DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

ArcheAge Guide to Pack Running

Pack running is a major part of ArcheAge. It’s used to carry materials for building things (like houses, ships, etc.) and is also used for trading materials for gold or Gilda Stars. Because it is such an integral part of the game, it’s important to understand how to run packs effectively (and as securely as possible). Let’s take a look!

Obtaining a Pack

Packs are obtained through crafting. They require a lot of materials, and the exact requirements will depend on the type that’s being made. A Stone Brick Pack, for example, requires 100 Stone Bricks. The most important thing to remember when it comes to making packs is that you can only carry one at a time. As such, you only want to craft one at a time. Along with this, you want to be as close to your final destination as possible, as it will cut down the travel time immensely.

Travel Methods

The method of travel you want to use will depend on where you’re taking the pack to. They are as follows:

  • Across the ocean – boats
  • Short distances through water – foot
  • Medium distances across land – donkey
  • Long distances across land – airship or carriage (depending on the paths they are following in comparison to where you’re trying to go)

It is also a good idea to mix and match these as needed. As an example, if you mess up and craft your pack far away from your destination on land, you may use a donkey to catch up to a carriage, then take the carriage to a town with an airship, disembark the airship and use the donkey for the rest of the trip. Basically, keep up with what map you’re on, what all is around you and what the best paths from your current location are.

Thievery

Thieves are everywhere, especially when there is money involved. A Stone Brick Pack, for example is around 30 gold worth of materials (at the current rate). This makes carriers a pretty big target when it comes to earning money. And while enemy players are enough of a threat, allied players would love to steal your items as well if they can. Luckily, there are some ways to avoid being stolen from:

Run as a Group

This may seem like an obvious solution, but it’s one that is often missed. Running with a guild or a group of friends is an excellent way to keep safe from enemies and allies alike. Just running with any crew, however, is not too good of an option. There are two ways in which people like to pull outsiders:

  • Offer to do group runs (and let others in; whoever wants to join)
  • Offer to pay others to help out

The problem with either of these situations is that you’re potentially opening yourself to trouble. Even if the people you take on aren’t going to rob you, that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to sneak your location information off to their friends for an ambush. The problem has become such a wide-spread one that most people won’t even group with others if they have a pack, for fear they are going to be robbed. The moral of the story is to only take those you trust. Anyone else is a liability and you really don’t want to risk your pack and time.

Choose Paths Wisely

Depending on the server you’re on, the time of the day and the level of the population, different areas are going to have more people than others. When you’re picking a path, you want to negotiate between what is fastest and what is safest. If you have to run through an area you know is going to have other players in, and the area is PvP enabled, for example, that is probably something you want to try and avoid. Even if it takes twice as long to get there using a more safe route, at least you haven’t lost everything due to someone deciding they want your stuff.

In all cases, you want to move as far away from other people as you can. Areas along the cost, through trees, etc. are better than going to where people quest at. Try to avoid enemy NPCs if at all possible, unless you come to a quest hub that has neutral guards (as they will protect you from enemy players, should one decide to attack you). These are the best areas to take a break and re-evaluate your path as well, since they are relatively safe. And then you can move on to the next area when everyone is gone from the camp.

Stealing Packs

If you’re one of the players that wants to steal packs from others, keep a watch out for players on their donkeys with packs on their backs and look for packs on land that is not protected. If you kill a player, their pack drops and you can snag it to go hide with.

The most popular place for pack stealing is in the water. Due to being an open PvP area and having a lot of pirates out and about at any given time, the open seas are a perfect location to find victims. Just take a ship around looking for other players; most people that are traveling in the water will have at least one pack with them. Just be careful for other guilds and large ships that are fully manned!

Conclusion

Pack running can be a fun and challenging experience. As you do it more, you will start to understand better what you should and should not be doing while traveling. You will also learn the various choke points for taking down enemy players and stealing their packs, should you choose to follow that path.
