DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

Black Friday Sales On... Thursday?

This year, something interesting has happened with the holiday sales times. We are used to them being on Friday (which, well, the term is Black Friday, right?). It used to start at around 8 AM or so and then progressively got earlier. Now we are to a whole new area… having Black Friday on Thursday. Wait, what? How is it Friday when it is Thursday? And we are not even talking about midnight, either. Instead, it is more like the evening.

I am very confused as to why this change has happened. If you are not already aware, Black Friday has traditionally been the day right after Thanksgiving. In other words, the day after we spend time with our families and loved ones. With these time changes, it got to where you had to go out Thanksgiving night in order to get the items you want from the sales. As if that was not bad enough, it has now been pushed back to the day before. Now most of the sales are starting soon after it gets dark on Thanksgiving, which means that if you want to get to a store on time you have to leave your dinner early and take off to the store. If you want to get a better chance of obtaining the item you want, you have to leave Thanksgiving morning or earlier.

This seems like it would be the complete opposite of what we want to happen. I mean think about it; we are not prioritizing our shopping above our family time on the holiday. I can not fathom how it got to this point. Many of us had no issues with heading out late at night and being ready for shopping in the morning. This allowed us to spend time with our families during the day, finish our dinner without having to rush, and then deal with shopping as an after thought. Now we have to decide which one is more important, and this is just wrong.

The only real reason I can see for moving earlier would be because there are so many sales going on online now. A lot of things you want to buy do not even require leaving the comfort of your own home now. And stores like Frys Electronics made some pretty big changes, where they would host sales on Thursday online and you could pick the items up on Friday. I can not help but think that this action must help contribute to these big changes, and I really do not think that is a good thing.

This year I headed out to Black Friday shopping somewhat late; soon before the stores opened. I ended up arriving after they were opened, and some of the things I was hunting for were still available. In any other year, I would not have even left the house that late because I would know that everything has already been snagged up. Some people will even buy things they do not want or need, solely because it is on sale and they figure why not. This year, that feeling was just awkward; being able to find things without being outside for many hours waiting on the stores to open. In fact, we hit up two stores and still found items at both that we were looking for.

One thing we are going to have to do is either start having Black Friday sales on the actual Friday or give it a new name. It just does not make any sense with how it is now. Ideally, though, I would much rather have the times pushed back some more, back to where they used to be. We should be able to have plenty of time for our family gathering before we have to deal with stores and purchases. Give us this time so we are not rushed. Soon we are going to end up to where we have to have the family thanksgiving out at the stores instead of at home.

This also goes against all that Black Friday used to be. We used to hang out with many others. We all had something pretty big in common: we all enjoyed the hanging out and waiting for the stores to open. It was not a “fun” like “hey, I would go hang outside a store every day” type of thing, but it is what we were used to and for many of us it was a yearly thing. All of that has been taken away from us now, and the feeling and enjoyment (along with the rush that we used to have) is gone. Now the only rush is wondering if you are going to end up getting shanked or beat up for your items when you are picking them up or are heading out to your vehicle. I want our day back! With the path we are currently taking, the day's name is losing all of its meaning and soon it will just be another day, but with the added benefit of having some good sales.
