DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

Addiction to Bitcoins

Addiction and Bitcoin are usually seen as two separate topics but they are part of the same topic. Bitcoins are very addictive to those who seek to collect them. The fact that most people are not content unless they have a whole coin is evidence. The fact that if the person has a completely empty wallet they feel inadequate is evidence. Is this level of addiction a good thing?

Bitcoin gains it's value from addiction. This addiction could be addiction to Bitcoin itself such as the case with speculators and collectors. This could be addiction to a product on Silk-road which requires purchasing Bitcoins to get. The fact is that Bitcoin isn't only backed by faith but it's also backed by addiction.

Once again I ask is this addiction a good thing? Honestly it's no better or worse than what backs the dollar. The dollar is backed by addiction, and unlike Bitcoin the dollar is backed also by politics and violent military establishments willing to destroy people for the dollars. Currently Bitcoin does not have that level of organized violence built into it and that may be considered a feature to many. At the same time many people consider it a risk.

In one of my previous writings I explained how Devcoin leverages a concept called variable schedule reinforcement. It is this element in Bitcoin which makes Bitcoin addictive to speculators, gamblers, gamers, drug users, porn watchers, etc. The addiction industries indirectly market Bitcoin because in order to do these adult activities privately and discretely an adult individual has to buy Bitcoins first. This could be the niche that Bitcoin finds itself in and is best suited for at this time, but will it ultimately stay in that niche?

If Bitcoin is to go mainstream it's going to have to break out of that niche at some point. If only people perceived as deviants are using Bitcoins it is not the best way to market Bitcoins. This is ignoring the fact that all currencies are backed by the exact same deviants, but it seems Bitcoin is being held to a much higher standard. Every little problem with Bitcoin is reported by the factions within the media who support the dollar. Nothing is wrong with supporting the dollar but the observant individual has to be aware that media corporations are corruptible, and have hidden interests and benefactors to shape their reporting.

The human brain is the cause of Bitcoin addiction

The the human brain is the main reason behind the Bitcoin addiction phenomena. Neuroscience can explain that the main reason Bitcoins are addictive is because of their influence on the dopamine levels of the brain. I am suggesting that Bitcoins are a dopamine agonist. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter behind the reward mechanism in the brain. This neurotransmitter is activated when an individual is exposed to the Bitcoin currency. It is this dopamine release that helps to create the addiction. It is also important to note that there is a fixed ratio reinforcement mechanism at play as well when an individual is mining and is constantly seeing their mining revenue coming in like clockwork, or when the individual receives dividends from their virtual investments.

Bitcoin and mental illness

The main kind of mental illness which may present itself would be paranoia combined schizophrenia. If an individual suffers from paranoia then they may believe the government is out to get them, to persecute them personally for using Bitcoins. They may believe in conspiracy theories about the NWO, the Illuminati, the FEMA camps and various plots that they either came up with from their own mind or that they got from unconfirmed sources or shock journalists such as Alex Jones. This is not to say that there are no conspiracies, but it is to say that the conspiracies that do exist aren't going to likely be given to Alex Jones, the pastor at church, or anyone like that. The real conspiracies are going to be uncovered by you in your daily life, such as in your workplace or are otherwise local in nature rather than international.

The second kind of popular mental illness is schizophrenia. This could be hearing voices such as the voice of God, or talking to aliens, or communication with the dead or ghosts. These kinds of issues can sometimes combine with paranoia to produce a psychotic synergy of fear based on innuendo, rumors, speculation. Subliminal messages are often used to exploit individuals who have this, so that now the TV is talking directly to them, or a song is speaking directly to them, or they received a direct communication from God on their toast while studying crop circles.

Mental illness in the Bitcoin community can affect trade

If an individual has mental illness they are more likely to make a weak trade because they'll trade on speculation based on what aliens said to do, or what God told them to do, or what Alex Jones said to do, or what they believe the government intends to do. This mental illness will keep many people from getting involved with Bitcoin as an early adopter because they'll be worried about being put on some terrorist watch list or no fly list. These individuals are the individuals concerned with being labeled a pedophile for running the Bitcoin wallet because there could be child porn hidden in the block-chain.

This level of fear, paranoia, and doubt based around FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) is also created by others to deliberately help people make irrational decisions. In the market competitors deliberately spread false memes, false information, rumors, innuendo, or government conspiracy theories to play the market against itself and encourage irrational behavior so that they can capitalize on it. In a panic sell there are always people waiting to stoke the flames to make the sell happen more dramatically so they can profit from the falling prices.

Should Bitcoin addiction be encouraged or discouraged?

Should we decide to encourage it then it would not be hard to make highly addictive applications. Twitter, Facebook, and many other applications are designed specifically to be addictive. You have variable reinforcement schedules. World of Warcaft is designed to be deliberately addictive as well. Bitcoin has Satoshi Dice and Just Dice which are known to be addictive and of course there are the many exchanges which feel a lot like gambling. In the future there may be prediction markets which will take it to the extreme and encourage even further speculation. Is that what we want?
