DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

Berube’s Response

In Mr. Berube’s essay he talks about it has never been a better time to have Down Syndrome then now. Down Syndrome has been around since the beginning of man. We have been uneducated about Down Syndrome for too long says Berube. Libraries have books on Down Syndrome with photos of children that have their head down and not showing that they can do anything according to Berube. In the 1900s, we would put our children and newborns in a children’s institution. The doctors told the parents that their child with Down Syndrome would not amount to much, according to Berube. The children with Down Syndrome will not be able to do simple tasks like tie their shoes, dress themselves, have a conversation, or the ability to communicate effectively. The doctors according to Berube said you can take your children home for the first 3 to 4 months and bring them back to institution and the child will not care because they will not recognize their parents. The children in the institution did not live past the age of 10. They died of many different illnesses. They were not educated or given the chance to succeed while in the institution. Berube said that in the late 1900s some parents decided to bring their child home and see how it goes. They wanted to love their child even though they have Down Syndrome. Berube states that over the years of having their child at home they started walking, talking, learning but in a different way, and be able to do simple tasks. The children with Down Syndrome were able to live an almost normal life. Berube says that over the year’s people with Down Syndrome have improved as long as the parents are willing to take a chance on their child and not care what others may think.

I agree with Berube that children with Down Syndrome have changed in the way we look at them. We are more educated on people with Down Syndrome than ever before. Doctors in the 1900’s treated patients with Down Syndrome in the same way that modern special education teachers treat students. The doctors and the special education teachers are telling the children’s parents they are not going to amount to anything, the parents are listening to the doctors and teachers, and special education children and Down Syndrome children get special education and learning styles.

The doctors and special education teachers are telling children’s parents that they are not going to amount to anything. If a student is doing poorly in a class, they hold him or her back a year. If the child is failing tests or not communicating correctly then they are going to be a failure in life. The doctors and teachers are telling the parents their children are not going to amount to anything in life because of what the child is doing or behaving. If the child or student does something bad, the teacher or doctor automatically put the child in a category of failure. They cut the students or children down because this is what they were taught or learned from their educators. They cut these students down as we sometimes cut down others because of the way they look or act.

The parents are listening to the doctors and teacher just because they are educated in this field. The doctors tell the parents that you should not bring the child home because they are not going to live a normal life or be able to do anything. The studies have shown that the child with Down Syndrome will not live past ten years old. Therefore, the parents listen to them. The parents also do not want to lose their social status if they bring the child home. The neighbors will treat them differently. This is what was going through the minds of these parents at this time. Things starting changing after a few daring parents decided to bring their child with Down Syndrome home. Most parents just went along with the Doctors and now a days teachers because they should know better. This is what the doctors and teachers studied. Their profession is to know about children with Down Syndrome and special needs children. These parents did not listen to the doctors. They wanted the hand that God had dealt them. It is their child even if he or she has special needs. The parents noticed after the first four months that the child knew who their parents were. Over time, they were able to do simple tasks even if it took a little more time or was not able to do it until they were older. If this movement did not happen, we would still be sending children with Down Syndrome to an institution.

Special education children and Down Syndrome children get special education and learning styles. They need to learn differently from other children. Some teachers cut down these children in the way that doctors did with children that has Down Syndrome. Like saying they are not going to be able to do anything like simple tasks such as tie their own shoes, eat by themselves, or hold a conversations. These students receive modified tests and quizzes. Some can argue that giving them modified or simplified test will help them for their future but I believe they are wrong. In elementary school this may help them but once they get into middle school and high school they should toughen them up with more similar or the same tests and quizzes as the other students. I believe this will help them in the end and if they go to college. In college, there is no special help for these students. They do need special learning styles but we need to reeducate the teachers as we did the doctors that studied children with Down Syndrome. We as the parents need to change it for the better. Everyone needs help at some point including teachers and doctors as we see now and back then.

Now we see how the doctors from the 1900’s and the special education teachers treat children and students in a similar way. The doctors and the special education teachers are telling the children’s parents they are not going to amount to anything, the parents are listening to them, and special education children and Down Syndrome children get special education and learning styles. We are more educated on people with Down Syndrome than ever before so why not do the same with special needs children. Berube makes some good points.
