3 Easy Tips To Improve Digestion

Good digestive health seems to be on the decline throughout the nation and in particular in the 50+ group. Just look at the amount of antacids and prescription drugs that are purchased every day to help us process the food that we eat.

Many people say you are what you eat but actually you are what you digest and that includes getting the most nutrients out of your food. Without proper nutrients to promote a healthy immune system and feed your brain you could be open to the risk of memory loss, fatigue, illness and possible depression.

While there are many prescription drugs to alleviate these problems there are also some small healthy tips that you can start doing today to repair your digestive tract.

1. Mindful Eating

Be mindful when you eat. Most of us multi-task while ingesting food. We watch TV, read the paper, talk on the phone, grab a bite and run out the door. This can lead to stress which has a detrimental effect on the body's ability to digest and absorb food. Stop… relax and enjoy your food.

2. Chew...Chew... Chew

Chewing your food at least 30 times can start to break down the fibres of the food and when mixed with saliva you've already started the digestive process. This makes it easier for the rest of your system to do it's work and if you're trying to lose weight… this is a bonus as you feel fuller sooner than you would expect.

This really hit home when I read a story about how 3 prisoners of war made it a habit to chew their food at least 30 times and more while living a starvation diet. Not just their food, but each mouthful including liquids. It turned out that of their whole unit, these 3 were the only ones that survived. Makes you wonder…

3. Avoid Late Night Eating

Try and have your last meal at least 3 hours before you go to bed. You want to allow your body to rejuvenate and heal itself at night instead of it trying to digest a meal.

These are just 3 easy steps that we can all start doing on a daily basis. I find if I follow just these 3 steps and do nothing else different that there is a overall calming in my digestive system and I eat less. I also find that instead of craving processed food that I'm now leaning towards a more simplified diet as I start to receive the nutrients that my body requires.
