DEVTOME.COM HOSTING COSTS HAVE BEGUN TO EXCEED 115$ MONTHLY. THE ADMINISTRATION IS NO LONGER ABLE TO HANDLE THE COST WITHOUT ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE RISING COST. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ALMOST A YEAR, BUT WE HAVE BEEN HANDLING IT FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. HOWEVER, WITH LITERALLY NO DONATIONS FOR THE PAST 2+ YEARS IT HAS DEPLETED THE BUDGET IN SHORT ORDER WITH THE INCREASE IN ACTIVITY ON THE SITE IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR CPU USAGE HAS BECOME TOO HIGH TO REMAIN ON A REASONABLE COSTING PLAN THAT WE COULD MAINTAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THE DEVTOME PROJECT AND KEEP THE SITE UP/ALIVE PLEASE DONATE (EVEN IF ITS A SATOSHI) TO OUR DEVCOIN 1M4PCuMXvpWX6LHPkBEf3LJ2z1boZv4EQa OR OUR BTC WALLET 16eqEcqfw4zHUh2znvMcmRzGVwCn7CJLxR TO ALLOW US TO AFFORD THE HOSTING.

THE DEVCOIN AND DEVTOME PROJECTS ARE BOTH VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS FURTHER SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER 5 OR MORE YEARS!

A response to Arianna Simpson or This is how it was for me as a woman on a Bitcoin meetup

Whilst browsing through reddit for the latest bitcoin news I stumbled upon this post.

To sum it up, Arianna had the bad luck of meeting probably the same kind of guys that think girls can't play video games or aren't smart enough for certain industry sectors such as IT. Which kinda is not a surprise seeing as the probability to find a nerd in the bitcoin world is over 9000, you could see how certain behaviours (good or bad) might be the same. With this quote from one of the guys that talked to her: “Seriously? You mean you actually own bitcoins? You don’t look like someone who would even know about Bitcoin!”, I'm kinda surprised she did not get mad.

But then again I'm kinda in general surprised at what happened to her because my experience was a lot different than hers when I went to my first bitcoin meetup back in August. In case anyone's wondering I was at the BXB (Berlin Bitcoin Exchange). Sure I do get my own “unicorn” reactions when I chat on bitcoin IRC channels or on the forum but I'm kind of used to that seeing as most of my interests unfortunately happen to be dominated by men. (Oh the woes of a female nerd.) But at the exchange I never really had that sort of probelm of being felt up or looked at weirdly because I was definitely not the only woman attending as you can see on these photos. (Tip: I'm the one in the bitcoin orange shirt)

I was rather nervous yet excited because I wanted to see how other bitcoiners looked like because it's one thing chatting on forums and having to picture the image of faceless figures typing back to me hunched over their laptops, and another with real live people. The drinks were expensive let me tell ya that, but that was really my only issue with the whole event. They had cool things for sale and I bought my first bitcoins. (0.5 at the price of 42.50 euros, man those were the times!)

In the end I wound up talking to the guy that sold me the coins and our conversation seemed to attract other listeners as I showed on my laptop my investments into bitcoin ventures. I was kinda obsessed at that point and still am but I'm a bit more toned down after learning my lesson on risky investments. Maybe it belongs to the journey of discovering bitcoin and trading websites but greed does distract you from common sense at first. But the point is, never in the whole conversation did I get a reaction similar to what Arianna endured during the whole thing.

The only thing that really shocked them was my age (I'm 19) yet I understood how bitcoin worked to the T. But then again half of these people knew about Bitcoin because of the industry they worked in over the years. Look at the BXB founder for example, he worked in finance for decades! Maybe that's the beauty of bitcoin, that it brings together all sorts of people. So I guess women establishing themselves more in this industry rather than just going on GirlsgoneBitcoin isn't really that far off as some people may let us believe.

Sure, I could do the silly thing and do a Europe vs America comment but I don't have the necessary knowledge for a discussion like this and in Germany women getting paid less than men for the same job is still an issue. (I mean our Chancellor is a woman for crying out loud, if she can run a country why can't we get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to slacking off? Not that I'd ever think of myself as badass as Merkel, and she pretty much is the definition of badassery in politics in my humble opinion.)

To conclude, not all meetups have guys like that in them and don't let stories like that scare you off. Have a nice day!
