Global warming is an epidemic that human society faces together as one cohesive unit. One country cannot solely head off the impending consequences of today's societal impact on the world around us. It is only with a growing concern from many nations that mankind stands a chance to reverse course and begin global climatic change for the greater good.

Global warming or climate change is, in a sense, a steady climb of temperature across the Earth. It is a known fact that global temperatures have risen more than one degree Fahrenheit over the last century or so. Although this may feel like a minor change, it is quite the contrary. A permanent temperature change of one degree can mean the difference between ice in the Arctic Caps and glacier meltdown.

Let's put this into perspective. There are indigenous species in the colder regions of the globe that depend on those cold climates as their way of surviving. We, as a society, would be at risk of losing entire species of animals, which could include polar bears and other wildlife. Why do we care? All living things on Earth have their place in the global ecosystem and upsetting that balance, even in the slightest manner, could have unintended and possibly harmful ramifications in how society balances our environmental footprint.

Another potentially catastrophic impact global warming has on our society is the consequences on coral reefs. Why is this important; one may ask? People and communities all over the world heavily depend on the existence of coral reefs. Coral reefs provide a habitat for many types of aquatic life. These species provide a food source, jobs and recreation and tourism for mankind. Without coral reefs the global economy would lose billions of revenue along with insurmountable job losses across regions where coral is most common. Coral reefs also protect the land from which they grow. If not for coral reefs, some land masses would be overtaken by the sea which, in turn, has dramatic impacts to all of mankind.

Global warming also plays a key role in precipitation or the lack thereof. Consider that many regions of the world have had record rainfall or record droughts in the last 20 years. You can imagine the impact those changes have on a businesses' ability to conduct themselves profitably. Take for example, farming. Farming of grains, fruits and vegetables, meat sources, such as cattle and pigs, all play a crucial role in our survival. If global warming isn't stable, then it can make weather patterns, unpredictable, which makes farming more impractical than what it is today. That's not to say that it's impossible, it's only to say that everything comes at a cost and nothing cost more than an unpredictable working environment.

Now that a few scenarios have been discussed on what impact global warming has on the global society, we should look at how we got to this point and how we make society as a whole more aware of the potential losses that loom over us. First, is mankind responsible for this epidemic? There are educated opinions that support opposing ideas in regards to this important question. One of those opinions is from some of the many types of environmentalists who play a key role in society. They develop research regarding the impact mankind has on a global scale and develop educated opinions on how to reverse the course of rising climates.

The opposition's point of view is that all climate change is consequential in nature and that mankind has minimal impact on the course that we are on. When there are so many differing opinions, it is hard to determine the correct course of action if any is taken at all. It is safe to say that by cutting down on our carbon footprint the world could only benefit in countless ways.

Only by enacting change on all those around us will we ever be able to truly understand the role global warming has on our global society and how to take corrective action to save our very means of survival. It is imperative that proponents and opponents alike come to some resolution, not on what has caused this global epidemic, but on how we can stop its ill consequences.

Ask yourself what you do to help your environment on a daily basis. Are there things you could do differently? Maybe carpool, maybe use cleaner fuels like natural gas, maybe even try walking a riding a bike to take shorter trips. If we all followed the same path to righteousness and cut down our carbon footprint, our overall global impact could be positively influenced.
