DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

Adding a TiPS Box to Your Website

Running a website is a really rewarding thing to do intellectually, socially and emotionally – but making it pay financially can be very difficult.

Monetizing a website which isn't based around actually selling specific products – whether its a blog, a community site, a showcase for your photography or other creative talent, or anything else, is often the hardest part of running a website. Many content and community sites use advertising as their main source of revenue, but the problem with this is that most visitors are suffering from severe advertising fatigue and 'ad blindness' – which means that they have learnt to automatically blank out all of the adverts and therefore don't even notice them. Even if they do notice them, they probably aren't interested in whatever overpriced rubbish it is that your advertisers are selling. Some people even have software to deliberately block adverts. The end result of this is that in order to make a website pay for itself, let alone make enough money to pay its owner a half decent wage, website owners must either resort to either introducing ever more intrusive advertising strategies, or they must find another way to generate the needed revenue.

One alternative method to increase revenue is to ask for donations. Most people asking for donations use Paypal to do this, which is ok but not ideal. The problem with Paypal is that if you receive a lot of payments you will have to contend with paying their fees. This means that people have to donate a reasonable amount to make it worthwhile, which most people do not want to do.

Digital currencies are trying to change this. In many ways they are ideal for this kind of tipping – you can send payments of less than a cent if you want and with minimal fees. I know receiving a tiny tip like this may not seem particularly appealing, but if you get hundreds of them they will add up to a worthwhile amount. Supporting a digital currency by adding an option for people to donate using it is also a great way to gain free advertising for your site from the community of users around that coin. If you have a website which is connected in any way with open source development or creative commons media then I would highly recommend adding an option for visitors to donate using Devcoins – you might be surprised by how much you get! For general content websites there is a digital currency called Fedora TiPS which has been designed specifically with this use in mind and has a great community of generous tippers.

In addition to a great community, TiPS also has a convenient way for you to accept tips on your site. A service called w/fedoracoin has developed a payments API for stores wishing to accept tips, and have also included a some free code you can put into your website to generate a simple donation box – you can take a look at a live example and download the script here: http://worldof.tips/donation-script/index.php
