A Review of Johnny's Po-Boys

Johnny's Po-Boys is a sandwich shop located on Saint Louis street in the French Quarter section of New Orleans, Louisiana. This historic restaurant serves a variety of sandwiches popular in New Orleans, including many variations on the popular “Po-Boy” sandwich.

The Good

Johnny's features a wide range of Po-Boys for your eating pleasure, including crispy fried varieties of virtually any local New Orleans seafood. The food is delicious and the service is quick, and despite being located in an area rife with tourists the prices for each sandwich are quite reasonable. Portions range from large to huge, and there will be no chance of leaving the restaurant without a filled stomach unless one is of a particularly voracious inclination. No matter what you choose to eat, you will leave happy and you'll eagerly await your next chance to come back.

The staff are friendly and are able to answer questions about allergy concerns with ease, which is always a benefit in this modern age. If you have shellfish allergies, however, many of the sandwiches may not be open to you due to shared use of their deep fryer. That being said, there are so many delightful options to choose from that none but the pickiest or most restricted of eaters could ever be left wanting.

The Bad

While Johnny's is a delightful place to visit to grab a bite to eat, it is rather small. Indeed, while there are some tables around back there will never be enough room for everyone that is visiting the restaurant around lunchtime during a popular tourist season. That being said, there is no reason not to simply grab a few Po-Boys and head to Jackson Square or the Riverwalk in order to enjoy another piece of New Orleans culture while devouring these sandwiches.

As is a risk with any restaurant in the French Quarter, Johnny's can be prohibitively crowded around lunchtime resulting in very long lines. To maximize you experience try going a bit later, around 1 or 2 PM when the main rush has died down but the qualiy of service has not. Also, be sure to bring cash as Johnny's does not accept cards and there is little worse than making the journey there only to be unable to get ones hands on a succulent set of sub sandwiches.

The Muffaletta

ASCII Perhaps the greatest sandwich Johnny's has to offer is the classic Muffaletta. A New Orleans classic, the Muffaletta is a sandwich of Italian meats (salami, mortadella, pastrami, etc.) and cheese topped with an olive salad and olive oil, served on a large sesame seeded bun. The Muffaletta is available hot or cold, and is a must try on any vacation that involves a stopover in the French Quarter. Another restaurant in the city is also renowned for their Muffaletta - the Central Grocery - and locals may debate the benefits of these two restaurants, but I firmly feel that Johnny's is superior. Try them both for yourself and find out!

The classic Johnny's muffaletta will typically be served as a half sandwich, and that is more than enough for any one person to eat. If you'd like to save some for later or feed many people at once, only then should you talk on the hulking behemoth that is a full sized muffaletta sandwich.
