may be treatable by for example reducing sugar consumption, taking cayenne pepper, and eating more yogurt, rutabega, and garlic. On the other hand, a severe case may require most of the rated treatments below, some of the unrated treatments, and many months, even a few years. However, it is worth taking the treatments, and the colon cleansers, probiotics, minerals, immune system boosters, oxygenators, along with meditation, deep breathing, and chelation improve health overall.

For each treatment below, the effectiveness is rated on a scale of 0 to 10. The effectiveness rating is a combination of the claimed power of the treatment with the amount of evidence for that claim. The availability is rated on a scale of 0 to 5. The easier the treatment is to obtain, the higher the availability rating, the more expensive the treatment, the lower the availability rating. If the treatment is a common food the availability rating will be 5, if the treatment can only be obtained by mail order, the rating will be lower, if the treatment is only available by prescription the rating lower still. The safety is rated on a scale of 0 to 5. If the treatment is a common safe food the safety rating will be 5, if the treatment has mild adverse effects the rating will be lower, if the treatment requires injections or monitoring in a clinic to prevent the possibility of severe adverse effects the rating will be lower still.

The scores are totaled, and the treatments are ranked in descending order of the total score, then alphabetically.

Caproyl, Psyllium and Bentonite

The combination of caproyl, psyllium and bentonite is very effective in treating candida. The typical dose is 180 ml water, 60 ml unsweetened juice, two teaspoons of caproyl, one well rounded teaspoon of psyllium husks and/or seeds, and one tablespoon of bentonite, all shaken vigorously in a jar for fifteen seconds and then taken immediately. This should be done on an empty stomach, once during the day to start and maybe twice a day if the candida problem is severe. Also, at least six glasses of liquid daily should be taken to keep the psyllium gel moving through the gut. Often, to boost the intestinal flora, a probiotic is added to the mixture.

The mixture of the caproyl, psyllium and bentonite forms a sustained release gel delivery system. The combination is very effective because the gel coats the entire colon wall with caproyl, where it kills candida. Whereas when caproyl is used alone, most ends up in the liver, damaging the liver instead of killing candida. The bentonite in the mixture absorbs the chemicals released by dying candida, minimizing the die off reaction. Probiotics that are often added to the mix include DDS Acidophilus and Ultra Flora IB.

Caproyl is a mixture of liquid caprylic acid in concentrations of at least 2,800 mg/oz and oleic acid. Oleic acid is found naturally in olive oil, and in even higher amounts in safflower oil. Psyllium husk powder is a concentrated form of psyllium husks. In the caproyl, psyllium and bentonite mixture, if powder is substituted for whole psyllium, one teaspoon of powder should be used instead of one well rounded teaspoon of whole psyllium.

The components of this mixture can be bought separately, but kits are more convenient. Kits include Yeast Buster - Yeast Buster Kit, and Wise Essentials - Candida Purge Kit. Also there are several kits with different probiotic options listed on the NotDoctors.com - Colon Cleanse page.

Psyllium is usually safe, however some people have severe allergies to it. A health care provider should be consulted if you've had intestinal or bowel surgery. Prescription drugs should be taken one hour before or three hours after psyllium, because the absorption and effectiveness of many drugs will be reduced. Psyllium must always be taken with at least a full 250 ml glass of water, also it is necessary to drink at least six glasses of water throughout the day or constipation may develop. Taking psyllium supplements without adequate liquids may cause it to swell, and, in extreme cases, cause choking. People who have difficulty swallowing or esophageal stricture (narrowing of the esophagus) or any other narrowing or obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract should not take psyllium. Bentonite also reduces the absorption and effectiveness of many drugs, so prescription drugs should be taken one hour before or three hours after bentonite.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a moderately powerful antifungal, it can be applied topically, and it can replace other cooking oils. The coconut oil must be unhydrogenated and free of trans fats, because hydrogenated oil is harmful. The best coconut oil is cold pressed organic virgin coconut oil (VCO), because virgin coconut oil is extracted from fresh coconut flesh and retains more nutrients than regular coconut oil which is derived from the dried fruit. You can also get the full power of coconut oil by using homemade raw coconut cream or milk, or by pressing coconut pieces through a low speed juicer. The typical treatment dose is about three tablespoons of coconut oil daily. Because taking coconut oil for the first time sometimes produces a detox reaction, it is best to start with a tablespoon per day, and increase the dose to three tablespoons a day over a week.

The medium-chain saturated fatty acids (MCFA) in coconut oil are potent antimicrobial agents, effective against fungi, viruses and many bacteria. The most effective fatty acids are caprylic acid (with 8 carbon atoms), capric acid (10 carbon atoms) and lauric acid (12 carbon). The structure of these fatty acids allows them to attack the integrity of the membrane of candida yeast, disrupting and disintegrating it, which leaves the cytoplasm disorganized and shrunken.

Coconut oil is also effective topically, it moisturizes skin and kills fungal infections. Massaging coconut oil into the scalp nourishes the scalp and can relieve dandruff, which is often caused by fungal infections like candida. For deep hair conditioning, use a teaspoon or two on damp hair and leave it in as long as possible. A few hours is helpful; and overnight, or even a few days, is better. The deep conditioning can be done as often as once a week and it may be necessary to wash the hair a couple times to remove it all. However coconut oil can stain fabric, so be sure to protect clothes and bedding.

When taking coconut oil the first time, start with no more than a tablespoon per day, also have some vitamin C and molybdenum on hand to minimize the die off reaction if necessary. Coconut oil generally increases basic metabolic functions in the body; when applied topically the skin will produce more oil which can sometimes lead to skin problems, especially if the skin is not cleaned right before applying the oil.

Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth (DE) cleans the colon, leaving fewer places for candida to grow. The diatomaceous earth must be Food Grade, not filter grade sometimes called pool grade. The typical dose is one heaping tablespoon a day in water or juice, away from food, usually the first thing in the morning. It should be stirred frequently to keep it in suspension, otherwise much of it will settle at the bottom of the glass. It can take a while to get used to drinking earth, so people often start with a teaspoon and increase the dose over several days.

Diatoms are single-celled marine microorganisms, when these organisms die their skeletal remains settle to the bottom, become fossilized over time and accumulate to produce diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth consists of around 85% amorphous silica and about twenty trace minerals. The fossilized diatom exoskeletons have sharp points which scrub intestinal walls and cut up parasites present in the digestive tract. Additionally, as they pass the digestive tract, they attract and absorb bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi, pesticides, heavy metals, and drug residues. Regular intake of diatomaceous earth has many additional health benefits, including healthier hair, skin, teeth, lungs, bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, nails, blood vessels and gums. Regular intake also lowers blood pressure and bad cholesterol, reduces inflammation, and removes aluminium. Overall, because diatomaceous earth treats so many conditions, it is one of the best health products.

The diatomaceous earth must be food grade guaranteed to have less than 0.5% crystalline silica, not filter grade sometimes called pool grade. Food grade diatomaceous earth products include Earthworks Health - Diatomaceous Earth 4 - 2.5 lb. Gallon Jugs, More Than Alive - Bulk Herbs: Diatomaceous Earth - Food Grade Powder - 50 lb, and GardenHarvestSupply.com - Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade - 5 lb bag. Food grade diatomaceous earth can be also found at some pet food stores.

Diatomaceous earth must be food grade guaranteed to have less than 0.5% crystalline silica, not filter grade sometimes called pool grade, because filter grade diatomaceous earth destroys the digestive system and because breathing in dust from filter grade diatomaceous earth causes silicosis. Because there is a tiny amount of crystalline silica dust even in food grade diatomaceous earth, you must be careful not to breathe in dust from diatomaceous earth. To be really safe, you can pour water into the container of diatomaceous earth, to turn the powder to mud; once it is a mud, there is no dust, so no risk of silicosis. Then use that mud as you would use the powder, putting it into water or juice, and stirring it vigorously to mix it into the liquid. Because it starts out as a mud, rather than a powder, it takes more stirring to mix it into the liquid, however, the safety is worth the extra work.

Iodine

Iodine is an antiseptic, and a chelator. The typical Japanese consumption, which has a high intake of iodine from seaweed, is 2 mg/day. The supplementation should ideally be from food.

Iodine kills microorganisms and parasites, calms the body, increases energy, increases focus and concentration, helps to produce stomach acid, and increases the ability to sweat. Iodine also helps the body excrete toxic elements like mercury, lead, cadmium, aluminum, fluorine, and bromine, and toxic compounds like perchlorates. Iodine deficiency symptoms include hypothyroidism, brain fog, hormonal imbalances, hoarseness, poor short term memory, immune system dysfunction, acid reflux, chronic constipation, cold intolerance, excess phlegm, hypertension, heart arrythmias, fatigue, chronic headaches, weight gain, fibrocystic breasts, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), infertility, menstrual cramps, vaginal infections, and dry skin, mouth and eyes.

Seaweed is the food richest in iodine. Kelp are large seaweeds belonging to the brown algae (class Phaeophyceae). The concentration of iodine in kelp varies widely, Undaria kelp has 0.049 mg/g, and Green Bay kelp has 2.2 mg/g, and some kelp flakes have as much as 8 mg/g. Japanese kombu (Laminaria) has 2.4 mg/g, wakame (Undaria) has 0.042 mg/g, and nori has 0.016 mg/g. When kombu is boiled in water for 15 minutes it can lose up to 99% of its iodine content, while boiled sargassum loses around 40%. The seaweed consumption in Japan is about 5 grams per day. Because the concentration of iodine varies in seaweeds, it is best to eat a few different varities of seaweed to get enough iodine without overdosing. Supplements include Lugol's Solution, Potassium Iodide (SSKI), Povidone Iodine (PVP-I), and Iodoral.

High iodine intake can cause health problems in people with pre-existing thyroid disorders. Transient hypothyroidism and iodine induced goiter is common in Japan and can be reversed in most cases by restricting iodine intake. For some conditions, and for some patients who do not respond to the typical Japanese consumption, doses of 50 to 100 mg of iodine per day are used; however, such large doses should only be used with careful supervision to ensure that the patient does not develop thyroid problems.

Kefir

By eating kefir, the beneficial microorganisms flood the intestines and become the dominant species, leaving little room for harmful strains of candida to settle. The typical dose to heal candida is at least a cup per day.

Kefir is a fermented milk beverage which originated in the northern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains, believed to date back at least a thousand years. The folk of this region, who may of developed kefir by accident, consumed the nutritious beverage in large quantities. They were renowned for longevity, living long, healthy lives. An active life span of over one hundred years was common for folks who liberally consumed kefir as part of a staple diet.

Kefir is made by kefir grains and has a uniform, slightly creamy consistency, a sour refreshing flavour, with a slight subtle aroma of fresh yeast. Kefir also has a slightest hint of a natural effervescent zesty tang. There are around forty aromatic compounds contributing to the unique flavour and distinctive pleasant aroma of kefir. Rounding this off, kefir contains between 0.08% to 2% alcohol, typically around 0.1% alcohol for one day cultured kefir. Whereas kefir stored for a number of days after separating the natural mother-culture contains up to 3% alcohol, depending on the type of base and ripening conditions. Kefir grains are symbiotic organisms made up of beneficial lactic acid bacteria (LAB), vinegar producing bacteria and beneficial yeasts. Some of the yeast are candida, but these are beneficial strains, like candida lambica, candida lamica, candida gueretana, and candida valida. The starter cultures for milk kefir and water kefir are different. Milk kefir grains consist of many individual white to bone-coloured mostly self-enclosed bodies made up of a soft, gelatinous biological mass somewhat resembling cooked cauliflower rosettes. Water kefir grains are firm, transparent and fragile, they are also called sugary kefir grains (SKG).

Kefir can be made at home with a starter culture and a base, such as animal milk (goat, cow), whey powder and sugar, or water and sugar. The starter culture should be kefir grains from a batch of live kefir. To make milk kefir put one or two tablespoons of kefir grains in one cup of milk, and leave it to ferment for 12 to 48 hours at a temperature of 18 degrees C (64 degrees F) to 30 degrees C (86 degrees F). It needs a longer period with fewer kefir grains or lower temperatures. At first the milk thickens, then it starts to set, then it separates into curds and whey. You can eat it at whatever stage you like. When your kefir is ready, remove the grains with a fork. If you do not want to make another brew immediately, you can store the grains covered with milk or kefir in the refrigerator. Freezing the grains will probably destroy them. You can use pasteurised, raw milk, full-cream, low-fat milk, even whey powder mixed with water. Traditionally it is made with raw, unhomogenised milk, and that is what makes the best kefir, and is by far the most nutritious and digestible. Kefir can also be made with nut milks, but the kefir grains are destroyed by the nut milk. Kefir should not be stored in a metal container, it should preferably be stored in a glass or ceramic container. There is no need to wash the kefir grains between each brew, however, it is good practice to give the grains a rest in filtered water every few months for 12 to 24 hours, and the water produced is a nourishing drink. Water kefir is best cultured for no longer than two days in the same solution, with the occasional three day fermentation being acceptable, especially in cooler conditions. Water kefir need minerals in the water to grow well, they prefer hard water, they will not grow in distilled water.

Sites which sell live kefir starter cultures worldwide include Dom's About Kefir Site - Ordering Kefir Grains and Other Products, and Real Kefir Grains - Order Kefir Grains. GEM Cultures also sells kefir starter cultures, but only in the United States. There are also directories of people who share real kefir grains listed on the Finding Kefir Grains site.

There are powdered cultures in store called kefir starters, but they don't have yeasts so they do not have the full power of kefir. There are also kefir drinks for sale, but they don't have as much bacteria as kefir from cultures and they usually don't have yeasts. The effectivess rating of ten is for home made kefir from kefir grains, kefir from cultures without yeasts would be given a rating of eight, and store bought kefir drinks without yeasts would be given a rating of six.

Kefir can also be applied topically to treat thrush. Generally thrush can only be permanently cured by healing the whole body, but that can take many months, and applying kefir directly to the thrush can bring relief in the meantime.

Because the bacteria in kefir feed off sugar, there is less lactose in animal milk kefir than in the milk base. However, the small amount of lactose remaining can still be a problem for people with lactose intolerance, so lactose intolerant people should use water kefir.

Rutabaga

Rutabaga is a very powerful antifungal. The typical treatment dose is one cup a day. The rutabaga has to be eaten raw to get the full antifungal effect. Because eating rutabaga for the first time sometimes produces a powerful detox reaction, it is best to start with a quarter cup per day, and increase the dose to a full cup a day over a week.

Rutabagas, like all Brassicas, contain dithiolthiones and sulfur, which have antioxidant, antibiotic and antiviral characteristics. Rutabagas are high in fiber, complex carbohydrates, vitamin C, potassium, and manganese. Rutabaga helps boost the immune system, and prevents fungal, viral, and bacterial infections. Rutabaga also prevents cancer, spina bifida, and heart disease. Rutabagas are sometimes recommended for cases of constipation. Firm, weighty, and fairly smooth rutabagas should be chosen, with few leaf scars around the crown and with very few fibrous roots at the base. Soft or shriveled rutabagas are undesirable, because they will be tough when cooked. Because rutabagas store so well, up to one month in the refrigerator and up to four months in commercial cold storage, they are available year round.

Because rutabagas are a very powerful antifungal, the first time they are eaten they may cause a detox reaction from the candida die off. If they are eaten in a large quantity, like a cup, the die off reaction can be severe enough to knock someone unconcious. When eating a rutabaga the first time, start with no more than a quarter cup, also have some vitamin C and molybdenum on hand to minimize the die off reaction if necessary. Rutabagas have mustard oil, so they may cause gas, especially if eaten raw. Rutabagas may cause low thyroid levels.

Viili Yogurt

By eating viili yogurt, the beneficial microorganisms flood the intestines and become the dominant species, leaving little room for candida to settle. Viili yogurt grows at room temperature, making it one of the easiest fermented foods to produce. The typical dose to heal candida is at least a cup per day.

Viili (Finnish viili, Swedish fil) yogurt originates in the Nordic countries. It has a ropey, gelatinous consistency and a pleasantly mild taste from lactic acid. Viili results from the microbial action of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and a surface growing yeast like Geotrichum candidum, which forms a velvet like surface on viili. Most viili cultures also contain yeast strains such as Kluveromyces marxianus and Pichia fermentans. The LAB in viili include Lactococcus lactis cremoris, Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis biovar. diacetylactis, and Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. cremoris. Among those mesophilic LAB strains, the slime forming Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris produce a phosphate-containing heteropolysaccharide, named viilian. Viilian is similar to kefiran produced by kefir grains.

To make viili yogurt put the viili starter in a 500 ml (one pint) glass, ceramic or plastic jar that has a tight fitting lid. Then add pasteurized cold milk, cover it with a paper towel or coffee filter secured with a rubber band, because the ferment needs to breathe. Let it grow at room temperature for 18 to 24 hours. When ready the viili will be firm like honey, if you spoon out a bit the viili should stretch like honey, if you tip the spoon over the viili should slowly descend coming completely off the spoon. The first fermentation may be slower and it may take two or three cycles for the culture to establish itself. As a precaution, the first two or three ferments can be discarded. When the viili has established itself, keep it in the fridge to start the next batch. The typical ratio is 30 ml (one ounce) of viili to 500 ml of milk. The warmer the weather the faster the ferment, the cooler the weather the slower the ferment. Increasing the ratio of starter to milk will speed the ferment. If viili is over-fermented it will produce whey (clear liquid) and/or a flowery top, darker and yellowish in color. However, a flowery top may also be a sign of wild airborne yeasts, which give an unpleasant cheesy taste, if this is the case scrape off and discard the top and adjust the fermentation time, temperature or ratio accordingly. Viili must not be stirred or shaken, as this will mix the watery bottom and the firmer top layers, making viili lumpy and unpleasant to eat. Viili containers must always be stored or transported in an upright position, because even a slight tilting will ruin the consistency.

Viili starter may be used with alternative milks, like soy, almond, and coconut; but is unlikely to reculture after a few generations because viili requires lactose to grow. Therefore a backup dairy based culture should be kept on hand when using alternative milks. Viili yogurt can be made with goat milk although the resulting yogurt may be thinner than yogurt made with whole cow milk. Ultra-pasteurized (UHT) milk is not recommended as the lack of living bacteria in UHT milk makes it difficult for yogurt cultures to perpetuate properly.

Sites which sell live viili starter cultures worldwide include Nick's Natural Nook - Viili Yogurt, Dom's About Kefir Site - Ordering Kefir Grains and Other Products, HappyHerbalist.com - Viili, and Yahoo Store - Viili Dairy/Soy Culture Starter. Sites which sell live viili starter cultures in the United States only include Cultures for Health - Viili, and GEM Cultures - Self Renewing Dairy Cultures.

Viili yogurt can also be applied topically to treat thrush. Generally thrush can only be permanently cured by healing the whole body, but that can take many months, and applying yogurt directly to the thrush can bring relief in the meantime.

Because the bacteria in viili feed off sugar, there is less lactose in viili yogurt than in the milk base. However, the small amount of lactose remaining can still be a problem for people with lactose intolerance, so lactose intolerant people should eat viili from another base. Soy can lead to digestive problems, so it should be avoided also if there is another safe choice. Fortunately, almond and coconut remain as choices, so lactose intolerant people can get the benefits of viili yogurt with reasonable safety, although there will still be a tiny bit of lactose from the viili culture.

Olive Leaf

Olive leaf is a powerful antifungal and immune stimulant. The most active ingredient in olive leaf is oluropein, and the treatment dose is about a 1,000 mg/day of oluropein. The amount of extract to take is 1,000 mg/day divided by the concentration. For the typical oluropein concentration of 20% oluropein, that works out to 5,000 mg/day. This amount of extract typically costs 20$ to 50$ each month. Because taking olive leaf for the first time sometimes produces a detox reaction, it is best to start with a quarter dose and work up.

The most active ingredients of olive leaf extract are oleuropein and elenolic acid, and there are other phytochemicals such as hydroxytyrosol, and tyrosolare. In the body, enzymes convert oleuropein to d-elenolic acid (‘right handed’ elenolic acid), which is the main compound responsible for the effectiveness of olive leaf extract. The mirror image compound l-elenolic acid (’left-handed’ elenolic acid) and its synthetic salts such as calcium elenolate are not effective, because they quickly become attached to amino acids in the blood and are inactivated. Oleuropein has antiseptic, anti-protozoan, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties, is a very powerful antioxidant, protects LDL (good) cholesterol, stimulates the immune system and may have anti-cancer properties.

Olive leaf extract products include Ageless - Olive Leaf Extract Capsules - 500 mg - 18%, Dr. Ronald Hoffman - Olive Leaf Extract - 500 mg - 20%, Olive Leaf Extract - Olivex - 500 mg - 20%, and Olivus - OliveLeafMAX Capsules - 250 mg - 25%.

Olive leaf powder, olive leaf tea, or shredded olive leaves can also be used, however, the amount of oleuropein varies amoung sources and is rarely listed, so the correct dose can only be estimated. A typical dose for olive leaf tea is 10 g/day. Because after the detox reaction has passed olive leaf is safe even in high doses, a dose of 20 g/day could be used to be almost certain of getting enough oleuropein.

When taking olive leaf for the first time, it is best to start with a quarter dose and work up, also have some vitamin C and molybdenum on hand to minimize the die off reaction if necessary. If a die off reaction occurs, no more olive leaf should be taken until the symptoms subside, then the treatment can be restarted.

Yogurt

By eating live yogurt, the beneficial bacteria flood the intestines and become the dominant species, leaving little room for candida to settle. The typical dose to heal candida is at least a cup per day.

Only live yogurt, with living bacteria, has the beneficial effect. The more strains of bacteria in the yogurt, the better. A good yogurt will have at least five strains of bacteria. Common strains of bacteria are L. Bulgaricus, S. Thermophilus, L. Acidophilus, B. Longum, L. Casei, and B. Bifidum. Plain unsweetened full fat yogurt is the best to treat candida.

Yogurt can be made at home with a starter culture and a base, such as animal milk (goat, cow), almond milk, coconut milk, and soy milk. The starter culture can be a store bought culture, or from a batch of live yogurt. First pasteurize the base by heating it to 85 degrees C (185 degrees F), then let it cool to 43 degrees C (110 degrees F), add the starter culture, and as long as the temperature is kept at 43 degrees C (110 degrees F) the culture will grow. The longer the culture is at the optimal growth temperature, the thicker the yogurt will be. When the yogurt reaches the consistency you prefer, move it to the fridge. The typically growth time for yogurt from animal milk is three to seven hours, and yogurt from coconut and almond milk typically takes seven to twelve hours. A convenient way to keep the culture at the optimal temperature is to use a yogurt maker, like the Williams Sonoma - Automatic Yogurt Maker, or the Yolife - Yogurt Maker. Because the beneficial bacteria eventually die off, freshly made yogurt will usually have more bacteria than store bought yogurt. The effectivess rating of six is for home made yogurt, store bought yogurt would be given a rating of four.

Yogurt can also be applied topically to treat thrush. Generally thrush can only be permanently cured by healing the whole body, but that can take many months, and applying yogurt directly to the thrush can bring relief in the meantime.

Because the bacteria in yogurt feed off sugar, there is less lactose in animal milk yogurt than in the milk base. However, the small amount of lactose remaining can still be a problem for people with lactose intolerance, so lactose intolerant people should eat yogurt from another base. Soy can lead to digestive problems, so it should be avoided also if there is another safe choice. Fortunately, almond and coconut remain as choices, so assuming a person doesn't have a problem with every base, they can safely get the benefits of yogurt.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper is a fungicide and it improves digestion and removal of toxins. People often start taking 1/8th to 1/16th of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper in 70 mL of very warm water of no hotter than 35,000 to 45,000 Scoville heat units (SHU) cayenne pepper. Many build up from there all the way to a teaspoon. Cayenne pepper is also available in capsules, one capsule of cayenne is around 450 milligrams, roughly 1/4th to 1/3rd of a teaspoon.

Cayenne pepper belongs to the Capsicum family and its botanical name is Capsicum annuum. It is the red or green chili pepper that is used to add flavor in food. Cayenne contains capsaicin, vitamin A, C, E, K, carotenoids and the complete B complexes. It is also a source of calcium, potassium, manganese and dietary fiber. Cayenne pepper is a fungicide and it helps treat candida by improving digestion, leaving less undigested food to feed candida, and stimulating the flow of stomach secretions and saliva, which helps remove toxins. Also to a small extent it also breaks up mucus and fibroids, which are breeding grounds for candida and other diseases.

Very hot cayenne pepper powders include Butcher and Packer - Whole Red Pepper - 90,000 Scoville units, and The Great North American Spice Company - Cayenne Pepper - 90,000 Scoville Units.

Cayenne pepper should always be taken with a meal, never on an empty stomach. Cayenne pepper doses should be started small, and increased slowly over at least several days until the target dose is reached or there are adverse effects. Excess consumption may cause burning sensations in the throat, stomach, or rectum.

Curcumin/Turmeric

Curcumin inhibits candida's adhesion. The typical treatment dose is 2 grams of dried powdered root per day, or 500 milligrams of curcumin powder three times a day.

Curcumin is the active ingredient of the Indian/Asian curry spice turmeric, curcumin is the principal curcuminoid in turmeric. Curcumin treats candida by inhibiting candida's adhesion. Curcumin is also an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

Curcumin might increase the risk of bleeding and so may be inadvisable if you are taking anti-coagulants.

Boron

Boron, especially at high doses, is a fungicide. The cheapest safe source of boron is borax, boric acid must never be taken orally. The typical candida treatment dose is 1/8 teaspoon of borax per day for low to normal weight people, and 1/4 teaspoon for heavier people. The borax is dissolved in one liter of water and taken throughout the day. The borax is usually taken four days a week on, and three days off. The dose should be started small, at 1/32 of a teaspoon, then increased to the target dose over a month, to avoid a possible detox reaction from candida die off. If you get die off reactions, like nausea, dizziness, and diarrhea, stop taking borax until the reaction subsides, then you can build up slowly again. Borax in these large quantities must not be taken directly, it must be taken with water throughout the day.

The cheapest safe source of boron is borax, boric acid must never be taken orally. Borax is sodium tetraborate decahydrate, with the molecular formula Na2B4O7·10H2O and molar mass of 381. The boron component of the molar mass is 43, so by mass boron is 11.2% of borax. Borax is also called sodium borate, sodium borate decahydrate, disodium salt, sodium tetraborate, and disodium tetraborate decahydrate. The density of powdered borax is 1.71 grams/mL, so one teaspoon is about 8.55 grams of borax, which has 0.96 grams (960 mg) of boron. One eighth of a teaspoon of borax has 120 mg of boron, one quarter of a teaspoon of borax has 240 mg of boron, and 1/32 of a teaspoon of borax has 30 mg of boron. Borax is usually in the laundry section, brands include 20 Mule Team Borax, and Pascoes - Bare Essentials Borax. Other ways to get borax are listed in the Borax Cures Questions section, and on page 6 and page 7 of the Borax Cures site. The 20 Mule Team Borax box has about 2 kg of borax, which gives about 7,500 daily doses of borax (245 monthly doses), each containing 30 mg of boron, and costs about 7 USD, so 0.028 USD/month, 840 times cheaper than the capsule price. Boron itself is dirt cheap, the reason why the capsules are relatively expensive is because the capsule ingredients have to be guaranteed food grade, mixed with fillers, and packaged.

At low doses, like 1/32 of a teaspoon, there may be a mild die off reaction, and at doses of 1/8 of a teaspoon or greater, there could be a severe die off. Boron also gets rid of fluorine, and balances the calcium concentrations in the body. The problem is that killing a fungal infection releases all the fungal poisons at once, leading to a detox reaction, typically nausea, dizziness, and diarrhea. Likewise, higher amounts of calcium and fluoride passing through the kidneys may cause temporary kidney pain. Also, as the calcium is redistributed it can cause severe cramping and pain, or problems with blood circulation or nerve transmission. That's why boron doses should be started small and stopped when there are adverse effects, then restarted small again. That's also why boron must be taken with water, to ensure that there is always enough water for the kidneys to excrete the calcium and fluorine. Overall, boron in small quantities is safe, and those quantities are enough to treat arthritis, which is the most common medical use of boron. However, the larger quantities required to treat fungal infections can be dangerous and must be approached cautiously.

Garlic

Garlic has been used to treat fungal infections since at least 1,500 BC. The typical treatment dose is at least three cloves of crushed garlic per day.

Aged garlic extract (AGE) is aged for up to twenty months. Over this time period the harsh and irritating compounds in garlic beak down into stable and safe sulfur compounds. Aged garlic extract contains primarily water-soluble sulfur compounds as well as a smaller amount of oil-soluble sulfur compounds.

Excessive consumption of garlic can lead to garlic odor on breath and skin, occasional allergic reactions, occasional increase in bronchial asthma and contact dermatitis, a chance of stomach disorders and diarrhea, and a decrease in serum protein and calcium levels. Garlic thins blood, so if you are taking large amounts of garlic you should not take blood thinners such as aspirin, coumadin or warfarin. Aged garlic extract does not lead to as much odor, but it is more expensive than eating garlic directly.

Oregano Oil

Oregano oil is a powerful antifungal and immune stimulant. The candida treatment dose is 2 drops, 3 times a day, for a total of 6 drops/day. The most active ingredient in oregano oil is carvacrol, and a good oil will have at least 50% carvacrol. Because taking oregano oil for the first time sometimes produces a detox reaction, it is best to start with a third of the dose and work up.

The ancient Greeks used oregano topically to treat ringworm and body fungus. “Oregano” is derived from the Greek “oros” (mountain) and “ganos” (joy). Native to the Mediterranean and western Asia, oregano was brought to the Americas and now grows wild in parts of Mexico and the United States. It is usually used as a culinary spice, however it would have to be sprinkled in large quantities to get a good measure of its antiseptic benefits. Oil from oregano leaves is the best way to tap into its antimicrobial power, but the leaves, flowers and roots can be used to make an expectorant tea.

Oregano oil is stored in micro-droplets in the oil-bearing glands of the plant's leaves. The leaves are crushed or ground to rupture some of the gland cell walls, then the leaf mush is steam-distilled to coax out the oil, and the resulting amber oil smells like camphor. Most of oregano oil's antiseptic power comes from carvacrol and thymol, which work together to kill microbes. There are two grades of of oregano oil. Essential oil of oregano is for topical use only, and medicine grade oregano oil from Origanum vulgare is an unadulterated oil that is safe to take internally. Sometimes oil of oregano sold in stores is actually marjoram or thyme oil, which have little of oregano's antiseptic qualities. True oil of oregano, from the plant Origanum vulgare, is amber or brown, while thyme and marjoram oils, are either clear or reddish.

Oregano oil products include Beeyoutiful - Oregano Essential Oil, Curing Herbs.com - Oil of Wild Oregano, and Naturopath - Wild Oregano Oil Capsules. There's a list of oregano oil products at the bottom of the Oil of Oregano page.

When taking oregano oil for the first time, it is best to start with a third of the dose and work up, also have some vitamin C and molybdenum on hand to minimize the die off reaction if necessary. If a die off reaction occurs, no more oregano oil should be taken until the symptoms subside, then the treatment can be restarted. Oregano oil can impair the body’s ability to absorb iron. Pregnant women should avoid oregano oil as it could increase blood flow to the uterus weakening the lining surrounding the fetus. Some patients may be allergic to the oil and get skin rashes. Oregano oil thins the blood so it should not be taken with blood thinners, such as aspirin, coumadin or warfarin.

Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE)

Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) is a powerful antiseptic. The treatment liquid dose for typical candida cases is 3 drops in at least 150 ml (5 ounce) of water, vegetable, orange or grapefruit juice, twice daily. For resistant cases, the dose is 6 drops per serving. Because taking grapefruit seed extract for the first time sometimes produces a detox reaction, it is best to start with one drop per serving and work up. Some products have a different concentration, also some are capsules, so the above dosage is just a guideline, follow the manufacturers dosage instructions, and start with about a third of the dosage to minimize the detox reaction.

Grapefruit seed extract starts with grapefruit pulp and seed dried and ground into a powder, then the fiber and pectin is removed, the powder is dissolved in glycerin, ammonium chloride and ascorbic acid are added, the mixture is heated and undergoes catalytic conversion, finally the mixture is filtered, and treated with ultraviolet. The final extract ends up being 59% diphenol hydroxybenzene, 36% glycerol, 3% ascorbic acid, and about 2% of other compounds. So although grapefruit seed extract starts with grapefruit, it ends up being a mostly synthetic product.

Grapefruit seed extract products include Pure Liquid Gold - Citricidal, NutriBiotic - Grapefruit Seed Extract Liquid Concentrate 2 oz., and Life Extension - GSE Grapefruit Seed Extract.

When taking grapefruit seed extract for the first time, it is best to start with a third of the dose and work up, also have some vitamin C and molybdenum on hand to minimize the die off reaction if necessary. If a die off reaction occurs, no more extract should be taken until the symptoms subside, then the treatment can be restarted. Grapefruit can inhibit enzymatic activity in the digestive system, which results in higher blood concentrations of medications which would be digested by those enzymes, such as coumadin, warfarin, calcium channel blockers, estrogen, and statin drugs. On the other hand, grapefruit seed extract can also impair the body's ability to absorb other medications, such as fexofenadine, itraconazole, and quinidine. Because grapefruit seed extract alters the effectiveness of many medications, if you are taking prescription medications you should discuss possible drug interactions with your doctor. Laboratory studies have found that grapefruit seed extract is toxic in large doses, therefore it is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Chelation

Toxic metals suppress the immune system, which leads to unchecked candida growth. Chelation removes the toxic metals, and since its effects are permanent it is perfect for prevention. The word chelate means pincer like claw. In medicine this word indicates the action of chemically grabbing metals and removing them. Chelation can be done orally or intravenously. Intravenous chelation is faster, but it can only be done in a clinic and there are many potential intravenous therapy adverse effects, therefore it should only be done in cases of acute metal poisoning. For all other illnesses, chelation should be done orally.

Because chelating chemicals remove all metals, including essential metals, safe chelation requires that the essential metals be replenished throughout the therapy. A good chelating system will provide the patient essential metals in the morning, and chelating chemicals just before sleep. Different foods and chemicals have different affinities for different metals, for example cilantro is good at removing mercury and EDTA is good at removing lead, also some chelators require other chemicals to chelate toxic metals, so to remove all the toxic metals the chelating system should have many chelators or helper chemicals, such as alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), cilantro, chlorella, coenzyme Q10, EDTA, garlic, L-Cysteine, magnesium, methionine, methysulfonylmethane (MSM) N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC), selenium, sodium alginate, taurine, vitamin B12, and vitamin C. To add to the metal supplementation in the morning, while on chelation therapy the patient should eat many foods which have a high ratio of minerals to calories, such as root vegetables. The removed metals will leave through the urine, stool, sweat, or hair. To help this along, drink lots of water, eat lots of fiber, and sweat more with exercise and/or a sauna.

Extreme Health USA has two chelation systems, the vegetarian Heavy Metal Detox Supplement and with EDTA, the Heart Plus Detox Supplement. They both include a morning supplement to provide metals in the morning.

Science Formulas has two chelation products, the caplet bulk jar, Oral Chelation Caplet Formula and the liquid bottle, Oral Chelation Liquid Formula. The full treatment requires either the caplet bulk jar or three liquid bottles. Their morning supplement, Multi Chelation Support Formula, is sold separately.

There are many foods and chemicals which treat candida safely, but once the patient stops taking them, most of the effects stop. Chelation has the advantage that once the metals are removed, they're gone forever, making chelation one of the best preventation measures, because taking it once gives lifetime candida protection. It is still a good idea to take mild chelation therapy every few years because in that time the body will get more toxic metals, and also no single round of chelation therapy removes all the toxic metals.

Copper

Copper is a fungicide. The typical supplementation dose is 2 mg/day. The total treatment dose is 3 mg/day, and the typical US diet provides 1 mg/day, giving the typical supplementation dose of 2 mg/day. The supplementation should ideally be from food.

Copper compounds are effective fungicides. Copper containing enzymes include superoxide dismutase (SOD), a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, and lysyl oxidase, which helps produce connective tissue such as collagen and elastin. Copper deficiency symptoms include anemia, bone disorders, a defective spinal cord, hernias, hair greying, hair becoming fine and straight, infertility, wrinkling skin; weak connective tissue as evidenced by heart problems such as enlarged heart, weak aorta with holes and ruptures, aneurisms, and varicose veins.

Copper rich foods include liver, seeds (sesame, sunflower, pumpkin, and squash), oysters (steamed wild eastern, then wild, and finally farm raised), nuts (cashews, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, walnuts), calamari, and lobster. For copper supplements, because the amount of copper required is tiny, and because copper reduces the absorption of zinc and molybdenum, it is best to get copper in combination with other minerals, with a ratio of one part copper to roughly fifteen parts zinc. Supplements with zinc, copper and molybdenum include Life Extension - Only Trace Minerals and Natural Vitamin Direct - Chelated Multiminerals Iron Free. Of the two the Life Extension - Only Trace Minerals generally has higher quantities of each element.

Getting copper from food is reasonably safe, partly because copper rich food is usually also rich in zinc. However, excess copper from supplements without extra zinc may lead to adverse effects such as cancer, and yeast infections. People with Wilson’s disease must not take additional copper. Copper bracelets give a widely varying amount of copper, so they should not be used because they often give too little copper which means they have no effect, or too much copper in which case they will also have adverse effects. A small proportion of people do happen to absorb enough copper from bracelets to get a benefit; however those people would get that benefit from copper rich food or supplementation anyways, without the possibility of adverse effects. Overall, copper is best obtained from food.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) normalizes the body's pH, which keeps candida in check, and makes it harder for parasites to adhere to the intestinal tract. The typical dose for MSM is 2,000 mg by mouth twice daily, for a total of 4,000 mg/day. The dose should be started small, at 500 mg/day, then increased to the target dose at 500 mg/day each week over seven weeks, to avoid a possible detox reaction from toxin release. If you get toxin release reactions, like flu-like symptoms or re-experiencing the effects of drugs taken in the past, stop taking MSM until the problems subside, then you can build up slowly again.

For pure MSM, the bulk powder is the cheapest form. Ultrapure MSM flakes are claimed to be more bioavailable. Bulk powder products include Life Extension - MSM - 907 grams, and EvolutionHealth.com - MSM Powder - 454 g. Ultrapure MSM flake products include NaturoDoc - SuperSulfur Crystals - 454 g, and Organic Sulfur - Bioavailable MSM - 454 g.

Sulfur is an activator of vitamin A, C, D, and E, thiamine, biotin, pantothenic acid, selenium, calcium, germanium, collagnol and dismuzyme. Sulfur is used by the liver to manufacture bile. MSM helps control acidity in the stomach, so it can help ulcers. Sulfur helps maintain the body's crucial acid/alkaline (pH) balance, when the pH is out of balance candida spreads. MSM coats the intestinal tract so parasites lose their ability to hang on and are then flushed away. Energy levels increase with MSM because it make cell walls more permeable. Because sulfur is a component of insulin, MSM can raise insulin production if there is insufficient sulfur in the diet. MSM can help control chronic constipation. MSM can relieve allergies.

MSM enables tissues to release toxins that have built up over the years. Sulfur is a vital part of the waste management system, and without enough tissues are unable to release some toxins. Taking too much MSM at the beginning may cause the body to release too much waste at one time for the kidneys and liver to handle. This waste in the blood stream can cause problems ranging from flu-like symptoms to re-experiencing the effects of drugs taken in the past. The key to reducing detox symptoms is to start on MSM slowly so that the waste in the tissues is released slowly and to drink lots of water so that the released toxins will be quickly flushed out. MSM is also a blood thinner, and should not be taken with other blood thinners, such as aspirin, coumadin or warfarin. Also MSM interferes with the liver enzyme test; so if you are taking that test you should stop taking MSM four days before to avoid a false positive, afterwards you can resume taking MSM.

Wheatgrass Juice

Wheatgrass juice helps the body detoxify. The typical dose is 60 ml/day. The wheatgrass juice should be made at least 4 hours after cutting because the hormone abscisic acid (ABA) is 40 times more potent 4 hours after cutting the wheatgrass than it is at the time of cutting. The wheatgrass should be grown outdoors, because indoor grown wheatgrass has high levels of mold and bacteria.

Outdoor grown wheatgrass powders include Pines - Wheat Grass Powder, and Florida Herb House - Wheatgrass Juice Powder. Outdoor grown frozen juices include Seven Grains Natural Market - Evergreen Organic Wheatgrass Juice, and Dynamic Greens - Juices. If you are ordering online, it is best to get the powders, because the frozen juices may thaw by the time you receive them.

Wheatgrass contains at least 13 vitamins (several are antioxidants), including B12, many minerals and trace elements, including selenium, and all 20 amino acids. It also contains over 30 other enzymes, including the antioxidants superoxide dismutase (SOD) and cytochrome oxidase, the hormone abscisic acid (also called dormin), chlorophyll, and laetrile. Furthermore, wheatgrass is one of the most alkaline foods. Wheatgrass juice helps the body detoxify; it cleans the lymphatic system, and flushes out encrustrations and faecal matter in the intestines and the colon.

Wheatgrass grown indoors has mold. The mold can lead to a reaction, sometimes an anaphylactic reaction. Indoor growers claim this mold is harmless and that any reaction is a detox reaction, however, there is overwhelming evidence that the mold is harmful. Detox reactions generally last for a day or two, up to a week for a severe reaction, but they always pass eventually because the susceptible part of the candida dies and the toxins are flushed out. A permanent reaction can not be a detox reaction, it must be a reaction to a treatment. There are powders and juices from outdoor grown wheatgrass, there is no good reason to buy indoor grown wheatgrass. The safety rating of five is for outdoor grown wheatgrass, indoor grown wheatgrass would have a rating of two.

Zinc

Zinc treats candida by stimulating the immune system. The typical supplementation dose is 15 mg/day. The total treatment dose is 25 mg/day, and the typical US diet provides 10 mg/day, giving the typical supplementation dose of 15 mg/day. The supplementation should ideally be from food.

Zinc stimulates the production of T lymphocytes, immune system cells which clean up cells that have been infected. Zinc is a key component of copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD). Zinc is necessary for strong bones, healthy skin, thymus gland function, spermatogenesis, wound healing, resistance to cancer. Zinc deficiency is associated with higher infant mortality, impaired growth in children, delays in sexual maturation, infertility, lethargy, numerous diseases, diarrhea, anemia and DNA damage.

Zinc rich foods include oysters (highest in steamed wild eastern), wheat germ, liver, seeds (sesame, pumpkin, and squash, watermelon), nutritional yeast, beef, lamb, and peanuts. For zinc supplements, because the amount of zinc required is tiny, and because zinc reduces the absorption of copper which in turn should be taken with molybdenum, it is best to get zinc in combination with other minerals. Supplements with zinc, copper and molybdenum include Life Extension - Only Trace Minerals and Natural Vitamin Direct - Chelated Multiminerals Iron Free. Of the two the Life Extension - Only Trace Minerals generally has higher quantities of each element.

Getting zinc from food is reasonably safe, partly because zinc rich food is usually also rich in copper. Zinc has a tolerable upper limit of 40 mg/day, taking more than that risks copper deficiency, headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, fever, chills, weakened immune system and anemia. The diuretic medication amiloride can reduce the amount of zinc excreted from your body, which means taking zinc supplements could lead to toxic levels. If you have liver or kidney disease, it is important to talk to your health care provider because doses recommended for general use might not apply to you.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a fungicide, it improves digestion, and it seals the intestinal wall. The typical treatment dose of aloe vera juice is 200 ml/day.

Products which contain some aloe vera juice are widely available, however, companies can claim 100% aloe vera juice if they add only one tablespoon of 100% aloe vera juice to a gallon of water. Additionally, companies can claim their product to be cold processed if they use High Temperature Short Time (HTST) processing. Juices with properly processed aloe vera include Global Healing Center - Aloe Vera Juice: 100% Organic - Cold Processed, and GoodCauseWellness.com - Aloe Vera100 Drink Mix.

Aloe vera contains anti-inflammatory compunds such as bradykininase, salicylates, phytosteroids and vitamins A, B, C and E. Aloe vera also has cinnamic acid, an antifungal and antiparasitic, and acemannan, an antiviral, antiparasitic and antifungal. Overall, aloe vera helps treat most types of infections.

Aloe vera may lower blood sugar, so those with diabetes should be cautious when taking it orally. Aloe vera can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and electrolyte imbalances.

Astragalus

Astragalus is a powerful immune stimulant. The most active class of compounds in astragalus are the astragalosides. The typical dose for raw astragalus root is 15 g/day brewed as tea or added to food, for granulated or finely chopped or ground astragalus, the dose is 2 heaping teaspoons per day, for 10:1 extract, the dose is one rounded teaspoon per day. For a standardized astragalus extract, the dose is around 13 mg of astragalosides per day. For pure astragaloside IV, the dose is around 40 mg/day.

Astragalus activates the production of telomerase in human cells. Telomerase is an enzyme that prevents the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes from being eroded away, leading to cell death. Ordinarily, the number of times a cell can divide is limited to a certain number called the Hayflick limit, due to this telomere erosion. When enough telomerase is added to cells, it can enable the replacement of eroded telomeres so the cells can divide without limit. The telomerase activated by astragalus is only sufficient to lengthen critically short telomeres, it does not lengthen intermediate length telomeres; however, even this limited elongation is enough to have beneficial effects. This telomere lengthening helps in many ways, such as stimulating bone marrow blood cells and enhancing deep immune strength.

Astragalus helps the immune system in other ways besides lengthening telomeres. The polysaccharides in astragalus increase phagocytosis (the engulfing of microorganism invaders by the immune system), increase production of immunoglobulins and macrophages and modulate the pituitary-adrenal cortical activity. Astragalus protects the kidneys and lungs from damage from autoantibody complexes, regulates sweating, decreases fatigue and increases tolerance to stress. Astragalus protects against oxidative damage by increasing mitochondrial function without increasing the mitochondrial oxygen consumption.

Astragalus products which have significant amounts of astragalosides include Finlandia - New Roots Ageless Telomeres - 13.5 mg, Vitamart.ca - New Roots Ageless Telomeres - 13.5 mg, Terraternal - Astragaloside IV - 40 mg, and Generic-TA-65 - Astragaloside IV - 40mg. While the astragalosides are the most active class of compounds in astragalus, some of the other compounds in astragalus are also useful, so the New Roots Ageless Telomeres product, which has 450 mg astragalus root per capsule with 3% astragalosides, for a total of 13.5 mg of astragalosides, may have a similar utility to the pure Astragaloside IV products, even though it has less astragalosides.

There is speculation that astragalus should be used two weeks on and two weeks off in order to avoid giving cancer cells a boost, although there is no evidence that astragalus promotes cancer, according to the Patton protocol; also some people alternate astragalus consumption because astragalus may interfere with other supplements. However, there is no experimental evidence that it is necessary or even useful to alternate consumption. An allergic reaction rarely occurs when taking astragalus, however; individuals who have allergies to other legumes are more at risk of developing an allergy to astragalus. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rashes, hives with itching, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, and difficulty breathing. Additional adverse effects include hypotension (low blood pressure), and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Possible gastrointestinal adverse effects include nausea, bloating and upset stomach, gas, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, passage of bloody or black stools or constipation. Astragalus may interfere with blood clotting; therefore patients having surgery, and those taking blood thinners, like aspirin, coumadin or warfarin should not take astragalus.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a topical antiseptic, especially good for oral thrush. The dose for oral thrush is three drops on a tooth brush, which is then used to softly brush the tongue. Topical glycerin is reasonably safe, so if the oral thrush is thick, the dose can be increased until the thrush is removed. It can be done after each meal, typically three times a day, to keep the tongue clean.

Glycerin works by hygroscopic action; it instantly pulls the water out of microorganisms. It can also be sipped and swished, especially on the back of the tongue for instant sweet breath. It can also be brushed onto teeth to whiten them and remove some stains. It is an approved food additive, used in small quantities in many products, and it is present in large quantities in ice cream.

It typically costs 6$ for a 125 ml (about 4.5 ounces) bottle. A drop is about 0.05 ml, so three drops is 0.15 ml. At 0.15 ml/treatment, three times a day, that's 0.45 ml/day, so a typical bottle will last over two hundred days. Generally thrush can only be permanently cured by healing the whole body, but that can take many months, and applying glycerin directly to the thrush can bring relief in the meantime. The effectiveness of glycerin as a topical antiseptic is rated at ten; however it is rated at one overall because glycerin is only useful topically.

Although glycerin is in small quantities in many foods, it is not completely safe to ingest so it should not be swallowed; after applying it to the tongue it should be removed. It can be removed by brushing it down the tongue and out, or by gargling with water then spitting out the water and glycerin mixture. Ingesting large amounts of vegetable glycerin can upset the stomach and result in nausea, diarrhea and in rare cases inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, called gastroenteritis. Some forms of vegetable glycerin may cause allergic reactions, especially if the patient is sensitive to oils, such as coconut and palm oil. Some vegetable glycerin compounds also contain sulfites, and a sensitivity to sulfite can cause asthma-like symptoms and a generalized allergic reaction.

Magnesium

Extra magnesium is necessary for candida sufferers because candida reduces the absorption of magnesium from food. The typical supplementation dose is 8 mg/kg/day, which works out to 560 mg/day for a 70 kg person. The total treatment dose is 13 mg/kg/day, and the typical US diet provides 5 mg/kg/day, giving the typical supplementation dose of 8 mg/kg/day. The supplementation should be from food, or at least partially in the form of magnesium oxide.

Candida impairs the digestive system, so candida sufferers absorb less minerals from food. Because the typical diet provides barely enough magnesium to start with, candida sufferers end up with deficient in magnesium which, in turn, leads to many problems including cardiovascular disease, migraines, impaired memory, weak bones, asthma, and cancer. Magnesium oxide has the additional property that when mixed with water and consumed, it liberates oxygen in the intestinal tract, which encourages healthy, aerobic bacteria (which need oxygen) and at the same time inhibits the growth of unhealthy bacteria and fungi like candida.

Magnesium rich foods include seeds (pumpkin, squash, watermelon, flax, sesame, and sunflower), bran (rice, wheat, and oat), and nuts (brazil nuts, almonds, cashews, and pine nuts). Supplements with magnesium oxide include Life Extension - Magnesium - 500 mg and Doctors' Research - Magnesium Complex - 100 mg. Pure magnesium oxide supplements include Nature's Bounty - Magnesium Oxide - 500 mg, and Nature Made - Magnesium - 250 mg.

Getting magnesium from food is reasonably safe. However, very large doses of magnesium from supplements may cause adverse effects such as nausea, diarrhea, appetite loss, muscle weakness, abdominal cramps, and extremely low blood pressure. Individuals with kidney failure lose the ability to remove excess magnesium from the blood, and should carefully monitor magnesium supplementation due to the risk of magnesium toxicity. Overall, it is best to get the required magnesium from food. If the patient is not getting enough magnesium from food, then magnesium from supplements can be added to reach the treatment dose of 13 mg/kg/day.

Molybdenum

Molybdenum minimizes the detox reaction from candida die-off. The typical treatment dose is 300 mcg/day. Molybdenum supplementation should be combined with copper and zinc.

When candida is killed it releases up to 79 different toxins, of which the most important are ethanol and acetaldehyde. Molybdenum works with xanthine oxidase and aldehyde oxidase, which support the metabolism of drugs and toxins.

Molybdenum rich foods include lima beans with 8 mcg/g by dry weight, small white beans with 5 mcg/g, yellow split peas, red beans and oatmeal with 2 mcg/g, and breads, pasta, rice and cereals with between 0.2 and 1 mcg/g. Most vegetables, fruits, meats and milk products have less than 0.1 mcg of molybdenum per gram. For molybdenum supplements, because the amount of molybdenum required is tiny, and because molybdenum reduces the absorption of copper which in turn should be taken with zinc, it is best to get molybdenum in combination with other minerals. Supplements with molybdenum, copper and zinc include Life Extension - Only Trace Minerals and Natural Vitamin Direct - Chelated Multiminerals Iron Free.

Because molybdenum reduces the absorption of copper, it is best to get molybdenum in combination with copper and zinc. If molydenum is being obtained from food, sesame seeds have a lot of copper, and zinc rich foods include liver and yeast.

Bromelain

Bromelain treats candida, mainly by breaking up biofilms and scar-like filament called transglutaminase. A dose of 50 mg/day helps with candida, the protective effect increases with dosage and the best results occur when bromelain is given in doses above 500 mg/day. Bromelain is relatively nontoxic, and doses of up to 2,000 mg/day have been used. Most commercial products contain 500 mg of bromelain, manufacturers suggest a dosage regimen of 500 to 1,000 mg daily. Some doctors recommend taking half of the bromelain away from meals if it's being used therapeutically. This frees up the digestive enzymes from digesting foods to perform other healthy functions.

Bromelain is usually extracted from pineapple stems and sometimes from the fruit. People with sensitivity to pineapple, may be sensitive to bromelain. People who are allergic to bee sting may have a similar reaction to bromelain. Bromelain acts as a blood thinner and little is known about how bromelain interacts with blood-thinning drugs, people should avoid combining such drugs with bromelain in order to reduce the theoretical risk of excessive bleeding. Bromelain may also increase the heart rate.

Bromelain is just one of several proteolytic enzymes used to treat candida. The full proteolytic enzyme treatment requires pancreatin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, papain and bromelain, as described in the proteolytic enzymes section, and is more powerful and expensive than bromelain alone.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle minimizes the detox reaction from candida die-off. The active ingredient in milk thistle is silymarin. The typical dose is roughly 400 mg/day of milk thistle extract, standardized to 80% silymarin, divided equally between meals.

When candida is killed it releases up to 79 different toxins, of which the most important are ethanol and acetaldehyde. If the liver can not remove them quickly enough, this results in a wide range of die-off symptoms. Milk thistle supports the liver by stimulating protein synthesis in the liver which helps to repair damaged liver cells, preventing toxins from entering liver cells by helping the cell membranes, and finally by encouraging the growth of new liver cells.

Milk thistle products include Life Extension - Certified European Milk Thistle - 750 mg, and Holland and Barrett - Milk Thistle Capsules - 175mg. A milk thistle product combining a phospholipid with silybin which claims to increase bioavailabilty by a factor of ten is LiverSupport.com - Maximum Milk Thistle - 240 mg.

Milk thistle can be used safely and effectively by a wide range of people, including pregnant and nursing women. Occasionally there is a mild and temporary laxative effect.

Proteolytic Enzymes

Proteolytic enzymes treat candida, mainly by breaking up biofilms and scar-like filament called transglutaminase. A typical dosage for chronic illness is on the label. The Life Extension - Zywobin-Forte dosage is 4 capsules a day. The ModernHerbalist.com - Wobenzym-N dosage is 6 capsules a day.

For full effect, the proteolytic enzymes must contain pancreatin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, papain and bromelain. Some doctors recommend taking half of the proteolytic enzymes away from meals if it's being used therapeutically. This frees up the enzymes from digesting foods to perform other healthy functions.

Adverse effects with high doses of porcine-based pancreatic enzyme therapy are intestinal gas, occasional bloating, and occasional indigestion. People with sensitivity to pineapple, may be sensitive to bromelain. People who are allergic to bee sting may have a similar reaction to bromelain.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C at a high blood concentration boosts the immune system and minimizes the detox reaction. The best way of achieving a high blood concentration of vitamin C is with a liposomal form of vitamin C, which is more bioavailable than regular vitamin C, like Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C, from Livon Laboratories. With the liposomal form of vitamin C, 3 to 6 packets (each with 1,000 mg of vitamin C) a day, divided into three doses a day, will achieve a high blood concentration of vitamin C. A high blood concentration can also be achieved with intravenous vitamin C, but that can only be done in a clinic and there are many potential intravenous therapy adverse effects.

Vitamin C provides support to the adrenals, two small organs that are crucial for metabolism and blood sugar regulation (as well as the body’s production of chemicals like anti-inflammatories and antihistamines), and boosts the immune system. Also vitamin C minimizes the detox reaction from candida die-off.

For best results when taking liposomal vitamin C, mix it with a beverage, drink on an empty stomach, and wait at least 15 minutes before eating. When taking liposomal vitamin C, the consumption of carbohydrates (especially refined sugar) must be limited, because carbohydrates impair oral absorption of this vitamin. It may be possible to make liposomal vitamin C at home with an ultrasonic cleaner; however, the amount that ends up encapsulated is unknown and the blood concentration achieved is also unknown.

A high blood concentration can also be achieved with many (usually six or more) large doses (two grams each or more) of vitamin C per day, however, it is inconvenient to take many doses and there is a large chance of adverse effects like diarrhea. A good form of oral vitamin C is sodium ascorbate. Vitamin C should not be taken with blood thinners, such as aspirin, coumadin or warfarin. Low doses of vitamin C have little or no effect.

Rife

Rife machines might be able to treat candida in some parts of the body if they work properly. Royal Raymond Rife was a brilliant scientist who in the 1930s discovered that subjecting pathogens to their resonance frequency destroyed them in a similar way to how a glass is shattered when a singer hits the right note. In 1934 at his clinic in California, diseased people were exposed to the same frequencies to destroy the pathogen causing their illness. Treatments lasted only three minutes. The person would wait three days before another exposure giving the lymph system time to cleanse the debris from their bodies, and would be free of some pathogens in about thirty such treatments or less.

Treatment starts with a three minute session every three days, then increase treatment time or decrease the treatment interval if little or no die-off symptoms are experienced. There are many frequencies used to treat candida, the most common frequency is 464 Hz.

A problem with using a rife machine to treat candida is that much of the candida is in the digestive system, where the electric field penetrates poorly. Another problem is that the original Rife clinic was put out of operation by the American Medical Association. Other versions of the machine are now being made, however, the frequencies, waveforms, currents and interfaces to the body are often different, so it is difficult to know if a particular machine works. That's why the effectivess of this treatment is rated at 2, if there was a machine known to work properly, the effectiveness of that machine would be 4.

Occasionally, the machine has been used too long at a single session by an inexperienced operator, killing too many pathogens at once, which overloaded the body with debris and harmed the patient. The machine should be used in short sessions at least at the beginning, preferably by an experienced operator.

Vitamin B

The vitamin B complex supports the immune system, which is needed to control candida. The typical treatment dose for vitamin B is several times higher than the recommended daily allowance (RDA). Vitamin B supplements have different ingredient proportions. A good supplement should have at least 10 mg of thiamin (vitamin B1), 10 mg of riboflavin (vitamin B2), 40 mg of niacin (vitamin B3), 10 mg of vitamin B6, 400 mcg of folic acid (vitamin B9), and 25 mcg of vitamin B12. Because of the potential side effects, the dose should be started at a quarter the treatment dose, then increased over three weeks to reach the treatment dose. Food sources of vitamin B are better because they include the entire vitamin B complex, and they are less likely to have adverse effects. Food sources may not have as high a quantity of some subgroups as supplements, but because they include the entire complex, they are effective even in smaller quantities.

The vitamin B complex contains many subgroups, there is no one food which contains a high amount of the entire complex, so to get the high amounts of vitamin B it is necessary to take at least two high vitamin B foods. Foods which have vitamin B include liver, rice polish, brewer's yeat, nutritional yeast, seafood, meat, whole grain cereals, and aloe vera.

Vitamin B supplements include Life Extension - Complete Vitamin B Complex, and Holland and Barrett - Complete B Vitamin B Complex. Most vitamin B complexes have roughly the same amount of ingredients as the Holland and Barrett product. However, the Life Extension product has far higher doses of some vitamins, for example it has 10 times as much thiamin, 7 times as much riboflavin, 8 times as much niacin, 7 times as much vitamin B6, and 40 times as much vitamin B12. Overall, because of the enormous amount of vitamins in the Life Extension complex, by quantity it ends up being cheaper than typical products.

The vitamin B complex, especially vitamin B12, supports the immune system, which is needed to control candida. The other reason candida sufferers should take more B vitamins is because yeast overgrowth lessens the effectiveness of their digestive systems, leaving them deficient in a number of key vitamins, minerals and nutrients, including vitamin B12.

There are rare reports of allergic reaction and anaphylaxis from thiamine, including anxiety, respiratory failure, abdominal pain and shock. More than 100 mg of niacin a day can lead to flushed or irritated skin, itching, headaches, liver inflammation, irregular heartbeat, stomach ulcers, loss of vision, gout and death. For hemophiliacs, an overdose of vitamin B5 can lead to more bleeding. More than 500 mg a day of vitamin B6 may lead to numbness in the extremities, difficulty walking, vomiting, tingling, headache and loss of appetite. High doses of riboflavin may result in bright yellow urine, but this is harmless.
